Welcome to the Robinson Recap. Guaranteed to make you laugh, if not inform. Or is it the other way round :?: Either way, enjoy. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Wednesday 7 July 2010.

C1: Champion Ryan Loughborough (5 wins, 429 points.) An Apterite from Durham, but grew up in Devon, after being born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He is a student of computer studies at Sunderland University. He describes himself as a rotten footballer, and is a supporter of Sheffield United, although his father, like Jeff, supports Hartlepool United. (Huddersfield Town any day of the week for me. ;) :) :D )
C2: Challenger Jill Cartwright. From Wednesfield, Wolverhampton, West Midlands. She has been married to her husband, Dennis for 36 years. DC: Susie Dent and Gino D'Acampo.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: W T Y O A M N E T

C1: WOMAN (5)
C2: YEOMAN (6)
DC: TOMENTA (7)
Score: 0–6 (max 7)

A tricky bunch of letters to start the day, but our challenger takes the early lead, while DC spot the darrenic 7. 8-)

Round 2: D S A I F D U I L

C1: FLUIDS (6)
C2: FLUIDS (6)
OT: LADDUS (6)
Score: 6–12 (max 13)

Round 3: U A N P N E O R C

C1: pouncer
C2: pouncer
DC: POUNCE (6) CAPER (5) CAPON (5) APRON (5)
Score: 6–12 (max 19)

WOAH :!: WOAH :!: WOAH :!: Pouncer seems to have just vanished from the dictionary all of a sudden. Well, since it was disallowed when Oliver Garner was the challenger, about 6 months ago. The recapper clearly hasn't picked it up, as pouncer is still valid according to it. :? :o

Round 4: T S I U L M E O B

C1: MOBILES (7)
C2: SUBTLE (6)
DC: BOLETUS (7)
OT: BOTULISM (8)
Score: 13–12 (max 27)

Ryan takes the lead for the first time today, and surprisingly the darrenic 8 is missed by everyone.

Round 5: 100, 4, 10, 2, 7, 6. Target: 150.

C1: 150. ((7 - 2) x 10) + 100 (10)
C2: 150. ((7 - 4 + 2) x 10) + 100 (10)
Score: 23–22 (max 37)

Gino talks about his book, The Italian Diet.

Teatime teaser: CHOSEALE -> SHOELACE

Round 6: H E O T N A J O N

C1: HOOT (4)
C2: thanet
DC: HENNA (5) TENON (5) THE (3)
OT: ANENT (5) ATONE (5) OATEN (5) NEATH (5) THANE (5) NONET (5) TONNE (5) OHONE (5) OOJAH (5)
Score: 27–22 (max 42)

Another stiunky set, made even worse for Jill when she declares a 6 with a phantom T, and the 6 isn't even in the dictionary either, when only as that place in Kent.

ANENT means "beside" or "in regard to".
OHONE is a Scottish and Irish English term for "Alas!". Any Scots or Irishmen on here use that word :?:

Round 7: T F M E O U Z P R

C1: FORUM (5)
C2: ROUTE (5)
DC: POUTER (6)
OT: POMFRET (7)
Score: 32–27 (max 49)

A POMFRET is any of several scombroid fishes of the family Bramidae, found in the North Atlantic and Pacific.

Round 8: T T A O R E V C U

C1: CUTTER (6)
C2: COVER (5)
DC: OVERACT (7)
OT: COUVERT (7) CUTOVER (7) OUTRACE (7)
Score: 38–27 (max 56)

Round 9: A O P T S I E V G

C1: POTAGES (7)
C2: POSTAGE (7)
OT: ATOPIES (7) OPIATES (7)
Score: 45–34 (max 63)

An ATOPY (plural ATOPIES) is an allergy, involving an inherited immunoglobulin of the IgE type, that predisposes a person to certain allergic responses, as atopic dermatitis.

Susie's Origin Of Words tells of the origin of "negligee", "bra" and other Victorian words for undergarments.

Round 10: 100, 5, 2, 1, 7, 10. Target: 506.

C1: 506. (100 x 5) + 7 - 1 (10)
C2: 506. (100 x 5) + 7 - 1 (10)
Score: 55–44 (max 73)

CECIL seems to be kind today with his numbers targets, so far.....

Teatime teaser: MODEISON -> DOMINOES

Round 11: D I E L X N I A T

C1: TAILED (6)
C2: exiled
DC: DILATE (6) LANDTIE (7)
Score: 61–44 (max 80)

Jill's 2nd E seems to have been EXILED there.

Round 12: S C S E I A M K I

C1: SICKIES (7)
C2: CASES (5)
DC: SEASICK (7)
OT: ASEISMIC (8)
Score: 68–44 (max 88)

I was quite happy finding both those 7's mentioned there, until I saw there was a very nice darrenic 8 available. Well done to Dinos for spotting that 1. ;) :) :D

Round 13: G H R U E G B I E

C1: BUGGIER (7)
C2: BIGGER (6)
OT: HEURIGE (7)
Score: 75–44 (max 95)

A brilliant 7 spot ther by Ryan, which seals him the match. I was stuck on BUGGER myself.

HEURIGE is a local white wine made in the Vienna region of Austria and drunk when it is very young.

Round 14: 75, 8, 5, 7, 7, 2. Target: 275.

C1: 281.
C2: 276. ((8 - 3) x 75) + (7 x 7) + 2 (7)
RR: 275. ((7 - 2) x 5 x 8) + 75 (10)
Score: 75–51 (max 105)

A trickier numbers game is brought up here, where Ryan shows his frailties in numbers, as Jill's 1 away gets her past the 50 mark, while Rachel cleans up.

Round 15: A C C E R U B E N

C2 buzzes on 25 seconds to say CUMBRANCE which is incorrect.
C1 does not buzz.
The answer was BUCCANEER.
Score: 75–51 (max 115)

The conundrum seemed to deceive everyone, but then Jill buzzes in with a 9 letter word....., with an M in it. It's left to an audience member to wrap this one up.

So, Ryan has now won his 6th game and despite not playiong at his best today, he still put in a good enough performance when it mattered. Can he reach the magnificent 7 omorrow :?:

I'll be back tomorow, so we can find out. ;) :) :D

Till then, bye bye.
