There's a fair few plural conundrums in Touch Jr, among them DYBBUKS, FIZZOGS, HOOKAHS, HUBBUBS, HUZZAHS, JAZZBOS, JUJUBES, MUKLUKS, MUUMUUS, MZUNGUS, PAWPAWS, POWWOWS, QUOKKAS, WEEJUNS and ZIGZAGS.

Plurals are allowed in Touch Jnr (there weren't enough possible conundrums otherwise).

I have a feeling you've said this before. :? It's coming back now. How many conundrums are there, out of interest?

Slightly off-topic, but in response to Hugh's list of plural Jr Touchnundrums... you might want to note that WEEJUNS is not valid in its singular in ODE. I have no idea why (yes, you buy WEEJUNS - a type of loafer, apparently - in pairs, but it's quite plausible to refer to one of them) - a bit like FAJITAS or CORNFLAKES or BEESTINGS... but I guess the absence of the "singular" means that WEEJUNS would be a "valid" Junior conundrum anyway despite being a plural noun ending in S (were it not for the fact that it's probably been filtered out for being too obscure).

I just had the same problem in the conundrum round of a Hebrew 9-rounder (could only click one letter).

Presumably some by-product of me never having anything to show up on my 'news feed' thing on my apterous profile, but I just noticed that the oldest 5 entries are all the same thing.

Yeah, if the Duel results get reprocessed for some reason (usually because I screwed something up), the old notifications get reissued. Mostly it doesn't matter because weeks-old notifications have scrolled off, and it would be difficult to fix, so it's a low priority thing.

Conundrums aren't working – if I type something in the box, it lets me type but doesn't register a buzz (so I'll have the answer all typed in, but time will run out without the game acknowledging that I buzzed). I also tried clicking on the letter, which worked as far as buzzing goes, but the time limit for a single letter is applied to the entire conundrum (took me by surprise the first couple of times). Good thing I decided to do a conundrum attack before playing the Duel…

Hi Charlie. The Portuguese dictionary seems to be unavailable at the moment. It's probably intentional but I thought I'd mention it in case you weren't aware.

Thanks.

More of a query and a notifier than a bug report Charlie, but how did the conundrum in this game happen?
I 'buzzed' at 0.2 seconds as i was saying "gl" to Jim and he's too much of a cunt to bother saying it back when it isn't crucial even though he says we're friends.

My point being, you shouldn't be able to buzz in with any non-letter keys right? So if anything, my L from "gl" has to be the only thing that could activate a buzz, but there were no letters on screen in my 'guess' at all - indeed I let the patience timer run out, so the blank answer is my guess and is NOT me pressing space after my bad buzz. I realise I should have kept my java console log as it might have been helpful to you, so sorry about that. :( Just thought it was worth mentioning somehow - as far as I know no key presses were made other than "G", "L" and "ENTER".

In unlimited, seeing as the conundrums are the same as normal games, shouldn't you be awarded pieces of talc, gypsum etc when you buzz in and get them right?
Not sure if this applies to any other variant as I can't be arsed to check them all, but its probably just unlimited

This made me wonder why conundrums in unlimited aren't different from normal games. Would it work if duplicate letters were removed from them so you could reuse the letters in your guess?
e.g. scramble PINWOG would be POWWOWING, LUTEMIND would be UNLIMITED etc.

Or you could not limit it to 9's at all and have stuff like LENS = SENSELESSNESSES, HEAD = DEADHEADED, FOISTED = EISTEDDFODS – not necessarily words, even, like SLERT = TRESTLETREES…i.e. a relatively small number of letters with a unique max (preferably a pretty long one). This might actually be really useful as practice for spotting maxes. On the other hand, a lot of these would amount to typing/connection speed contests.

(I don't really like LUTEMIND = UNLIMITED, because there's at least a 10 – DIMINUENDI – from those letters…you'd have to require that all of the letters in the conundrum be used, like Omelette except that the extra letters are just duplicates…but since the conundrum in normal games is basically just "there's a super-duper max in the selection – spot it!", I'd personally rather have Unlimited conundrums be for spotting the Unlimited maxes – the 10's, 13's, &c. – if there were going to be special Unlimited conundrums at all.)

Would this not in fact limit the number of conundrums available for unlimited rather than 9060 that are available normally?

This same problem has happened with me too frequently today to be a coincidence.

I decided that I would make a start to climbing Mt Conundrum and whilst doing the conundrums I found I had buzzed in on 0.2 seconds without having pressed or clicked anything. At first I presumed I had pressed something but then it started happening more often before I realised that I definitely wasn't buzzing in. Here are some games from this afternoon where I "buzzed in" on 0.2 seconds every time:

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 3#r4363283

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 1#r4363171

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 2#r4362642

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 3#r4362343

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 4#r4362124

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 5#r4363935

This did on rare occasions work in my favour as I have now got two solves to my name in 0.2 seconds which I had never managed before. But again, I did not buzz in voluntarily.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 5#r4362885

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ga ... 4#r4363474

It's as if there is a ghost of Hansford lurking over my shoulder:

Basically because when I wrote Unlimited, I was a lot lazier in terms of what could constitute a new variant (hence the numbers being the same too). I can't really change it now without devaluing all the existing high scores and what-have-you.

Not quite. If I missed a conundrum or made a typing error then going onto the next one I would bang the Enter button repeatedly (in frustration) and by doing this just before the conundrum pops up it buzzed me in automatically on 0.2, which I never knew. So the moral of the story is that aggression is good.

How long do unfinished games take to clear these days? They used to disappear within a few days, but I've had one stuck there for weeks now (it was a n00b who disappeared after round 1).

If you try typing stuff after you've accepted a conundrum round, it buzzes you in automatically at the very start of the round with a free choice of starting letter, as seen here and possibly here.

Basically they don't ever clear. They were never supposed to, either, but back in the day the data file used to change format or get corrupted fairly frequently. Probably I should do something about this.

Come to think about it, there's really no need to show challenges at all for players who aren't online. It's something of a throwback to the old system which was so flaky that people needed constant reassurance that their game didn't disappear when the other person got disconnected. That would basically solve this problem at a stroke, right?

Don't you then run the risk of everyone having millions of unfinished games that they don't know about, thus using up the Internet and bringing the world to a Countdowny Armageddon?

On the subject of Duels, I looked at the GOTW page yesterday and saw that The Duellist 0-18 Innis had received a nomination.

This was before I had played the duel but Innis' score was still displayed.

The number of bonus points for a teaser are wrongly reported when time's up if more than 1 person solved the teaser:

2010-09-12 12:04:51 Your new teaser is IDERMSEE. You have 60 seconds to answer!
2010-09-12 12:05:40 Matthew Tassier got it first. You have 11.7 seconds left.
2010-09-12 12:05:51 Time's up and Matthew Tassier was the only person to get it; he solved it in 48.3 seconds and receives 13 bonus points. The answer to IDERMSEE was REMEDIES.

2010-09-12 12:14:51 Your new teaser is SESTGATE. You have 60 seconds to answer!
2010-09-12 12:14:59 Matthew Tassier got it first. You have 52.2 seconds left.
2010-09-12 12:15:19 Matt Bayfield got it too, you have 32.2 seconds left.
2010-09-12 12:15:21 Graeme Cole got it too, you have 30.4 seconds left.
2010-09-12 12:15:52 Time's up and 3 people got a point; Matthew Tassier was the fastest on 7.8 seconds and gets 2 bonus points. The answer to SESTGATE was GESTATES.

I think I actually got 17 bonus points for the 2nd one.

I'm almost there. All the accents have been removed and I've changed the letter distribution to match that of Scrabble, which also means dropping a few letters completely since they don't occur naturally in Portuguese (K and W, I think). The only thing left to do is to remove the very small number of words with those letters in from the dictionary and then everything should work. Should be ready to go this week.

I think this is just a typo and was meant to say Step Letters Attack, which doesn't appear anywhere else. Similarly, it should be "Lightning" and not "Lightdown" Goatdown 15.

Excellent stuff Charlie. Thanks. This will make things a whole lot more interesting. Records WILL be broken (not necessarily by me though). But I am passing through Porto on my way to Galicia at the end of the week so, who knows, maybe I'll absorb a bit more vocab!

I was looking at the "Most maxes" page on Statland, and I noticed that the figure for German 15 was 14 maxes (tied twice). This game is bug-affected, and I'm assuming the other two 14-max games are too (wherever they may be).

http://www.apterous.org/gamearchive.php

The following dates are missing, for whatever reason (presumably apterous wasn't online all day so no games played):
December 9th 2009
August 28th & 29th 2009
March 18th 2009
February 14th 2009 <3

and the tables for those months are skewed strangely as a result.

I think he thinks it's a small joke, or he should like more English on the page, as much as possible.

Yes, the question was "what did you enter in the boxes", not "what are the labels on the boxes" which believe it or not I can actually see for myself. Raymond Benjamin is your name, not your username. New users don't have usernames, so you need to enter your email address. I should probably hurry up and phase out usernames altogether.
