Monday 22nd March 2010 (Series 62, Prelim 46)

Post by James Robinson »

Well, this is seeming to become a habit for me. James Robinson, Babysitter-In-Chief comes to the rescue again. First, Oliver, now Kai. So, while Master Laddiman gets on with his chores, it's up to me to bring us back from the nearly-full week off from Countdown. So, enjoy. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Monday 22 March 2010.

C1: Champion Kevin Davis (5 wins, 450 points.) From Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. He loves Formula 1, Britpop music and Arsenal. His most memorable experience was taking a tour of the Emirates Stadium and meeting John Radford. He does admit though that he hasn't watched them play there yet. He is also a keen vexilologist, which is a collector of flags to you and I. :geek:
C2: Challenger Dave Wilkinson. From Coalville, Leicestershire. He works as a housing officer. He lives with Joanne and their 6 and a half week old son, Elliott. His other memorable experience was riding down the Olympic bobsleigh run in Innsbruck, Austria. He also supports Lincoln City.
DC: Susie Dent and Gregg Wallace, making his DC debut today, and saying that anyone who doesn't like rhubarb crumble should have their UK citizenship revoked. Right, I'm off then :!:
RR: Rachel "The Countdown Chick" Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: R I Z E V H A W S

C1: WAIVERS (7)
C2: VARIES (6)
DC: WHARVES (7) WASHIER (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

A nice start by the champ there, as DC get the other 2 7's.

Round 2: L E I D R R I N X

C1: ELIXIR (6)
C2: RIDER (5)
DC: INLIER (6)
OT: LINIER (6)
Score: 13–0 (max 13)

Another good find by Kevin, keeps him on the road to maxdom. 8-)

Round 3: Y D O T E O S F E

C1: DOTES (5)
C2: SOOTED (6)
OT: FEYEST (6) FOOTED (6)
Score: 13–6 (max 19)

Unfortunately, Kevin goes off course as he gets SOOTED by Dave.

Round 4: T G U E R S B U I

C1: BUSTIER (7)
C2: grubiest
DC: GUTSIER (7) GUSTIER (7)
Score: 20–6 (max 26)

But, he gets back on track after Dave's incorrectly spelt 8.

Round 5: 75, 100, 25, 3, 9, 6. Target: 515.

C1: 515. Mistake in working.
C2: 516. (6 x 100) - 75 - 9 (7)
RR: 515. ((100 + 75) x 3) - 25 + 9 + 6 (10)
Score: 20–13 (max 36)

This seems likely to be a to-and-fro game today, after Kevin's mistake with the numbers.

Gregg tells of the time he was in a taxi at an airport, and tried to avoid chatting to the cab driver, whereas the cabbie actually wanted to know which terminal he wanted to take Gregg to.

Teatime teaser: LUNARBUM -> ALBURNUM

Round 6: V N E A T S H E T

C1: EVENTS (6)
C2: SHAVEN (6)
DC: HEAVENS (7) SEVENTH (7)
OT: NEATEST (7)
Score: 26–19 (max 43)

Round 7: P A O C J L I B O

C1: opalic
C2: POLIO (5)
OT: BLOOP (5) BOOAI (5) COBIA (5) COPAL (5) PLICA (5) POOJA (5)
Score: 26–24 (max 48)

Kevin gets his OPALESCENCE derivatives mixed up, as the gap shrinks to 2 points.

Round 8: Q T A I C T A C A

C1: TACTIC (6)
C2: ACACIA (6)
OT: ATACTIC (7) ATTACCA (7)
Score: 32–30 (max 55)

ATACTIC means not stereospecific or lacking tacticity.
ATTACCA is a musical term, meaning to begin immediately.

Round 9: N O T G M I E S I

C1: GNOMES (6)
C2: MOISTEN (7)
DC: MINGIEST (8)
OT: TIMESING (8) MITOGENS (8)
Score: 32–37 (max 63)

Kevin's short 6, gives Dave the chance to take the lead, which he takes.

Susie's Guess The Origin with Jeff in the hotseat.
Today's word is KNOBBER. (Prepare for more giggles.)

Is it:
a) A short thick stick with a knobbed head   used as a weapon or missile by South African peoples.
b) A stag in its second year of life.
c) A young lad whose job it was in the late 19th Century to wake up members of a household by banging a stick against their doorknobs and waking them up each morning.

Jeff goes with a), but Gregg ruling out the other 2 logically gave the right answer of b). Although most of it becomes irrelevant after Susie's slightly unavoidable knob knocking gag.

Round 10: 25, 100, 1, 2, 8, 4. Target: 894.

C1: 894. ((8 + 1) x 100) - (4 + 2) (10)
C2: 894. ((8 + 1) x 100) - (4 + 2) (10)
Score: 42–47 (max 73)

Teatime teaser: TEDSCOOP -> POSTCODE

Round 11: E D R A D M E R D

C1: DREAMED (7)
C2: DREAMER (7)
DC: REARMED (7)
OT: DREADED (7)
Score: 49–54 (max 80)

Round 12: T S E A L M S O N

C1: MANTLES (7)
C2: STOLEN (6)
DC: MALTOSE (7)
OT: ETALONS (7) LAMENTS (7) MANTELS (7) LOMENTS (7) MANLESS (7) MOLESTS (7) NOSEMAS (7) OMENTAL (7) TELAMON (7) STAMENS (7) TELSONS (7)
Score: 56–54 (max 87)

The lead again returns to Kevin.

A TELAMON is a bound collection of maps.
A TELSON is the last segment, or an appendage of the last segment, of certain arthropods, as the middle flipper of a lobster's tail.

Round 13: L A G D O A G N O

C1: LAGOON (6)
C2: GONDOLA (7)
DC: GONADAL (7)
OT: LONGDOG (7)
Score: 56–61 (max 94)

The lead goes back to Dave. How long will this switching leads continue for :?: :?

Round 14: 1, 5, 3, 3, 10, 6. Target: 810.

C1: 810. (5 + 3 + 1) x (6 + 3) x 10 (10)
C2: 800.
Score: 66–61 (max 104)

Dave's 6 small gamble backfires, as he goes from being 5 points up to 5 points down :!:

So, a crucial conundrum will decide the outcome of this game.

Round 15: T A C K I P L U M

C2 buzzes on 20 seconds to say MULTIPACK which is correct.
Score: 66–71 (max 114)

And it's Dave who nips in with 10 seconds to go and end Kevin's run.

A very tight game which swung back and forth, back and forth and back again. But, Dave is the new champ. As he accumulated the most points of the 3 contestants on 5 wins, Kevin goes above Raheel & Jan to the #3 spot on the table, so there will probably be a good chance of seeing him in the finals in 3 months time.

Tomorrow, Dinos will take charge, while I'll be back with the Robinson Recap Double Bill on Wednesday & Thursday.

So till then, bye bye.

It's far from unavoidable, you just have to relax and tilt your head back.

Nice. ;-) Though I suppose the gag was always on the cards given that Susie had been offered an impressive 7...

Incidentally, [brag] this was my best armchair game for a long time. 13 maxes... I was just out-of-time on HEAVENS and didn't think MINGIEST would be good.[/brag]
