Friday 27th March 2015 (Series 72, Prelim 56)

Post by Anthony Endsor »

Hello and welcome to another Friday recap. :) Well this week has been dominated by our current champion Tom Cappleman. He has been in destructive form and swept aside all before him this week. Excellent letters, even more excellent numbers, and conundrums got in a split second on several occasions. All of which will give our challenger today Paul Young every confidence I'm sure. Let's see if he can stop Tom from getting a 7th victory today. Enjoy.

Paul: ajoins
DC: PIANOS (6)
OT: POUSSIN (7) SPINOUS (7) SUASION (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

Good start for Tom. He has a real PASSION for this game. Paul had 'ajoins' disallowed as it has to have a d.

Round 2: T G E O D T F E H

Tom: TEETH (5)
Paul: - (0)
DC: HEFTED (6)
OT: GHETTOED (8)
Score: 12–0 (max 15)

Another one for Tom to get his TEETH into. It's O dear for Paul as he sees 2 O's therefore has nothing to offer.

Paul: 729.
RR: 735. (7)
Score: 19–0 (max 22)

Shock! Horror! Tom gets 2 away with the numbers. But then Rachel says that's the best possible so not so bad after all. :D Paul was miles away with 729.

Teatime teaser: TOYBALLS -> TALLBOYS

Round 4: D P M I A T F I R

Tom: IMPAIR (6)
Paul: midpart
DC: IMPART (6)
OT: ADRIFT (6) ARMPIT (6) DIAPIR (6) TRIFID (6)

DC: GUMBOS (6)

Paul: 851. (75 x 10) + 100 + (7 - 6) (10)
Score: 41–10 (max 44)

Points for Paul at last as he gets a perfect 10 with the numbers. Oh did I mention Tom got 10 as well ;)

Another perfect 10 for Tom with the numbers. Paul was nowhere near.

Teatime teaser: DIALTWIN -> TAILWIND

Round 10: H B R O U S T A C

Tom: BORSCHT (7)
Paul: CHORUS (6)
DC: ACTORS (6) CHARTS (6)
OT: AUROCHS (7) AUTHORS (7) BRUTHAS (7) CUATROS (7) ROBUSTA (7) RUBATOS (7) SURCOAT (7) TURACOS (7)

Round 11: R L T L I E O Q T

Tom: littler
Paul: littler
OT: TORTELLI (8)
Score: 72–16 (max 83)

Oh dear!! Both players get 'littler' disallowed. The Countdown rule is 'er' or 'est' words of more than one syllable must be specified. This one wasn't.

Susie talks about expressions that have been corrupted over time.

Round 12: S M N I U C D E A

Tom: 821. (75 + 25) x (10 - 2) + (7 x 3) (10)
Paul: 820.
Score: 95–16 (max 118)

Another perfect 10 for Tom as he storms to 821. Paul can only manage 1 away with 820.

Round 15: N O P A R S L E Y

Tom buzzes on 4 seconds to say LAYPERSON which is correct.
Final Score: 105–16 (max 128)

Well, another magnificent performance by Tom today. Paul was no match as Tom picked up his 7th victory, and now stands on the verge of Octochampdom. It will take quite some player to stop him. Will that player turn up on Monday? Join Andy McGurn on Monday to find out. As my slot has been taken over by horseracing (yet again) next Friday, I will be standing in for James on Wednesday instead. (No this is not an April fool.) I hope you will join me then. In the meantime, thank you very much for reading, and goodbye. :)
