Wednesday 17th February 2010 (Ser. 62, Prelim 28)

Post by James Robinson »

Welcome to the first part of the Robinson Recap. As today is the birthday of our founder, the brilliantly uncomparable Mr. Reams, I'm dedicating this recap to the brilliant man himself.

Hope you approve. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Wednesday 17 February 2010.

C1: Champion Christopher Smith (1 win, 81 points.) An Apterite from London. He's a mathematics student at University College, London. He's a member of their chess society and loves puzzle solving and playing cards. His favourite place is the West End.
C2: Challenger Heather Badcock. Another Apterite from London. She's a teacher and head of Religious Studies at her secondary school. She enjoys karaoke, cooking, listening to Guns N' Roses and "other dodgy rock music". She also claims to be an expert at East End slang and claims to be a "nang man", the opposite to "waste man". (People think understanding Yorkshire slang is hard enough :!: (And I'm not even a Yorkshireman :!: :!: ))
DC: Susie Dent and Graham Cole.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: T M R S O A I A W

C1: waitors
C2: WAIST (5)
DC: AMORIST (7)
Score: 0–5 (max 7)

Oh dear, Christopher will be waiting a good while for his imaginary WAITORS.

Round 2: T I D E S A K O N

C1: SEDATION (8)
C2: SEDATION (8)
OT: KENDOIST (8)
Score: 8–13 (max 15)

Round 3: M N D G E E I O N

C1: MENDING (7)
C2: NEEDING (7)
DC: EMENDING (8)
Score: 15–20 (max 23)

Round 4: L D A H I N U R I

C1: DIAL (4)
C2: DRAIN (5)
DC: DIURNAL (7)
JS: URINAL (6)
Score: 15–25 (max 30)

A horrible selection of letters, but DC get the darren, and even Jeff beats the contestants with his 6.

Round 5: 7, 2, 10, 8, 4, 1. Target: 372.

C1: 371. (((4 x 8) + 7 - 2) x 10) + 1 (7)
C2: 380.
RR: 372. (((2 + 8) x 10) - 7) x 4 (10)
Score: 22–25 (max 40)

Christopher follows on from Craig in going 6 small, and manages to 7 points, with Heather a bit away.

Graham tells of his time in Harlow, where he was the librarian at his comprehensive school and taking his first steps into the acting world.

Teatime teaser: MENDGILD -> MEDDLING

Round 6: Y E R C O S V E C

C1: COVERS (6)
C2: COVERS (6)
OT: COERCES (7) CORVEES (7) SECRECY (7)
Score: 28–31 (max 47)

A CORVEE is an obligation imposed on inhabitants of a district to perform services, as repair of roads, bridges, etc., for little or no remuneration.

Round 7: L D N Y O E A U R

C1: LAUNDER (7)
C2: UNDERLAY (8)
OT: ROUNDELAY (18)
Score: 28–39 (max 65)

Heather extends her lead with a nice 8, but everyone misses the 9.

A ROUNDELAY is a song in which a phrase, line, or the like, is continually repeated.

Round 8: T C E G O S P I R

C1: ROPIEST (7)
C2: ROPIEST (7)
DC: COPIERS (7)
OT: COPTERS (7) GOITRES (7) GORIEST (7) POETICS (7) PORGIES (7) RIPOSTE (7) TRICEPS (7) TROPICS (7)
Score: 35–46 (max 72)

Round 9: T F T J O E I A B

C1: fattie
C2: BEFIT (5)
DC: FEIJOA (6)
OT: JETBOAT (7)
Score: 35–51 (max 79)

Following from both Jeff & Rachel's failures, it's now Graham's turn to have a go at Susie's Call My Bluff.

He had to work out which definition of HODMANDOD was correct.
a) A heated whisky glass.
b) The apprentice, usually a young lad, who makes the tea on a building site for the bricklayers.
c) A scarecrow or any strange person that you'd normally encounter on the highways and by-ways of rural England.

Unfortunately, Graham makes it 3 out of 3 failures, as he incorrectly guesses a) as the answer. The answer was c).

Round 10: 50, 25, 4, 8, 2, 9. Target: 210.

C1: 210. (50 x 4) + 8 + 2 (10)
C2: 210. (50 x 4) + 8 + 2 (10)
Score: 45–61 (max 89)

Teatime teaser: FISHMICE -> MISCHIEF

Round 11: L S R V E I E I T

C1: REVISIT (7)
C2: RELIVES (7)
DC: LIVERIES (8) LEVITIES (8)
OT: VERITIES (8)
Score: 52–68 (max 97)

Interestingly, if the R was an L, then LIVELIEST would be there for 9. I only brought it up, because that was my conundrum on my first show, or as some prefer to call it, my third show.

A VERITY is the state or quality of being true; in accordance with fact or reality.

Round 12: T F E U N S E R I

C1: -
C2: REUNITES (8)
DC: INTERFUSE (18)
Score: 52–76 (max 115)

Oh dear. Christopher's mind goes blank and Heather takes full advantage, but DC get the darrenic 9.

Round 13: T P N L A O A E P

C1: PLANT (5)
C2: TOPPLE (6)
DC: PALPATE (7)
OT: POLENTA (7)
Score: 52–82 (max 122)

Game over, Heather's 6 puts the game beyond Christopher's reach.

Round 14: 100, 7, 3, 9, 10, 8. Target: 983.

C1: 983. (100 x 10) - 9 - 8 (10)
C2: 983. (9 x 100) + (8 x 10) + 3 (10)
Score: 62–92 (max 132)

Round 15: C A S H L I M B O

C1 buzzes on 17 seconds to say SHAMBOLIC which is correct.
Score: 72–92 (max 142)

Interestingly, CHOLIAMBS, verses having an iambus in the fifth place, and a spondee in the sixth or last, was an alternative 9, but the plural rule is now in force, so no worries there.

So, Heather becomes the first female champion since Jan Parker in Episode 1. How long can she keep going for :?:

Find out tomorrow in the 2nd half of this week's Robinson Recap double bill.

Till tomorrow, bye bye.

I often think Susie is a bit evil when she disallows words, by saying "yes" and laughing before adding that the word is not there as an afterthought.
