Friday 6 November 2009. Series 61, Prelim. 80

Post by Allan Harmer »

Countdown recap for Friday 6 November 2009.

C1: Champion Ryan Taylor (1 win, 97 points.)
Apterist Ryan has got his teapot and achieved his life's ambition. That is a very noble ambition too Ryan. It is good to see that he is an all round quiz fanatic, like most of us, and he is in love with his Sky Plus Box! Who isn't???
C2: Challenger Chris Civil.
Chris also has a noble ambition, which is to drink in 2009 pubs in the year 2009. He is on track to achieve this and has managed more than 1600 pubs so far. He also likes Terry Pratchett novels and The Orkneys.
DC: Susie Dent and Dr Hilary Jones.
Nice to see another Dr on the show and Dr Hilary seems to be enjoying himself in DC.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: A R E L F R I E G

C1: FILAGREE (8)
C2: FRAGILE (7)
DC: LEAFIER (7) EARLIER (7)
OT: FERRIAGE (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)
An excellent spot by Ryan of this variant spelling of FILIGREE, proving the benefit of his apterous training
Round 2: S U E T W O T Y R

C1: TOWERS (6)
C2: swotter
DC: TRUSTY (6) STOUTER (7)
OT: OUTSERT (7) TOUTERS (7)
Score: 14–0 (max 15)
Bad luck to Chris. That was a reasonable assumption. However, swotted was rejected quite recently and it is an easy trap for a rookie to fall into. This is a useful looking lead for Ryan.

Round 3: E Y X S I R E A B

C1: SEXIER (6)
C2: SEXIER (6)
DC: RABIES (6) REBASE (6)
OT: AERIES (6) EASIER (6) BEIRAS (6) BRAISE (6) EYRIES (6) IBEXES (6) YERBAS (6)
Score: 20–6 (max 21)
Sixes in abundance but a darrenic seven proves to be elusive.
Round 4: S I U E G N L Q I

C1: GUISE (5)
C2: SEQUIN (6)
DC: QUISLING (8)
Score: 20–12 (max 29)

Round 5: 3, 4, 2, 9, 1, 100. Target: 795.

C1: 795. (9-1)x100-(3+2) (10)
C2: 795. (9-1)x100-(3+2) (10)
Score: 30–22 (max 39)

Dr Hilary plugs his book and then goes on to tell us about one of his ageing lady patients who showed a high level of alcohol in her liver test. She claimed that she had a healthy lifestyle and didn't drink. The doc managed to ascertain that she took Bach (pronounced Batch) flower essence, which happen to be brandy based. QED for the Doc. - Hic!!

Teatime teaser: RICHZOOS -> CHORIZOS

Round 6: M E R D O E H P I

C1: HOMIER (6)
C2: PRIMED (6)
DC: HEIRDOM (7)
OT: HEMIPODE (8)
Score: 36–28 (max 47)

Round 7: U G E R D O M N E

C1: GUERDON (7)

OT: MODERNE (7) MOURNED (7)
Score: 43–28 (max 54)
Ryan restores his lead with a great spot.

Round 8: Z N A B S O E J G

C1: NOSEBAG (7)
C2: BANJOS (6)
DC: GAZEBOS (7)
OT: BANJOES (7)
Score: 50–28 (max 61)
Another good spot, which should put this one in the bag for Ryan.
After BRAISE, NOSEBA and CHORIZOS, I'm starting to feel a bit peckish.

Round 9: O N A E M L U C N

C1: COLUMN (6)
C2: COLUMN (6)
DC: UNCLEAN (7)
OT: NOUMENAL (8)
Score: 56–34 (max 69)

Susie tells us about the origins of medical terms PLACEBO, PANACEA, MALARIA and MUMPS, in honour of the Dr.

Round 10: 9, 8, 1, 3, 7, 25. Target: 919.

C1: 917. ((9+1)x3)+7=37x25-8 (7)
C2: 915.
RR: 919. ((3+8)x7)=77+25=102x9=918+1 (10)
Score: 63–34 (max 79)
A good spot by Ryan to get to 917 and this is followed by a stunning solution by Rachel to nail a very tricky numbers game.
She has reached an impressive standard very quickly.

Teatime teaser: LUNGFISH -> FLUSHING

Round 11: I S O A P Q E D S

C1: soapies
C2: DISPOSE (7)
DC: ADIPOSE (7)

C1: DAIKON (6)
C2: ORDAIN (6)
OT: ANORAK (6) INDOOR (6) INROAD (6) KROONI (6) NARDOO (6) RADIAN (6)
Score: 69–54 (max 99)

Round 14: 4, 5, 3, 8, 6, 2. Target: 442.

C1: 443. 6x8=48-4=44x5x2=440+3 (7)
C2: 445.
OT: 442. (8+5) = 13 x ((3+2)x6+4)
Score: 76–54 (max 109)
A great spot by Ryan to get within one of 442 on this very hard numbers round, especially as it was my solution too :D
That is also game, set and match to Ryan.

Round 15: L U T O N H A G S

No one buzzes. The answer was ONSLAUGHT.
Score: 76–54 (max 119)
Ryan misses out on the Conundrum but wins quite comfortably in the end, on a low scoring day. I am sure he will benefit from this and come back stronger next week. Well done mate!

I think 442 is possible according to the spoilers thread.

I don't think it was - what else would the past tense of the verb SWOT be if not SWOTTED? "He swotted hard for the exam but still only got a B." Susie did mention that SWOTTER had been disallowed as SWOT is also the noun as well as the verb.
Round 8: Z N A B S O E J G

C1: NOESBAG (7)
C2: BANJOS (6)
DC: GAZEBOS (7)
OT: BANJOES (7) NOSEBAG (7)
NOSEBAG was actually what Ryan declared.
