Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S M P D E O U T A

Ruth: SPOUTED (7)
Cliff: STUMPED (7)
DC: POMADES (7) STAMPED (7) STOMPED (7)
OT: DAMPEST (7) UPDATES (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Nice flat round to start us off.

Round 2: B R P E I A G S F

Ruth: bargies
Cliff: firebags
DC: GASPER (6) BRIEFS (6)
OT: PREFABS (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 14)

Both contestants are unfortunate with decent efforts being disallowed. DC spot two sixes, but the darrenic seven is missed.

Round 3: 100, 1, 8, 7, 8, 10. Target: 620.

Ruth: 618. (7-1)x100+10+8 (7)
Cliff: 618. (7-1)x100+10+8 (7)
RR: 620. (8+1)x8x10-100 (10)
OT: 620. 100x7-8x10 (10)
Score: 14–14 (max 24)

Both contestants are two away via the same method, Rachel has it spot on. There is a slightly simpler way though.

Teatime teaser: HANDCLUE -> LAUNCHED

Round 4: T D V E I E N O M

Ruth: MOTIVE (6)
Cliff: MINTED (6)
DC: VENOMED (7)
OT: DEMENTI (7) DOMINEE (7) EMOTIVE (7) EVIDENT (7) TEMENOI (7) VOMITED (7)
Score: 20–20 (max 31)

Both contestants have sixes, DC have one of the seven sevens.

Round 5: A E O R S D M I T

Ruth: MISTED (6)
Cliff: AMORTISED (18)
DC: MEDIATORS (18)
Score: 20–38 (max 49)

This had been a very close contest up to now but Cliff springs a massive lead with a nine. DC have the anagram.

Round 6: 7, 10, 10, 8, 6, 5. Target: 521.

Ruth: 520.
Cliff: 521. 10x10x5+8+7+6 (10)
Score: 20–48 (max 59)

He wears a suit, he gets a nine and then he pulls out a six small solve. I'm starting to like this guy.

Round 7: L W N A E I H D O

Ruth: DENIAL (6)
Cliff: HANDLE (6)
DC: tae kwo do x INHALED (7)
OT: LIONHEAD (8)
Score: 26–54 (max 67)

Six from the contestants, seven from Susie, eight from c4c, and complete madness from Tim Vine.

Round 8: N G E O A S H N R

Ruth: ORANGES (7)
Cliff: ORANGES (7)
DC: HANGERS (7)
OT: GHERAOS (7) NONAGES (7) ONAGERS (7) REHANGS (7) SENHORA (7)
Score: 33–61 (max 74)

Nice flat round again.

Round 9: 100, 2, 1, 7, 5, 6. Target: 600.

Ruth: 600. 100x6 (10)
Cliff: 600. 6x100 (10)
Score: 43–71 (max 84)

Two radically different solutions to a very tricky numbers round here, amazing stuff.

Teatime teaser: CHIDEDUS -> CHUDDIES

Round 10: C X I A E A R S K

Ruth: RAKES (5)
Cliff: SICKER (6)
DC: CARIES (6) caracacks? x
OT: ACKERS (6) ARECAS (6) ASKARI (6) CRAKES (6) CREAKS (6) ERICAS (6) KAISER (6) KARAIS (6)
Score: 43–77 (max 90)

Ruth has been pretty sick at anagramming in her run so far, but Cliff is being SICKER today. DC get one of the other sixes, of which there are many.

Round 11: E I O D S G V E B

Ruth: DEVISE (6)
Cliff: BODGES (6)
DC: VIDEOS (6) OGIVES (6) BODGIES (7)
OT: VIDEOES (7)
Score: 49–83 (max 97)

Not for the first time recently, DC give VIDEOS as a six when there is a second E in the selection, making me doubt that they would allow VIDEOES for 7. But BODGIES was also there, so no matter. The contestants each had a six.

Round 12: M S T R U O A I O

Ruth: TOURS (5)
Cliff: AUTISM (6)
DC: AMOURS (6) SAUTOIR (7)
OT: TIMOROUS (8)
Score: 49–89 (max 105)

Cliff extends his lead to an impressive 40 points with AUTISM for six. DC go one better with a seven, but there is a darrenic eight lurking there.

Round 13: D G N E O U L R T

Ruth: LOUNGED (7)
Cliff: TRUNDLE (7
DC: roulet x ROUNDEL (7) UNDERGO (7)
OT: GRUNTLED (8)
Score: 56–96 (max 113)

Good sevens from the contestants but everyone misses a darrenic eight. Cliff now needs any points from the numbers and the conundrum to break the series high score of 110.

Round 14: 50, 75, 6, 8, 5, 4. Target: 463.

Ruth: 463. 6x75+5+8 (10)
Cliff: 463. 6x75+5+8 (10)
Score: 66–106 (max 123)

Nice straight forward numbers round sees Cliff score a debut century. But can he get the conundrum to break the series high score?

Round 15: A N T I G L I D E

Cliff buzzes on 3 seconds to say DETAILING which is correct.
Final Score: 66–116 (max 133)

He can! Amazing debut from Cliff, he's scored higher on his debut than anyone has scored in any game this series, and higher than I ever managed in my prelims either :( He could be a very strong contender, but can he maintain this form? He may have to, because some apterites and forumites are expected on the show soon, and once they start, the schedule looks to be packed full of c4c and aptofolk!

Join James tomorrow to see if Cliff can repeat his magnificent performance from today.

Raw scores: Ruth 82 - Cliff 116
Maxes: Ruth 4 - Cliff 7

Well, as errors go, that's a pretty big one! thanks for pointing it out James, I shall correct it. Apologies to Cliff if he sees this.
