Countdown Special - Monday August 30th 2004

Post by James Robinson »

Since Kai has been generous enough to give me his Wednesday recap slot on trial, I'd thought I'd warm up by recapping my special show from 2004. It seemed a bit odd that it didn't have a page on the forum, yet it had one on CDB and on the wiki page, but what can you do?

Countdown Special recap for Monday 30 August 2004.

C1: Challenger Lucy Guile. 15-year-old student studying at Leeds Girls' Grammar School. Lost to Sheila Furse in October 2002 by score of 70-68.

DC: Alison Heard and Bob "The Cat" Bevan.
CV: Carol Vorderman.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: R T S A O A A C V

C1: ACTORS (6)
C2: CAVORTS (7)
DC: AORTAS (6)
OT: AVATARS (7) CRAVATS (7) OSTRACA (7)
Score: 0–7 (max 7)

Round 2: L L E A E H S N M

C1: LEASH (5)
C2: ENAMEL (6)
DC: ENAMELS (7)
OT: MALLEES (7)
Score: 0–13 (max 14)

Yet again I forget to add the S to my word to increase my score. That happened in my first show, oddly enough in the second round as well, when I could have had PEOPLES and stuck with PEOPLE.

Round 3: T R C P O E E X G

C1: EXPORT (6)
C2: EXPECT (6)
DC: EXCEPT (6) PROTEGE (7) CORTEGE (7)
OT: EXCERPT (7)
Score: 6–19 (max 21)

Round 4: T W R S I A E C F

C1: FAIREST (7)
C2: SCREW (5)
DC: WAITERS (7)
OT: CRISTAE (7) RACIEST (7) FIACRES (7) FRETSAW (7) SWIFTER (7) WARIEST (7)
Score: 13–19 (max 28)

Lucy pulls back nicely as I bomb on a few simple sevens.

Round 5: 100, 25, 5, 1, 4, 7. Target: 385.

C1: 386. Mistake in working.
C2: 386. (4 x 100) - 25 + 7 + 5 - 1 (7)
CV: 385. ((100 - 25) + 7 - 5) x (4 + 1) (10)
Score: 13–26 (max 38)

I get back in as Lucy makes a mistake on her numbers.

Bob tells a story about how he acquired his "The Cat" in his name.

Teatime teaser: OLDPACK -> PADLOCK

Round 6: A I A M P B T E N

C1: BEAT (4)
C2: ANIMATE (7)
DC: AMBIENT (7)
OT: IMPANATE (8)
Score: 13–33 (max 46)

Round 7: T D P O U E F S A

C1: SPOUTED (7)
C2: SPOUTED (7)
DC: OUTSPED (7)
OT: UPDATES (7)
Score: 20–40 (max 53)

Round 8: S P L D K I E O L

C1: SPILLED (7)
C2: SKILLED (7)
DC: DESPOIL (7) SPOILED (7) DOLLIES (7)
OT: DESKILL (7) DIPOLES (7) KELOIDS (7) POLLIES (7)
Score: 27–47 (max 60)

A plethora of sevens keeps the gap at 20 points.

Round 9: R E U I G M S B S

C1: IMBUES (6)
C2: BRUISES (7)
DC: SURMISE (7)
OT: BURGESS (7) GIBUSES (7) GUISERS (7) IMBRUES (7) MISUSER (7) SIMURGS (7)
Score: 27–54 (max 67)

My score is now double that of Lucy's as I employ the "K" formation for my first numbers game.

Round 10: 9, 6, 4, 1, 9, 1. Target: 771.

C1: -
C2: 779. (((9 + 4) x 6) x (9 + 1)) - 1 (5)
CV: 770. (((9 + 4) x 6) -1) x (9 + 1) (7)
Score: 27–59 (max 74)

A slight alteration could have got me an extra 2 points, but it's an impossible one. Carol declares my choice as a complete stinker and says it was not O-"K".

Teatime teaser: DRYTOES -> DESTROY

Round 11: D T R N O A I H M

C1: ADROIT (6)
C2: TRAIN (5)
DC: DORMANT (7)
OT: MORDANT (7)
Score: 33–59 (max 81)

Round 12: Z E O D R E C D L

C1: COLDER (6)
C2: CODE (4)
DC: DECODER (7) CODDLER (7)
OT: RECODED (7)
Score: 39–59 (max 88)

I start to head into freefall as my lead is cut back to 20 points.

Round 13: N R Y T U O I E N

C1: TOURNEY (7)
C2: ROUTINE (7)
OT: NEUTRINO (8)
Score: 46–66 (max 96)

A close game could still yet be decided by the conundrum, but I deploy my "C" formation numbers...

Round 14: 100, 75, 9, 2, 3, 5. Target: 667.

C1: 667. (75 x 9) - 5 - 3 (10)
C2: 667. (75 x 9) - 5 - 3 (10)
Score: 56–76 (max 106)

...which results in a simple round, which gives me the game.

Round 15: L E E D S T U R F

C1 buzzes on 3 seconds to say FLUSTERED which is correct.
Score: 66–76 (max 116)

Lucy gives the score more respectability with the conundrum, but I win the game by 10 points. Cue joyous lifting of arms in air. :D

It was a very enjoyable game. Oddly enough I never got a teapot for winning that game, so I had to wait nearly 6 years to get my teapot :!:
