Countdown recap for Tuesday 21st September 2010.

C1: Champion Eoin Monaghan (4 wins.) Everyone’s favourite County Downer, he’s a big Man Utd fan and would love to meet Sir Alex Ferguson
C2: Challenger Clive Myers, a retired company director from South Woodford in London. He has 6 kids aged 44, 42, 39, 16, 3 and 4 (5 large and 1 small!) He enjoys playing and scoring cricket and once at a match met former PM Harold MacMillan at the urinals!
DC: Susie Dent and Dave Spikey.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: O E A F S H R E S

C1: seahorse
C2: SHARES (6)
DC: SEASHORE (8)
Score: 0–6 (max 8)

Unfortunately for Eoin sea horse is 2 words (at the moment) but as Susie mentions, he could have offered its 1-word anagram SEASHORE. Clive manages the rare feat of scoring first blood off Eoin. This could be one heck of a close match.

Round 2: A O P R E C T I W

C1: OPERATIC (8)
C2: CATER (5)
OT: APORETIC (8)
Score: 8–6 (max 16)

And Eoin counterstrikes with a lovely 8. APORETIC is a bit of a puzzlement.

Round 3: O E U S T P G T Z

C1: OUTSET (6)
C2: GUEST (5)
DC: OUTSTEP (7)
OT: TOUPETS (7)
Score: 14–6 (max 23)

Round 4: O A T B M O I E T

C1: TAMBOTIE (8)
C2: BOAT (4)
Score: 22–6 (max 31)

Epic word from Eoin! Tambotie is a South African tree with caustic sap. Poor Clive can only muster a 4 in an otherwise difficult selection.

Round 5: 100, 9, 3, 1, 8, 7. Target: 101. *Cue the usual easy target spiel*

C1: 101. 100+1 (10)
C2: 101. 100+1 (10)
Score: 32–16 (max 41)

Dave tells us about all those blame for a claim adverts and how we should spice things up with some more exotic accidents such as lion maulings.

Teatime teaser: MUTEDBAR -> DRUMBEAT

Round 6: E I L Q C A E R G

C1: GLACIER (7)
C2: grease
DC: GRACILE (7)
OT: ELEGIAC (7)
Score: 39–16 (max 48)

Poor Clive! He declares he’s used too many E’s when in fact he needed a S rather than a C.

Round 7: A U E N T J R I M

C1: RUMINATE (8)
C2: untrim
DC: RAIMENT (7)
OT: JAUNTIER (8)
Score: 47–16 (max 56)

Another easy 8 for anyone who’s skilled at killing Countdown… erm I mean playing Apterous.

Round 8: E P L D O A E W R

C1: DEPLORE (7)
C2: plowed
DC: POLEWARD (8)
Score: 54–16 (max 64)

Oh dear Clive has his third uh-oh in a row! Susie breaks it to him gently though.

Round 9: I O U S C L N I E

C1: CUISINE (7)
C2: LESION (6)
DC: SILICONE (8)
OT: ISOCLINE (8)
Score: 61–16 (max 72)

Round 10: 50, 7, 8, 3, 6, 1. Target: 930.

C1: 933. (50+1)x3x6+8+7 (7)
C2: -
RR: 930. ((3-1)x6+50)x(8+7) (10)
Score: 68–16 (max 82)

Rachel. Please stop outclassing the contestants like this. At least declare 1 away. This sort of behaviour is killing Countdown.

Teatime teaser: LAMBZONE -> EMBLAZON

Round 11: I O E S M D N U L

C1: EMULSION (8)
C2: UNDOES (6)
OT: DELUSION (8) UNSOILED (8) MUSLINED (8)
Score: 76–16 (max 90)

Too many 8s! Countdown suffers a cardiac arrest.

Round 12: O I X F L A E R T

C1: FLOATIER (8)
C2: FLOATER (7)
DC: TREFOIL (7) FOLIATE (7)
Score: 84–16 (max 98)

Some more tree-y words from DC. Maybe they should just put it in the contestant guidelines to study trees before coming on the show, but don’t get too good…

Round 13: U O A G B S K E G

C1: GOUGES (6)
C2: SOAK (4)
DC: BOSKAGE (7)
Score: 90–16 (max 105)

BOSKAGE is erm… to do with trees.

Round 14: 100, 8, 5, 6, 9, 7. Target: 918.

C1: 918. (100+7-5)x9 (10)
C2: 919. Mistake in working.
Score: 100–16 (max 115)

Poor Clive can’t even manage 918 when there is a 9 and a 100 in the selection. No wonder this has been a walkover.

Round 15: M I R R O R S E T

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say which is incorrect.
C2 does not buzz.
A very beautiful lady in the audience with a shaven head and lots of nice skin piercings tells us the answer is TERRORISM.
Final Score: 100–16 (max 125)

Another terrific win for Eoin. I’d like to congratulate him on all his mind-blowing performances so far. As numerous people have already said on the forum, on the street and on Kirk’s world tour it’s fantastic to see fresh, young faces on Countdown. Especially ones that are clearly loving the experience, interact well as well as showing remarkable ability at the game. Incidentally this will be my last recap. Lectures restart next week and I’ve just not got the time for it anymore plus there’s various other student/wedding stuff I’d rather be doing. I hereby hand every third Tuesday recap over to BEN HUNTER cause he said he might fancy a turn.

I think he said he used too many E's, because he was possibly risking GREECE, the country, as opposed to GREASE, the lubricant. Easy to mix up.

So sad you're giving up recaps too, Dinos. :(

By the way, Ben. Do you want to sort out Dinos' wikicaps as well as the normal recap, since I used to sort them out for him :?:

Racist conundrum. No wonder Eoin boycotted it.

Best of luck with the other stuff, mate, although I can't believe there are things you'd rather do than recapping!

Cheers Mike. I love recapping, but I've really got to buckle down for my last year at uni and don't need any further distractions. Also MINE WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS ROBBO'S/RYAN'S! I might do the occasional relief recap tho so pm me anybody if you can't do a recap.

This is true. Robbo is my carer

Yeah I've done a wiki before so that's no problem.
