This week's games are posted on the website.

From Flight A:
The missing Peter Lee-Andy Wilson match was scored as 0-0.

From Flight B:
I am missing John Gillies vs. James Levison from last week. If you can either point me to those results or make those up, I would appreciate it.

The Speed Demon:
I am missing the matches Dinos Sfyris vs. Ian Dent, Dinos Sfyris vs. Martin May, Simon Myers vs. Lesley Hines, Kieran Child vs. Matt Morrison, Matt Morrison vs. Nick Wainwright, Lesley Hines vs. Kieran Child, James Hurrell vs. Oliver Garner, Kai Laddiman vs. Jon Corby, and Andy Wilson vs. Peter Lee. Get on those games, please, or let me know what's going on.

Myself and J Levinson scheduled our game for tonight, erroneously believing that Sunday was the last day for matches. Can we still play, or is it too late?
Sorry to have cocked it up.

Charlie Reams 72 - 20 Stuart Arnot
Stuart couldn't seem to get started in this game, while I played steadily and surprised myself by nailing a tricky numbers game on 9.9 seconds.

Charlie Reams 70-60 Stuart Arnot
A completely different story: I played well but with both of us maxing 7 of the first 8 rounds, I just couldn't shake him. Deadlocked on 60-60, we faced a disappointingly easy conundrum which required a second for me to talk myself into (is VAPOUR a verb?). Stuart had spotted it too and I only narrowly outbuzzed him.

Cheers Stuart, could easily have been 1-1 on another day.

Michael Wallace 2 - 0 Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier 70 - 95 Michael Wallace

I completely blank on the first numbers but manage to drag it back with some (for me) moderately consistent lettering. Matthew's spots of ALPACA and PERUSAL were the highlights of the game, imo.

Michael Wallace 100 - 97 Matthew Tassier

Very flat for the most part, the difference coming from Matthew's spot of DIOPTRE. Fortunately I got lucky on the conundrum (all too often you find yourself behind at the conundrum and something impossible comes out), to squeak through. Matthew even had VIOLATOR noted down in round 11, which would have won it for him.

Speed games:

Matthew Tassier 53 - 31 Tom Rowell
Tom Rowell 45 - 51 Matthew Tassier

Two fairly unimpressive games, except maybe for Tom's DEACONED, and I survived a crucial conundrum to record my first 2-0 victory.

Well fuck me. Just played the greatest game of all time.

Kirk Bevins 89 - 83 Ben Wilson

And then this beaut....

Kirk Bevins 151 - 135 Ben Wilson

With 12 maxes in a row I got excited, including FOUR nines in a row. Was incredible. Flake and ambulance city. But wait, round 13 I thought I'd maxed but I didn't --- Ben is right back in the game now with his FIFTH consecutive nine and I'm kicking myself for missing it -- would have been on for a mammoth score.

A crucial conundrum and I nail it in 0.8 seconds to secure the 2-0 win, a 151-135 victory and a 14 max game, although had I knew SPOONIER = POISONER I could have had a 169 game, smashing Conor's record that lots thought would never be beaten. Argh!!!!

This is one for the thread of brag, the thread of frustration AND the game of the year thread.

From the speed demon:
Lee 18 - 52 Feist
I spot a couple decent 8's. In round 7 I make up a word, but that's okay because the dictionary beat me to it so it counts.
Feist 50 - 38 Lee
I start this game by spotting Peter 18 points, but get both the numbers and take the crucial for the win.

My speed demon games against Ian resulted in one win each:

Julie Taylor 46 - 29 Ian Dent

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=150688

Julie Taylor 34 - 46 Ian Dent

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=150699

wd for Ian, getting a 9 in a 10 second round. It's not often I cause a man to get ERECTIONS these days. ;)

My main tourney game against Lesley was 2-1 to me:

Lesley Hines 81 - 62 Julie Taylor

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=150721

Lesley Hines 84 - 93 Julie Taylor

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=150736

Julie Taylor 96 - 95 Lesley Hines

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=150755

Lesley lost a very close game there, despite getting 2 9s. That seems sort of familiar....... :?

Apterous Winter Closed Week 3.5

Post by Andrew Feist »

Since it's not really a surprise, the three matches (one extra next week!) for the Speed Demon have been posted on the website. Hopefully the advance notice will help us get all the games in by the end of next Saturday (I'm looking at you, pool B).

Week 2 - Speed Demon Pool B

Apologies should have posted earlier....

James Hurrell 1-1 Oliver Garner

Oliver comfortably took game 1...

James Hurrell 41-71 Oliver Garner

then I hit back with a decent (unusually so) conundrum spot to pinch game 2. Honours even.

James Hurrell 43-39 Oliver Garner

Thanks for the games Oliver - feel 1-1 isn't quite fair on you.

Flight A result:-

Henry Meier 1-2 Lee Simmonds

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=151802 Henry 114 - 96 Lee

Good game to start, Henry taking an early 8 point lead in rd 2 with latticed. Despite a couple of nice spots of my own, I could not close the gap thus ensuring a crucial conundrum. A fairly quick spot by Henry and deservedly 1-0 to him.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=151816 Lee 106 - 94 Henry

Again, I fell behind in rd 2 and then further behind in rd 4 with a word I really should have spotted! However, it could have been worse and game over had I not seen the 9 in rd 3 at the last second. After clawing back 1 round and with Henry missing a fairly straightforward numbers in rd 14, I found myself ahead for the first time in 29 rounds but still facing a crucial conundrum. Fortunately, a quick spot by me ensured a decider.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=151828 Henry 80 - 105 Lee

A combination of not great letters and perhaps nervous tension made for an inauspicious start to game 3. However, it was notable for both of us offering the same words and numbers solution in the first 7 rounds. I managed to break the deadlock in rd 8 and then a further winning rd on the last letters meant avoiding another crucial conundrum.

Great games, I thought and another day could easily have gone Henry's way.

Me and Simon Myers finally got round to playing our flight match. We started off on good form but eventually went downhill. Luckily Simon deteriorated at a faster rate than me, and I managed to seal the deal 2-1, despite my medical hindrance of Conundrum Tourette's in Game 1 and Fat fingers in game 3.

Oliver 82-114 Innis

Close stuff throughout, Oliver's excellent spot of NANOMETRE led him to victory in the second game, but I narrowly won the decider.
