Friday 17th January 2014 (8/10 Cats Series 2, Episode 3)

Post by James Robinson »

So, it's time for episode 3 of series 2, and what looks like to be the brightest line-up yet on this show.

No doubt I've said it too soon. :P Enjoy. ;) :) :D

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown recap for Friday 17 January 2014.

Team 1:
* Kathy Burke, famous for playing Perry in the sketches on Harry Enfield & Chums, an immature and pre-pubescent teenager, a role now taken up by Josh Widdicombe. (Her mascot is a bottle of vodka).
&
* Sean Lock, he hopes to be magically cleverer after loadsa losses on past editions of the show. (He claims he has an envelope of a word he thinks will be on show later.....).

Team 2:
* Jon Richardson, who describes himself as a "perfectionist who finds failure difficult to handle" (His "mascot" is a bottle of "Conund" Rum, which he'll have a shot of every time he gets a 9 letter word tonight).
&
* Josh Widdicombe, a regular The Last Leg, and his disability is the fact that he's from Devon. (Mascot - certificate of being the "Good Egg" at school).

DC: Susie Dent, her 1st appearance was back in 1992, and has done over 3,000 episodes done, and Dara Ó Briain, "a comic mastermind, Ireland's greatest lover, can do 200 press-ups in a minute" and who writes his own intros, and now wants to become a dork. :p

RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Tonight's winners will receive some Countdown towels for winning tonight's show. 8-)

Enjoy the show.

Round 1 (Picked by Jon & Josh): R S O P E I D T U
Jimmy's Distraction: Jimmy eating dog biscuits and transforming himself into a dog in a suit.

Team 1 - Kathy: TRIPODS (7, actually declared as a 6, but the adjudicators let her have it, as it was her first time on the show :) ) / Sean: PRIEST (6)
Team 2 - Jon: pouristed / Josh: STRIPED (7)
DC: DUSTIER (7) OUTSIDER (8) DIPTEROUS (18)
Score: 7–7 (max 18)

Jon seems to be even more cleverer than any of us had previously thought, as he has a 9 immediately :!:  :o But, unfortunately, he just seems to be desperate for a shot of the "Conund-Rum", but maybe he should've given some to DC for them spotting the lovely 9. :)

Oh well, hopefully this will just be a one-off. :D

Round 2 (Picked by Kathy & Sean): 50, 25, 10, 4, 7, 10. Target: 868.

Team 1 - Kathy: 105. Mistake in working. / Sean: 825.
Team 2 - Jon: 869. ((10 + 7) x 50) + 25 - 10 + 4 (7) / Josh: 2,000.
RR: 868. (((50 + 10) / 10) + 25) x 4 x 7 (10)
Score: 7–14 (max 28)

Well, normal service definitely seems to have resumed now thanks to Jon's 1 away method.

Teatime teaser: BUTTSCAR -> SUBTRACT

The next round saw Kathy and Jon take on each other in the letters round.

Round 3 (Picked by Kathy): I E H G A R P T E
Jimmy's Distraction: Hula hooping with Rachel.

Kathy: GRAPE (5)
Jon: graphitee
DC: GRIPE (5) HERITAGE (8) GRAPHITE (8)
Score: 12–14 (max 36)

Hmmm, Jon is definitely wanting that shot now.................... But maybe he should have lead with the "lead" instead. :P

The next numbers game is a matchup between Sean and Josh.

Round 4 (Picked by Josh): 100, 6, 1, 6, 4, 8. Target: 111.

Sean: 111. 100 + 6 + 4 + 1 (10)
Josh: 111. 100 + 6 - 6 + 8 + 4 - 1 (10)
Score: 22–24 (max 46)

Well, that was well easy, wasn't it :?: :P

Dara talks about some Irish words that aren't in the English dictionary, but he'd like to be, including "gee", the Irish for "fanny". :P  8-)

Teatime teaser: LUBEDONG -> BLUDGEON

As we begin part 3, Joe Wilkinson comes in wearing a Countdown cap, and is leading some old ladies as their tour guide. One of them, Dotty, stays behind for the remainder of the show.

Joe and Dotty then start knitting some new jousting stick holders. :P

Round 5 (Picked by Jon & Josh): U R E L S A B M E
Jimmy's Distraction: Grim Reaper walk behind the contestants, apparently looking for Nick Hewer............ :?

Team 1 - Kathy: SLUMBER (7) / Sean: BLAMES (6)
Team 2 - Jon: beamrules / Josh: RULES (5)
DC: MARBLES (7) REUSABLE (8)
OT: RESUMABLE (18)
Score: 29–24 (max 64)

He's not giving up on that 9 shot, is he :?: Well, like in round 1, a genuine 9 was available, but not even seen by DC................... :(

Incidentally, the mystery envelope is opened to reveal a disparaging Christmas card to Sean's next door neighbours. :p

Round 6 (Picked by Kathy & Sean): 25, 75, 6, 7, 10, 7. Target: 923.

Team 1 - Kathy: - / Sean: -
Team 2 - Jon: 926. ((25 + 75 - 6) x 10) - 7 - 7 (7) / Josh: 930
Dara: 923. ((25 - 7 + 75) x 10) - 7 (10)
Score: 29–31 (max 74)

At least Jon's numbers games are still up to scratch, although he clearly had worked it out just as he was showing his working out for 926. Dara then shows that all those maths shows on Dave have worked. 8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Teatime teaser: EATSHITE -> HESITATE

Round 7 (Picked by Kathy & Sean): O I O S R N D E D

Team 1 - Kathy: noodier / Sean: INDOORS (7)
Team 2 - Jon: dinedoors / Josh: OI (2)
DC: RODEOS (6)
OT: INDORSED (8) ODORISED (8)
Score: 36–31 (max 82)

INDOORS or dinedoors :?: I know which one I'd prefer. :D

Round 8 (Picked by Jon & Josh): E X G O N A D S I (Joe was trying to get GONADS spelt out, and then when he got an E out, he undid his shirt  :o  :o (less said about that, the better methinks. :P )

Team 1 - Kathy: GONADS (6) / Sean: GONADS (6)
Team 2 - Jon: sadoexing / Josh: GONADS (6)
DC: AGONISED (8)
OT: DIAGNOSE (8)
Score: 42–37 (max 90)

So, it's five 9's for Jon, and no points for his efforts. Luckily, everyone else was transfixed at the sight of GONADS on the board. :P

So, it's crucial conundrum time for the first time in a long while on the show. 8-)

Round 9: I R I S H T A R T (Dara was clearly mouthing out "F**k you" to Jimmy throughout the 30 seconds with IRISHTART on screen.   )

No one buzzes. The answer was ARTHRITIS.
Final Score: 42–37 (max 100)

Well, the max was 100 points, and while neither team was close to that score, the fun element was there for all to see, as Sean managed only his 3rd win in this run of shows, mainly down to Jon's "suicidal" letters game tactics. No doubt normal service will be resumed this Friday for the last show of the current run, but next time Dara will be out of DC and on Sean's team, while Jon is joined by Sharon Horgan, with Adam Buxton in DC with Susie.

I'll be back on Wednesday for my next Series 70 recap.

So, till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D  8-)
