Bank Holiday Monday 6th April 2015 (Special S43)

Post by James Robinson »

So, it's an early start for me today, and we have a special offering recorded in 2013, in the days when we had an out-of-place clock hand and a paper dictionary. Seems so long ago, doesn't it :?: :P

But, here we have a battle of sibling rivalry in terms of a catfight between Olivia Lloyd-Potts and Pauline Latham.

Enjoy. ;) :) :D

C2: Series 40 2-Time Winner Pauline Latham. A pharmacy assistant from Colchester, Essex. She's also a keen Scrabbler, knitter and folk festival-goer.
DC: Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth, who was in DC for Olivia's final back in 1985.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: N O V E H R A S T

Olivia: ANOTHER (7)
Pauline: ANTHERS (7)
OT: EARSHOT (7) HARVEST (7) HOAREST (7) HORNETS (7) NOVATES (7) ROANEST (7) SANTERO (7) SENATOR (7) SENHORA (7) SERVANT (7) SHORTEN (7) TAVERNS (7) THRONES (7) TREASON (7) VERSANT (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Remember, this is ODE3 mode, so no VENATORS in this game, just loadsa loadsa 7's here. 8-)

A VERSANT is a region of land sloping in one general direction.

Round 2: J N C O U L A Q N

Olivia: NOUN (4)
Pauline: CLAN (4)
DC: NOUNAL (6)
Score: 11–11 (max 13)

Gyles sticks an -AL onto the end of Olivia's NOUN to bring up the darrenic 6. :)

Round 3: 50, 9, 6, 1, 8, 4. Target: 354.

Olivia: 354. ((8 - 1) x 50) + 4 (10)
Pauline: 354. (50 + 9) x 6 (10)
Score: 21–21 (max 23)

Nice and straightforward for us early risers. 8-)

Teatime teaser: SEAFRIES -> FREESIAS

Round 4: Y G P E A E S R K

Olivia: SPEAKER (7)
Pauline: parkers
DC: PRESAGE (7)
Score: 28–21 (max 30)

Bad luck for Pauline, as she sees a phantom R, giving her sister the first lead of the day.

Round 5: C P E A B N E O T

Olivia: ATONE (5)
Pauline: PENCE (5)
DC: TOECAP (6) POTENCE (7)
OT: ACETONE (7) PATONCE (7)
Score: 33–26 (max 37)

A bit of POTENCE from Gyles, but just 5's from the sisters.

ACETONE (or PROPANONE) is a colourless volatile liquid ketone made by oxidizing isopropanol, used as an organic solvent and synthetic reagent. (Chemical formula: CH3COCH3)

Round 6: 100, 7, 1, 10, 8, 10. Target: 372.

Olivia: -
Pauline: -
RR: 372. ((100 - 7) x 8) / ((10 / 10) + 1) (10)
Score: 33–26 (max 47)

A complete blank from the sisters, but luckily we have Rachel on hand to sort it out for us. 8-)

Gyles recites a joke that he did in Olivia's final back in 1985.

Round 7: H U I A R L O S E

Olivia: HAULIERS (8)
Pauline: airholes
Score: 41–26 (max 55)

A brilliant 8 from Olivia, but Pauline is desperately unlucky to have airholes not given, although it's still not in now. :(

Round 8: P T W I E I M G R

Olivia: MITRE (5)
Pauline: PERMIT (6)
DC: WIMP (4) WIMPIER (7)
OT: PERIWIG (7)
Score: 41–32 (max 62)

But, luckily Pauline is back in immediately with her PERMIT.

A PERIWIG is a highly styled wig worn formerly as a fashionable headdress by both women and men and retained by judges and barristers as part of their professional dress.

Round 9: 100, 8, 1, 5, 4, 9. Target: 635.

Olivia: 637.
Pauline: 636. (100 x (5 + 1)) + (9 x 4) (7)
RR: 635. (((4 - 1) x 9) + 100) x 5 (10)
Score: 41–39 (max 72)

Are the tables turning all of a sudden :? :?: Pauline has now cut the deficit to just 2 points thanks to being one closer on this numbers game, but Rachel comes up trumps again. :D

Teatime teaser: REALNICE -> RELIANCE

Round 10: V R M E O I N D E

Olivia: overmined
Pauline: REMOVED (7)
OT: DOMINEER (8)
Score: 41–46 (max 80)

Hmmm, was that a wise move by Olivia there :?: In fairness to her, she does seem to regret almost immediately, even if Gyles thought it was good. But, Pauline is the beneficiary and takes a 5 point lead, going ahead of her sister for the first time today. :) (NOTE: VERMINED is ODO only)

Round 11: T R E A F O S R I

Olivia: farters
Pauline: FROSTIER (8)
DC: ROTIFERS (8)
OT: ROTARIES (8)
Score: 41–54 (max 88)

After a momentary laugh at farters, which amazingly isn't in, we're left to celebrate Pauline's amazing run, as it's 4 rounds in a row that Pauline has won. Is it game over for the former finalist :?: :?:

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of the phrase "it's the cat's whiskers".

Round 12: B S M O I A G I S

Olivia: IMAGOS (6)
Pauline: IMAGOS (6)
DC: AMIGOS (6)
OT: BIOMASS (7)
Score: 47–60 (max 95)

A very nice 6 from both players, but there was a darrenic 7 missed by all there............

Round 13: T O X A O E T D N

Olivia: NOTATED (7)
Pauline: NOTATED (7)
DC: ODONATE (7)
Score: 54–67 (max 102)

Great 7 spotting by all here. Pauline has a lead of 13, but is it a bit unlucky for her, I wonder........... :? :?

Round 14: 25, 4, 3, 8, 10, 5. Target: 381.

Olivia: 381. (5 x 3 x 25) + 10 - 4 (10)
Pauline: 380.
Score: 64–67 (max 112)

Well, well, well, maybe I've just cursed her, because Olivia has solved the numbers and has moved to within 3 points of her sister, forcing a CRUCIAL CONUNDRUM :!: :!: :!:

Is it going to turn from an unlucky 13 to a lucky 7 for Olivia.......... :?: :?:

Round 15: S I S T E R A I D

Olivia buzzes on 1.75 seconds to say "No, I'm wrong" which is incorrect.
Pauline buzzes on 8.75 seconds to say DISASTERS which is incorrect.
The answer was SATIRISED.
Final Score: 64–67 (max 122)

ARGH!!!! No, it isn't, she buzzes in early, and doesn't declare an answer, leaving the door open for Pauline, who instead gives a plural answer, which is luckily irrelevant, as the game is hers, and both sisters get the Countdown teapot, although Pauline was actually one of the very first people to get a teapot, as they were first given out in Series 40. 8-)

So, Andy will be on later with Gerry Tynan's 2nd game, but til Wednesday, bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
