Formula One

Post by Robert Baxter »

Just because there's something for every other sport here, I thought about setting this up.

I created the F1 drivers' series on the wiki, but that didn't go down well.

Schumacher CAN still win the championship :x

And SPOILERS:Mark Webber's on pole.

I voted for Rubens :D

Hamilton probably should have been pole but he didn't get the best out of his first lap in Q3. Then he went faster when it was raining at La Source. That and the fact that the gap between the Red Bulls and the McLarens is normally less in the rain could mean that Hamilton will be the fastest in the race - but can he get past Webber?

Weather update: Light Rain.

If it rains, McLaren's F-Duct might not work in the rain. I wonder if he'll have a go at Webber outside Eau Rouge

Lap 1: What a dreadful start from Webber. It's almost as if he was standing still. Hamilton takes advantage - he leads into the first corner. Kubica second then Button. Wow. And there's a yellow flag. Can't see why. Drama. Spots of rain are falling now. And it's slippy. Loads of cars go wide at the Bus Stop chicane - at least nine. And there's contact - Barrichello and Alonso. Alonso manages to get into the pits, Barrichello's car doesn't look good.

Lap 2: Button is all over Kubica and manages to get second. Safety car is out.

Lap 3: There's blue sky. That was a really quick shower. Very tricky to work out tyre strategy with these conditions. Glock came in for wets but then had to change them again. Two stops already for him.

Lap 4: Hamilton goes wide at La Source when the safety car comes in but he hangs on to first. Kubica is struggling and Vettel nabs him for third at the same corner. Ted Kravitz says Alonso will come in again - to change to dry tyres. Showers are unlikely now for the next 30 minutes.

Lap 5: Alonso does indeed come in. That's his second stop and he is in 20th place. Hamilton is flying at the moment. He sets a 1:53.065 and he leads Button by 2.7 seconds. Vettel is 1.1 seconds further back.

Lap 7: Hamilton leads by 4.8 seconds and is told: "You're pace is good." The teams are not expecting rain in the near future. Alonso has moved up to 17th place. Vettel is 0.6 seconds off Button. I forgot to mention that Barrichello's crash did rule him out of the race. Not the way to celebrate his 300th GP.

Lap 10: Button is told that rain is expected in 20 minutes and that he will stay out until then. Vettel and Kubica were under investigation for the incident when the Red Bull man claimed third but no action will be taken. Hamilton leads by 5.6 seconds.

Lap 11: Vitaly Petrov takes the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg on the outside of Les Combes. Schumacher is behind the Renault driver and joins in the move at Turn Seven. There's a little bit of contact between the Mercedes drivers. Rosberg has a bit of front wing damage but they are going to keep him out. Petrov in ninth, Schumacher 10th, Rosberg 11th.

Lap 13: Button has Vettel all over him but the McLaren driver is holding up the rest of the pack. Button has bit of front wing damage and has balance problems as a result but is staying out. Hamilton, therefore, can streak away and his lead is now 8.3 seconds.

Lap 16:VETTEL AND BUTTON COLLIDE. Unbelievable. As the rain starts to fall again, Vettel gets a run on Button coming out of Blanchimont but as he gets on the outside he veers into the Briton coming into the Bus Stop. Vettel is able to crawl into the pits to change his front wing but Button is out. The incident is under investigation. Massive moment.

Lap 19: Vettel gets a drive-through penalty for that. Hungary and now Belgium. Incredible. Hamilton and Webber will not be complaining though. Hamilton leads by 10.5 seconds, then it is Kubica, Webber, Massa, Sutil and Schumacher. Alonso is in ninth.

Lap 20: In comes Vettel. How costly will these drive-throughs be for the German?

Lap 22: In comes Webber for his stop. Very quick. He will come out in fourth. Vettel sets the fastest lap of 1:50.868. BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz says that when Vettel served that drive-through, the McLaren mechanics all came out to the pit lane with their arms folded to give him a lingering stare. Moody.

Lap 23: Kubica in for his stop, so is Massa.

Lap 24: Now it's the turn of leader Hamilton. Text book, the stop was 4.2 seconds.

Lap 25:... and Hamilton gets out in front. What power from Sutil as he takes Schumacher coming up the hill into Les Combes for fifth. Feel the Force. Or something.

Lap 26: More drama - Vettel has a puncture. Vettel overtakes Vitantonio Liuzzi at the Bus Stop but the Force India driver's front wing slices open the left rear tyre of the Red Bull. Vettel cannot get into the pits so has to crawl all the way around the track with a flat tyre. Liuzzi does manage to get in and has a new front wing.

Lap 27: Vettel comes in for new tyres, they are the softer compounds, while Massa is told that rain will arrive in 10 laps. Hamilton is on easy street at the moment, he's 8.6 seconds clear of Kubica.

Lap 30: This is Hamilton's to lose, he is 11.2 seconds clear now after setting a fastest lap of 1:49.422. Hang on though, this is not over yet - there are some very threatening clouds in the distance. Stay tuned.

Lap 32: Hamilton is told that he will remain on the slicks until "it is definitely ready for inters". Hamilton leads by 12.9 seconds, then it is Webber in third 2.2 seconds off Kubica. Massa is fourth, Sutil fifth, Alonso ninth, Vettel 19th.

Lap 34: The rain is falling. Glock comes in for full wets. Tellingly, Hamilton and Webber decide to stay out. Is that the right decision?

Lap 35: Hamilton is tip-toeing around the circuit, he tells his team that the rain falling heavier now. He gets a reply that they "do not want to jump too early". AND HE GOES OFF. He's in the gravel at Rivage. More drama. He keeps his head though and gets back on the track.

Lap 36: Loads of cars pile into the pits now. It's all going off. Alonso and Vettel touch wheels in the pits. The Mercedes duo are on inters and Vettel is on full wets. How long will this rain last? Nick Hulkenberg is still out on slicks still. Interesting. Kubica overshoots his pit-lane box, that's a very costly delay as Webber gets out in front of him for second. Hamilton still leads.

Lap 38: Vettel has to come in again for another set of full wets. BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz says the German burnt out his previous set as it was not yet wet enough on the track. ALONSO SPINS. He touches the paint coming out of Les Combes coming into Malmedy, he smacks into the barrier and sits in the middle of the track. The Spaniard clambers out and runs to safety. HE'S OUT. Safety car.

Lap 39: Vettel says it is not wet enough but his team reply that their spotters believe it is and that those drivers on inters are struggling. There's a bit of spray coming off the cars now and Hamilton complains that the safety car is going too slow. I can't keep up. This is absolutely superb.

Lap 40: The safety car is in at the end of this lap. Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne tells the BBC that intermediates are the tyres to be on now as it is drying up.

Lap 41: Hamilton gets off cleanly and keeps the lead over Webber. Rosberg overtakes team-mate Schumacher for sixth - that will put a smile on the younger man's face. Whoa, Jarno Trulli spins his Lotus coming down into Pouhon. He's lucky no-one smacked into him.

Lap 42: Hamilton leads Webber by 1.6 seconds with the Australian leading Kubica by the same distance. Will there be any more drama? Vettel is in 15th by the way, no points for him.

End of the race.: Hamilton's done it, that's his third victory of the season and his first since Canada. A significant victory for Hamilton, especially with three of his rivals not scoring any points. The cars are quickly diverted the wrong way into the pits to avoid a lengthy in-lap and Hamilton leaps out of the car. Kubica was third, Massa fourth, Sutil fifth, Rosberg sixth and Schumacher seventh. Vettel ended up in 15th.

Monza should suit McLaren over the Red Bulls but most tracks should suit the Red Bull over anything. Webber should be favourite but I think Hamilton's the better driver and it could also come down to reliability or some other luck factor. I don't think Alonso or Button will win now. Vettel still might if the Red Bulls get a clear run and he beats Webber regularly.

Lap 1: What a start from Jenson Button. He gets ahead of Alonso even though the Spaniard tries to cut across him. Oh no... LEWIS HAMILTON IS OUT. That was Hamilton's error. Hamilton gets up to fourth but is too aggressive at the Della Roggia chicane and collides with Massa. His front right wheel is loose and his race is over. Incredible.

Lap 2: Button leads Alonso by 0.7 seconds. We are getting a replay of the start and Alonso shoves into the back of Button a little at the opening chicane. Something seems to have come of the undertray. "That will affect him a little in the downforce stakes," says Brundle.

Lap 5: Alonso is all over Button at the first chicane but the Briton holds firm. "It's going to be a long afternoon for Button if he is going to stay in front. His different car set-up will leave him exposed."

Lap 6: It was another poor start for Webber and he is fighting back from ninth place. He takes Michael Schumacher on the inside of the first corner and it's a wonderful battle between the pair for the rest of the lap. Next up for Webber? Team-mate Seb Vettel.

Lap 8: Button's gap is 0.6 seconds. Massa sets the fastest lap of 1:26.922. Hamilton arrives back at the McLaren garage. He's not speaking to anyone.

Lap 10: Button is maintaining that gap but it's not increasing. Brundle notes that Button's downforce at the Lesmo corners gives him a gap which prevents Alonso getting close enough for a pass. "Jenson needs to max out those corners," adds Brundle.

Lap 11: Just as I say that, Button posts a 1:26.861 - the fastest lap of the race so far. The gap increases to one second. BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz says Force India's Adrian Sutil has switched to the harder compound tyres for the rest of the race. He's 20th. Kobayashi retired with a gearbox problem.

Lap 13: McLaren ask Button for a radio check, Ted Kravitz says it is because the team have not heard anything from him. He must be very comfortable. They also say that they are 'in the window' and the telly boys take that as meaning that the Ferrari tyres are starting to wear so Button can do the most damage in this section of the race.

Lap 16: Button's gap at the front is 1.1 while Alonso sets the fastest lap of 1:26.101. Rosberg is fourth, Bob Kubica fifth and Nico Hulkenberg is sixth.

Lap 19: Alonso is pushing, another fastest lap of 1:26.048. The front two are dropping Massa, who is 2.7 seconds off Massa.

Lap 20: "Four crucial laps now," Mercedes tell Rosberg. Ted Kravitz says the message means that he will be coming into the pits in four laps time.

Lap 21: "Problem with the engine, problem with the engine. It feels it is dying on me," shouts a distressed sounding Vettel. Team-mate Webber then overtakes him for seventh. Button's gap over Alonso is 0.9 seconds.

Lap 24: Alonso is closing up again - 0.6 seconds behind Button who is battling to keep position. By the way, Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari picked up a drive-through penalty a bit earlier for gaining an advantage by cutting the corner at Turn Two. He's 17th.

Lap 26: Interesting chat on the telly. Eddie Jordan is alluding as to whether some people could allege that the swapping of places between Vettel and Webber was a variation of team orders. Brundle is having none of it though: "I don't think Vettel is ready to yield anything." Karun Chandhok agrees: "Vettel sounded too panicked."

Lap 29: Button is flying. Two fastest laps in a row. The second one being a 1:25.691. There's an ambulance in the pit lane and it's outside the Hispania garage. Don't know why as yet.

Lap 30: Alonso sets a 1:25.674 and is 0.9 seconds off Button. Webber, in seventh, is 0.7 seconds behind Hulkenberg.

Lap 35: BBC pit-lane reporter Holly Samos says Sakon Yamamoto's radio guy was changing the settings when Sakon drove off. He is conscious and moving. Button is told: "Push now, push now, everything you've got. We're approaching the pit stops." Webber comes in for his stop but his does not get out in front of Kubica though.

Lap 36: Button is in - the pit stop is 4.2 seconds.

Lap 37: Hulkenberg comes in and he gets out in front of Kubica and Webber. But Webber's having a look, no cigar at the first corner, but the Australian overtakes Kubica at the Della Roggia chicane. He's seventh. Alonso comes in, can he get out in front of Button?

Lap 38: He does! Alonso's pit stop was 3.4 seconds and the Spaniard maintains the lead coming into the first corner. A Ferrari leads the Italian Grand Prix. Massa is now in.

Lap 39: Alonso is stretching his legs. He posts a 1:24.942 and is leading by 0.7 seconds. Hulkenberg has been all over the show trying to keep Webber off his back. There's been a couple of corners cut, what will the stewards say?

Lap 42: The gap at the front is 1.8 seconds after a fastest lap from Alonso of 1:24.676. Button is struggling to keep on Alonso's tail. Hulkenberg is quicker than Button at the mo. The stewards are not going to investigate the Hulk as Webber, apparently, was not close enough to the Williams driver when the incidents happened. Ferrari tell Ted Kravitz that this was the plan from the start when Button took the lead at the first corner, for Alonso to keep close and to take him at the stops.

Lap 45: Webber is told that Hulkenberg will not give up his place and the Aussie responds with a 1:24.531. Massa, in third, is just 1.7 seconds off Button while Alonso is 3.7 seconds clear in front. Vettel still in fourth.

Lap 49: Webber is all over The Hulk but the Williams driver is nothing but stubborn. The Australian is waving furiously at him. Tasty. Jarno Trulli's Lotus is smoking. That's his race over.

Lap 50: And he does it. Webber has the straight-line speed advantage over Hulkenberg and he passes him coming down to the Della Roggia. Vettel still has not pitted yet. He needs to do so before the end of the race. McLaren tell Ted Kravitz that Button's early contact with Alonso did take away some of his downforce.

Lap 52: Vettel comes in. He brakes hard at the entrance to the pit lane as he tries to make the speed limit. Will he come out ahead of his team-mate?

Lap 53: The answer to that is yes. Easily. That's fourth for him.

Robert Baxter wrote:Lap 1: What a start from Jenson Button.

Probably just as quick to watch this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsp ... 992164.stm

I was annoyed that Hamilton took himself out of the running but it did amuse me that he was in denial as he powered down the next straight knowing full well that he had no chance of getting round the next corner.

Arguably what won Alonso the race was not better pit work but removing part of Button's car at the first chicane.

Time for Baxter's F1 recap!

Lap one: Good start for Alonso. He won from pole last time out in Monza - can he do it again? Vettel can't quite get past so settles into second. Hamilton, Button and Webber all have decent starts too. So we're as we were, although here's a yellow flag...

Lap two: Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who started from the back of the grid after an engine mapping problem in qualifying, comes into the for hard tyres. That's the only stop the Brazilian needs to make so he'll now look to make his way up the field.

Lap three: Liuzzi's car is parked by the wall on the exit of Turn 10, so here comes the safety car. This could be a long, long night.

Lap four: Webber is the only top-10 driver to come into the pits, switching from soft to hard tyres. Most of the others outside the top 10 do likewise. Massive gamble from Red Bull.

Lap five: Safety car comes in and we're back up and running. Alonso surges ahead, Webber sneaks past a couple of cars to re-enter the top 10. No more safety cars, please!

Lap seven: Superb overtaking move sees Webber pass Kobayashi into Turn five and then defend doggedly into Turn seven. The Australian championship leader is up to ninth. Up front, Alonso extends his advantage over Vettel to 1.393 seconds.

Lap 11: Reports coming through of the hard tyres sliding around. Very humid at the Marina Bay street circuit tonight. Alonso extending his lead at the head of the field. Vettel told on his team radio to "let the brakes cool, let the brakes cool". Bad news. Meanwhile, Webber takes Schumacher at Turn seven and he's up to eighth.

Lap 14: This track is extremely demanding on the brakes. Last year, several driver including Webber suffered brake failure. It's all down to the stop-start nature of the circuit which means more pressure on the brakes. And this season's heavier fuel loads are hardly going to help. Alonso moves 2.6 seconds ahead of Vettel, 6.2 ahead of Hamilton, and 10.7 ahead of Button. The Spaniard is absolutely hammering this.

Lap 15: "Tyres good but I'm not pushing at all," says Vettel on the Red Bull team radio as he cuts Alonso's advantage by a tenth. Hamilton picking up pace too. Alonso made a slight error in first sector of lap 14. Alonso responds with a new fastest lap - 1:51.709. As if to say 'Don't mess with me'. Elsewhere, we have a brief yellow flag but normal service resumes pretty quickly.

Lap 16: And Alonso lowers the bar once more, this time to 1:51.520, and he's more than three seconds ahead of Vettel. Championship leader Webber struggling with the hard 'prime tyres - he's a staggering 30 seconds adrift of race leader Alonso.

Lap 18: We lost Liuzzi on lap one but apart from that it's all pretty uniform. Alonso continues to edge away from Vettel and the Red Bull, in turn, is streaking clear of Hamilton and Button. With no rain in the air, it's looking like a two-horse race...

Lap 21: Webber puts in a personal best but he's still 37 seconds off the lead back in eighth. He's clearly looking at the bigger picture, hoping his early change to hard tyres will stand him in good stead when the front runners head in to switch from softs to hards. Will Red Bull's gamble pay off?

Lap 23: Desperate to close the gap on Red Bull and Ferrari at high downforce, slow speed circuits, McLaren brought significant upgrades with them to Singapore but they're comfortably off the pace today. Hamilton is 19 seconds off the lead and Button 25.

Lap 23: "Ooh, Mark, keep it out of the barriers," says Martin Brundle on BBC One as Webber makes a mistake on the entry to Turn 18 and flirts with the Armco on the outside of the track.

Lap 26: Alonso and Vettel are lapping three seconds quicker than anyone else. New FIA 'flexi-bodywork' regulations to hamper Ferrari and Red Bull? I think not. Vettel has made up seven 10ths on Alonso in the last two laps but the Spaniard still looks comfortable.

Lap 28: A bit of traffic hampers Alonso but he remains three seconds ahead of Vettel. Hamilton almost 29 seconds back and Button nearly 36. And the McLaren pit crew are getting ready... Hamilton comes in.

Lap 29: Hamilton comes out behind Webber so the championship leader could be on for a podium finish. Now in come Alonso and Vettel. Then it's Button. Solid pits stops all round, although Vettel did nearly stall coming out. All the front runners on hard tyres now.

Lap 31: Alonso leads Vettel but the German is right on his rival's tail. Back markers complicating things too. This is getting extremely tense.

Lap 32: Oh dear. Kobayashi loses his rear and crashes at the exit of Turn 18. And then Bruno Senna compounds a woeful weekend by careering into the back of Kobayashi. Safety car comes out.

Lap 34: Lewis Hamilton loses access to his drinks bottle. Not ideal in 67% humidity and 31 degree heat, not to mention the even higher temperatures inside the cockpit. "Keep pressing the button, we'll see what we can do," Hamilton is told on the team radio. Safety car still out there by the way.

Lap 36: Bad news for McLaren. Lewis Hamilton is out of the Singapore Grand Prix. Hamilton managed to overtake Mark Webber on the long straight - Raffles Boulevard - to Turn seven. But back comes Webber and his front right hits Hamilton's left rear. Hamilton is forced off the track and the title-chasing Briton is a non-finisher for the second race running. Disastrous for Hamilton's title bid.

Lap 40: Up front, Alonso and Vettel are trading fastest laps and obliterating the field. They're seven seconds clear of Mark Webber in third with Jenson Button a further two second back.

Lap 44: Sebastian Vettel, pressuring Alonso for the lead, asks his race engineer to let him know "when" the brakes are looking marginal again. Meanwhile, the stewards are investigating the incident between Webber and Hamilton on lap 36 that ending the latter's race.

Lap 47: Alonso's lead over Vettel stands at 1.2 seconds. Neither man can afford an error, huge levels of concentration required. Webber 13.7 seconds off the lead, Button 2.4 seconds further back. Pictures of a dejected Hamilton coming into us. He's pacing his way back to the pits with a face like thunder. Replay after replay of the incident on TV. Webber looked pretty innocent. And we have some OFFICIAL NEWS: There will no further action from stewards regarding the incident between Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber.

Lap 50: A fastest lap for Vettel - 1:48.747. Alonso's advantage coming down to one second.

Lap 52: Top 10: Alonso, Vettel, Webber, Button, Rosberg, Barrichello, Sutil, Hulkenberg, Massa, Petrov. Out of the race: Hamilton, Heidfeld, Klien, Kobayashi, Senna, Trulli, Liuzzi. And Glock's just gone with a hydraulics problem.

Lap 55: Low fuel = light cars = quick laps. Alonso leads Vettel by one second, Webber almost 23 seconds adrift and Button 1.8 behind the Australian.

Lap 56: Superb overtaking move sees Kubica leapfrog Sutil to snatch seventh position. The drivers say this race is one of - if not the - most physically demanding on the calendar. Stifling heat and humidity don't mix well with 61 laps in four layers of clothing and thick boots. Yet they're all still going hammer and tongs. Fair play.

Lap 58: Not long to go now and Alonso is bang on course for victory. Fine drive from Vettel, too, but he's slipped a couple of 10ths back and it looks like he'll have to settle for second.

Lap 60: "A masterful drive from Alonso," says commentator Jonathan Legard on BBC One. Meanwhile, Kovalainen's Lotus is on fire. Literally. He's out of the cockpit and extinguishing it himself, the Finn. Safety car? No sign of it just yet. Ooh and Vettel is pushing Alonso hard at the death.

FERNANDO ALONSO WINS THE SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX: Vettel cuts Alonso's advantage to two 10ths but the Spaniard completes his faultless drive to take the chequered flag for a second successive race win. Magical from the Ferrari man. Fist pumps galore. Vettel second, Webber third, Button fourth, Hamilton out

What a waste of time that was. They go on about how the F1 cars run too low which causes them to aquaplane - well make the wet tyres much bigger than the dry tyres! Or allow them to change the ride height between qualifying and the race! They don't think these things through.

WOW!

Wow. That was a brilliant race, can't believe Vettel has used all of his 8 engines, it will cost him if he has another engine failure.
Alonso - he just kept it on the road for 2:48:53.815.
Hamilton - Lucky.
Button - Unlucky.
Webber - Oh dear Mark...

Especially the bit where they started behind the safety car and then stopped after about four laps for hours. After this and the qualifying debacle at Japan, they need to sort it out.

Most drivers have. It doesn't mean he's "used them up". They rotate them. Several of his engines will still have some life in them.

If Vettel had won, he'd easily be odds on to take the title. Alonso still needs to rely on the easily superior Red Bull not making the most of its advantage in the last two races.
