Countdown recap for Tuesday 22 September 2009

...OR... as it will officially be called

Larsen's 23rd birthday Countdown spectacular! In honour of this historic day the number 25 tile has been replaced with 23. Lets hope it doesn't come out in conjunction with our new yet elusive addition to the numbers board "The skinny 5" otherwise the world might implode!

C1: Champion Jeffrey Burgin (4 wins, 336 points.)
C2: Challenger Mhairi Cameron (pronounced VOWRY???) a vet from Edinburgh. She does overseas work for an animal charity and was recently in the Bolivian jungle. Her boyfriend is Tom Jones, but not that one. As Jason would say she is definitely a fireball hottie.
DC: Susie Dent and Colin "I heart Kirk" Murray.
RR: Rachel Riley, who is looking as radiant and gorgeous as ever in another eye-popping yet reasonably priced dress. Not only that but she is the kindest, most caring sweetheart I have ever met. She has a warmth that envelopes you whole and makes the world a better place. I just want to hold her til the pain goes away!!!
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: L G N E A U J I L
R02: S H E I Y C T A G
R03: S D R U I E V T N
R04: C W E O F T K U N
R05: 50, 100, 75, 7, 4, 9. Target: 723.
TTT: TOKENBAN - "Think number 10, think Brown..."
R06: S G S I A T S E T
R07: N R P O A I S S L
R08: D Q E O R N E I D
R09: T R X O I O D N L
R10: 50, 4, 5, 7, 10, 2. Target: 345.
TTT: SURESORT - "Its absolutely pants this clue."
R11: N B T E O E R M M
R12: T P O A N D I A P
R13: H S R E O A R B L
R14: 2, 7, 10, 4, 5, 3. Target: 464.
R15: A M T E E Z I N G (conundrum)

I've not been able to watch much Countdown this week due to the fact that I'm the sole person on here with a job. But from what I gather, Jeffrey is already a half-octochamp (surely this makes no sense and will never catch on) but is scoring slightly under parr for octochamp material. Today sees him face Mhairi Cameron and rumour has it this will be a strongly contested game. This isn't a spoiler. I don't even know the outcome of this game as I've been too busy with my forementioned JOB. I didn't even manage to start all the spoiler threads this week and I haven't been to the studios in almost 2 days!

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Enjoy the show (you lazy scrounging dole warriors)

Round 1: L G N E A U J I L

C1: JUNGLE (6)
C2: JUNGLE (6)
DC: LINGUAL (7) JELLING (7) Not to be confused with jelqing
OT: LIGULAE (7) NIGELLA (7)
Score: 6–6 (max 7)

NIGELLA is a plant and LIGULAE is the plural of ligula which has many web definitions, none of which I understand!

Round 2: S H E I Y C T A G

C1: CHASTE (6)
C2: CAGIEST (7)
DC: ITCHES (6) AITCHES (7)
OT: YACHTIES (8)
Score: 6–13 (max 15)

Mhairi takes the lead which is nice I suppose because she's very attractive. YACHTY describes anything related to yachts or is another term for a yachtsman or yachtswoman. Jeez that word looks weird. Try saying it many times. It will eventually lose all meaning!

Round 3: S D R U I E V T N

C1: INTRUDES (8)
C2: STRIVED (7)
OT: NURDIEST (8) UNRIVETS (8) VENTURIS (8)
Score: 14–13 (max 23)

Round 4: C W E O F T K U N

C1: COUNT (5)
C2: COUNT (5)
DC: CONFUTE (7)
Score: 19–18 (max 30)

Jeffrey misses CONFUTE for the second time in his run!

Round 5: 50, 100, 75, 7, 4, 9. Target: 723.

C1: 725.
C2: 722. 75x9+50+4-7 (7)
RR: 1 away unexplained (7)
OT: 723. (100-7x4)x9+75 (10)
Score: 19–25 (max 40)

Teatime teaser: TOKENBAN -> BANKNOTE

Round 6: S G S I A T S E T

C1: GASSIEST (8)
C2: GASSIEST (8)
DC: GASSIEST (8)
OT: STAGIEST (8)
Score: 27–33 (max 48)

Round 7: N R P O A I S S L

C1: SPRAINS (7)
C2: PASSION (7)
DC: PRISONS (7) PARSONS (7) PARISONS (8)
Score: 34–40 (max 56)

Round 8: D Q E O R N E I D

C1: noddier
C2: DENIED (6)
DC: REDONE (6)
OT: INDEED (6) DENIER (6) NEREID (6) REINED (6) DERIDE (6) DINERO (6) IRONED (6) DRONED (6) ERODED (6) REDDEN (6) RIDDEN (6) RINDED (6)
Score: 34–46 (max 62)

A punt from Jeffrey here, as he says he was sure his opponent would yield a 7. Alas 6 was the very max and Mhairi extends her lead to 12.

Round 9: T R X O I O D N L

C1: LOTION (6)
C2: LOTION (6)
DC: LOTION (6)
OT: INDOOR (6) NITROX (6) TOROID (6) TOXOID (6)
Score: 40–52 (max 68)

NITROX is a gas mixture of nitrogen and oxygen used in scuba diving.

Round 10: 50, 4, 5, 7, 10, 2. Target: 345.

C1: 345. 50x7-5 (10)
C2: 345. 50x7-5 (10)
Score: 50–62 (max 78)

Teatime teaser: SURESORT -> TROUSERS

Round 11: N B T E O E R M M

C1: entomber
C2: torment
DC: METEOR (6)
OT: MEMENTO (7)
Score: 50–62 (max 85)

Mhairi's declaration of 7 forces Jeffrey to risk a dodgy agent noun. It turns out both were invalid as Mhairi had used a phantom letter. According to Jeffrey Mhairi had MEMENTO written down but didn't want to risk the embarrassment of mispronouncing it! Oh the irony!

Round 12: T P O A N D I A P

C1: ADAPTION (8)
C2: PANDA (5)
OT: APPOINT (7) is the only 7
Score: 58–62 (max 93)

Jeffrey claws back within striking distance and is awarded a baseball cap for his efforts.

Round 13: H S R E O A R B L

C1: BRASHER (7)
C2: BRASHER (7)
DC: BASHER (6)
OT: BARRELS (7) HERBALS (7) HOARSER (7) SOLEBAR (7)
Score: 65–69 (max 100)

Round 14: 2, 7, 10, 4, 5, 3. Target: 464.

C1: 465. Mistake in working.
C2: 457. (7+2)x5x10+4+3 (5)
RR: 1 away unexplained (7)
OT: 464. ((10+3)x5-7)x4x2 (10) (Rachel after the conundrum)
Score: 65–74 (max 110)

For a moment Jeffrey looks inconsolable thinking his opponent has taken the game before realizing she is more than 5 away and it remains crucial!

Round 15: A M T E E Z I N G

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say MAGNETIZE which is correct.
Score: 75–74 (max 120)

What an epic game! Jeffrey looks ecstatic after capturing victory from the clutches of defeat. It could have very easily gone either way and if Mhairi had declared TORMENT or did +4x3 instead of +4+3 in the last round, the game would have been hers. Watch Jeffrey battle for triquartoctochampdom tomorrow.

Dinos, in Scots Gaelic, "mh" is pronounced like a V, so Mhairi is effectively anglicised as "Varry".

And what does Rachel think about this? If I were her I'd probably be thinking "restraining order".

I was going to say I don't think she feels the same way, but she still remembers me from when I did my show, although I think she has forgotten my name which isn't too surprising, considering I only won 2 shows, but there you go.

You should try hugging Jeff, he's really quite sensual.

PS It's considered quite unusual to hug someone who doesn't want to be hugged.

Yeah, well I don't just up to her and say "Hi, Rachel, it's me, James, the fat guy who won 2 shows in that recording back in March."

Somehow, I don't think that would work.

I meant she probably recognises you because she's seen your face at lots of the recordings, but as you don't speak to her that's why she doesn't remember your name.

I actually speak to her all the time, Jeffrey. We have very good conversations.

Last time, we discussed who might win the series. Interestingly enough, your name wasn't mentioned.

I hope you're not including me in that, Kieran, seeing as you always wait for me to post before saying anything.

I was just trying to lighten the tension a bit by asking James something silly. Dinos's recap was brilliant, but seeing as it heavily featured recent Jamesisms there is no real surprise that he is also featured in the responses.

My bad, the way you phrased your original post sounded as if you didn't talk to her. I think you've mistaken 'interesting' for 'no-one gives a shit' again- I'm not surprised my name wasn't mentioned, seeing as how we already have in the quarter-finals Chris Davies (Apterous rank, #2), Innis Carson (Apterous rank, #8), Andrew Hulme (Apterous rank, #9), in all probability Oliver Garner (Apterous rank, #30) and then little old me waaay down there in Apterous rank, #123. That, and the fact I do have ONE OF THE WORST OCTOCHAMP SCORES IN COUNTDOWN HISTORY.

I was just saying that I was surprised that you weren't mentioned, seeing as the last time I saw Rachel was after the recordings of next week's shows, so that was just 2 days after your last recordings.

But as you were talking about people who would probably win the series, I'm not surprised my name wasn't mentioned. Yes, I made Octochampdom, but I wouldn't expect my name to come up. Out of interest, which names came up? Because if it was Hulme, Davies and Carson, that proves my point.

I wasn't suggesting she did, but I'm saying that Hulme, Davies, Carson and once he goes on Garner are all far better than me (reflected in the rankings) and that their higher ability means they are more likely to come up in conversation about potential series winners.

Is that to get it all out of your system before you get doused in milk and flour and hung upside out of a third floor college window as a new fresher at Oxford? :D

Well, yes, she did ask who I thought would win the series and I said Chris, but definitely not ruling out Andrew & Innis. I was even throw Bob's name into the ring, since he was a bit unlucky against you.

I'd like to point the reason I said Chris is because I've actually beaten the other 2 on Apterous, whereas Chris has stuffed on both occasions, so far.

P.S. If Bob is reading this, I'd quite like to play you at some point. :D

Did she mention any names then? Because it sounds from that as if you were the only one suggesting, although I may be wrong.

But this proves my point that I probably wouldn't be mentioned in a conversation about potential series winners. Using a football analogy, it's the equivalent of Liverpool (Davies), Tottenham (Carson), West Ham (Hulme), Bristol City (Garner), Crystal Palace (De Caux) and Welling (me!) being in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Even if Welling had done well to reach the quarter-finals, albeit in less than impressive fashion with one of the worst runs in FA Cup history, I very much doubt you'd back them in a conversation about the potential winner of the FA Cup.

Davies has an annoying accent, one part of him should be in jail for assault, and he's managed by someone who looks like a fat Spanish waiter. :D

I'd like to point out that I've managed to enjoy both aspects to this recap thread.

Oh but Dinos, in your 'final thoughts' you put TORMENT when you meant MEMENTO. Tard.

Let's say I started the ball rolling with Chris and then Rachel mentioned Andrew & Innis, before I mentioned Bob. She definitely seemed undecided on who she thought was the best though.

Having said that, I think we all are undecided on who is going to win this, especially if Oliver comes in before the end of the series.

I'm still optimistic that they'll let you have a fourth shot before the end of the series, since you're always in the studio anyway.

Not sure what good it would do. With the calibre of Chris, Innis, Andrew, Jeff, Bob & maybe Oliver I've got little to no chance anyway.

So are you Charlie. So. Are. You. *Playful punch round chin*

Quarter-finals could be shaping up to be very interesting, we've got some bona-fide uber-players in Andrew 'The Machine' Hulme, Chris 'The Magician' Davies, Innis 'The Assassin' Carson and in all probability Oliver 'The Wunda Kid' Garner, then some potential dangerous draws in Bob 'The Joker' De Caux, Paul 'The Wildcard' Varlaam, Jacqui 'The Fox' Baker and me, Jeffrey 'Mr. Showbiz' Burgin. Who knows who else might force their way into those top 8 seeds as well?

P.S. I spent ages thinking up nicknames, I might do a little promo video when quarters are confirmed like they do for boxing or something. My idea for darts-style entrances is also still on the table, Damian. ;)

Aw c'mon! C'mon!

I can see it now, Dudley booming away, "And now...entering the arena...give it up, ladies and gentlemen...for...Mr. Showbiz himself, Jeffrey Burgin!"

Cue laserz and smoke and me walking out to the tune from Fame doing jazz hands (my signature tune has changed with the change in nickname). Then if anyone gets a 9 we play the theme tune whenever some gets a 180 in darts, complete with the chants of 'oi, oi, oi!'.

Magic. :P

I'm thinking as well a late night version of Countdown, like Hollyoaks After Dark. Basically Strip Countdown, with Dictionary Corner and Rachel on the numbers playing along as well. Brings a whole new meaning to finding a hard nine in under 30 seconds, I guess.

I think this has annihilated the record for the most posts on a recap.

Good spot Kirk, that's quite the likeness. :)
Although I expect most sports have a goateed short-haired slightly-chubby-around-the-belly kinda guy in their ranks.
