Lyrics game

Person who gets it right sets the next one, and so on.
Gonna pull down your defences
Tear you apart
My laser guided love-beam's headed straight for your heart

Presumably this is from a hit from an established artist.

It should be familiar to enough people to make it gettable.

Does it ring any bells?

It sounds like something annoying like The Darkness.
The words look familiar for sure but then they're song-y enough to look familiar anyway I think.

Probably worth pointing out in your OP there should be no Googling just to make it clear Jon, though you'd hope people would only want to play if it's done properly.

Well yeah, it should go without saying really. I still think there's some knackers who will Google anything though, which is why it's so difficult to set puzzles online. This one is deliberately Google-proof though :)

I like your style! Not afraid to admit you tempted me into a quick search just because I wanted to see what you meant, and you're right, no results!

Are the written lyrics true to their performance, or is part of the game that you have paraphrased them so as to prevent Googlery?

I'm relying on my memory somewhat, but I'm fairly sure they're accurate. I mean, the "headed" might've been "heading" or something like that, but nothing important.

Sorry to side track... I too believed for a long time that 'quadriplegic' meant someone who had lost all four of their limbs (first bumped into the word on a very old X-Files episode about a guy who'd lost all four limbs and had developed psychic abilities), but Badcock told me off and Wikipedia research indeed learned me that quadriplegia and paraplegia are overarchingly concerned with just the loss of the use of limbs, be that 'merely' paralysis, or full physical loss.

So, to set my mind at ease, does anyone know if there is a proper term for someone who is physically missing both legs and arms, other than just something like 'quadruple amputee'?

It's from a pretty old BT advert featuring ET. Some bloke's kid finds an old vinyl which inspires him to get in touch with his old bandmates. Can't remember the band name though.

It was more supposed to annoy other people, that they recognised the lyrics but could not place them.

But yeah, I would like to know the answer. For next time I decide to set it in a lyrics game :)

Good stuff that. Don't really remember the advert myself. (youtube anyone?)

Certainly very hard Jon, I think this would have been a great way to kill off a lyrics game thread rather than start one though! :) tough precedent to follow.

Yeah, I didn't really care much for starting the game, I just wanted to be a bit of a prick - I did hope that more people would recognise it and it would bug them. As I said, a lyrics game would be kinda pointless because people will just Google it. As they did here.

Could've been, I'd have thought I'd have recognised it as soon as I'd heard it though. I've got a nagging feeling it was more a sort of portmanteau rather than just being a word. Dunno really.

Nonsense, we can have a bit of craic without cheating, right? Well, i'm willing to try anyway... so here goes:

'Got a head full of lightning and a hat full of rain'

Very well known songwriter, but a recent enough record so perhaps not such a well known song. If noone's got it by the time I split from college in a couple of hours i'll give it away and someone else can have a go...

Didn't know that one, Andy. Something a little different/partially google-proof. The artists associated with the following lyrics are connected by the name of a band - which band?

"You and me, we have an opportunity
And we could make it something really cool"

"Oh - thinkin' about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free"

"You better run, you better do what you can
Don't wanna see no blood, don't be a macho man"

"At six foot six and a hundred tons
the undisputed king of the slums
With more alias' than Klaus Barbie
the master butcher of Leigh-on-Sea"

"Warm sun feed me up
And I'm leery loaded up
Loathing for a change
And I slip some boil away"

OK so Bob's was solved, very good! Jon's is still unsolved and remains a mystery to everyone. Here's my half-assed attempt at something lyrically puzzling.

"I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life"

"Fire all of your guns at once and explode into space"

"Windmill, windmill for the land turn forever hand in hand"

"You took a left off last laugh lane"
What links 'em?

Quite straightforward

Second one is Steppenwolf - 'Born To Be Wild', fourth one is Arctic Monkeys - 'Fluorescent Adolescent'. Don't know the other two and can't think of a connection unless it's something to do with stages of aging or summat.

Yep, nice one James. MADISON Avenue, Bryan ADAMS, Michael JACKSON, CARTER U.S.M., BUSH, and connection is PRESIDENTS OF THE USA

Didn't Jon's get solved? (Stratosphere was the band I think).

EDIT: The windmill one is Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz

I thought someone already said it was Fluorescent Adolescent by The Arctic Monkeys.
So the connection (Gorrilaz, The Turtles, Steppenwolf) was The Animals, or they have animals in the band titles.

3 different songs all released in the same year ('85 I think) all titled The Power of Love by (I think) Huey Lewis and The News, Jennifer Rush and erm... someone else possibly Billy something.

All from songs called "The Power of Love", and you've taken the mid-eighties triumvirate of Huey Lewis and The News, Jennifer Rush and Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Okay then, try these:

"With a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat"...

and

"If Joan of Arc had a heart, Would she give it as a gift"
