Bash Week

Post by Ben Wilson »

With the Masters now concluded, I've decided it's high time there's another aptobash before the next major online tourney. In fact, it's been so long since the last one, I've decided there should be NINE bashes before the next tournament. Hence my latest creation- Bash Week.

Every evening at 7:30pm for nine days, starting on May 29th (the Saturday after Co:Lon) and ending on June 6th, there will be a 5-game minibash- a swiss-paired, one-night tournament like all the previous bashes/minibashes. Each bash will have its winners and losers, and the combined results will decide an overall winner for the nine days.

'...And it'll be Kirk Bevins,' I hear you all cry. Not this time. The bash formats have been carefully selected to be as diverse as possible without being too niche (there's no unlimited, for example, and no omelette letters). They'll all be twenty-round 'attacks', a letters, numbers or conundrum attack, but from slightly off the beaten track (one of them doesn't even have a leaderboard yet and TTBOMK hasn't ever been played). I honestly couldn't predict who's going to win this one.

'I don't want to play tourneys nine days in a row,' I also hear you cry. No worries. No one's obliged to play in all the bashes, play in as many or as few as you want. Obviously the more you play, the better your chances of coming out on top.

'So what are these anti-Kirk formats then?' Very good question. All will be revealed in time. :)

If you're interested, express that interest below. I'll be using tsh to do the fixtures on the night so I can be flexible on late entries/drop-outs.

If nothing else, it's something to tide you over until the Summer Open.

I'm really intrigued as to what these formats might be, especially as Ben has already said there won't be anything too niche, so presumably foreign languages are ruled out. I guess there could be some Junior in there, as this levels the field a bit, but I don't think there is an "anti-Kirk" format amongst the regular stuff, certainly not things like Goatdown or Touchdown, which definitely favour the uber-players. As does any kind of speed round, as does Blind. Interesting stuff anyway.

"Bash Week" sounds similar to "Mock the Week". I thought the analogy was funny, Gavin. 8-)

Because I'm in a mood to generate some intrigue tonight, here are the first three formats the bashes will take-

Saturday 29th May will be a Letters Attack Bash... Flat-scoring Letters Attack, that is.

Sunday 30th May will have a Touch Jnr Letters Attack bash.

Monday 31st May will have a Nasty Numbers Attack bash. Might play in this one myself if I can find someone to direct it for me. :)

Will reveal the next six as and when. Peace out. :)

The next three bashes are revealed:

Tuesday 1st June sees me completely going back on what I said in the first post by being an unlimited letters attack day. With flat scoring of course, just to level the field a little.

Wednesday 2nd June is another letters attack bash, this time it's standard scoring, and the near-insanity that is hypergoatdown.

Thursday 3rd June is an omelette numbers attack bash.

These may seem a bit straightforward but believe me, the final three bashes will be quite different. You'll also notice there have been no conundrum bashes so far. These two points are not unrelated. :)

I'm now unavailable for this coming Saturday's opening bash. And yes, it is Eurovision-related, of which I'm wholeheartedly proud.

I'll try to take part in as many of the others as possible. Even if just to make the numbers up, considering how phenomenally awful I am at things like Nasty Numbers.

Good to see people getting excited about this- time is right methinks to reveal the final three bashes.

Friday 4th June will be a letters attack, played in Goatdown.. but with stepdown scoring for that added tactical edge (thanks to the Raccoon for the idea for that one).

Saturday 5th June will be a hyper numbers attack- but played with flat scoring.

Sunday 6th June will be a conundrum attack bumper pack- taking advantage of the fact that the maximum score in each game will always be 200, each round of the minibash will have a different type of conundrum attack be it regular, omelette, hypergoat... all will be revealed on the day. :)

If you could pm me the dates you want to play please so I can get a spreadsheet going I'd be grateful, though as stated above if you just show up as of the evening and ask to play there won't be a problem inserting you into the bash.

Quick reminder that this kicks off tomorrow night- if you want in, simply pm me or show up on the night and state you want in. All bashes will kick off at 7:30 (assuming this doesn't clash with Doctor Who) and entry for each one will close at 7:25.

Happy bashing!

Congratulations to Lloyd Pettet on winning day 2, coming from behing to narrowly edge out an on-form Hugh Binnie. Hugh does have the consolation of now being in the lead of the combined bash week standings with 7 wins out of 10.

...And, while I'm at it, don't forget tomorrow's bash is slightly different- a Nasty Numbers Attack bash, taking all the letters specialists right out of their comfort zones. As always, kick off is tomorrow at 7:30. :)

Day 3 and the Nasty Numbers has ended with a somewhat unexpected and total Kirk Bevins victory, the Bevatron proving just as deadly with the numbers as he is with the words with a whopping score of 197 in the final round. Full results can be found, as always, here.

Hugh's still in the lead of the overall bash with 10 wins and +118 with Innis in second with 7 wins and +46, Andrew Feist is third with 6 wins and -79.

Sorry Ben - I'm going to have to give up. I just can't get back into Apterous. I'll just have to forfeit my game against Joyce. I was never going to beat her by 50 points anyway (probably not even by 5 points!).

Thanks for organising it though - it was fun while it lasted.

Congratulations to Lloyd on winning today's bash despite immense amounts of lag flattening virtually all of the games (I've declared the other two games as 0-0 bye draws, for the record, and not counted for overall standings purposes. This can always be undone later if you have a specific objection).

Speaking of the overall standings, Hugh still leads on 13 wins- the only person to play in all 4 bashes- but Lloyd's slowly reeling him in, currently sitting second with 9 wins.

Hopefully the server will behave itself for the hypergoat letters attack bash tomorrow- kicking off at 7:30 as always! :)

Day 5 ends with a crushing victory for Jack Hurst- currently on 4 wins out of 4 and unassailable at the top and has managed the impressive feat of being Gibsonized in a five-game tournament. Hugh will still mantain his lead at the top of the overall standings, though.

Apologies for having to duck out early last night but the thunderstorm raging above was terminating my internet connection every two minutes, and as I've had modems explode before as a result of lightning strikes, I've become a little wary of them.

Anyways, congratulations to Matthew on winning the hyper numbers duel, which including a whopping score of 197/195 (no, really) in round 4. Hugh has done enough however to win the week outright, so congratulations to the first ever bash week champion, Hugh Binnie!

Bash week ends tonight with the conundrum bumper fun pack- 5 rounds, 5 different conundrum attacks. All will be revealed tonight at 7pm (earlier than usual).
