Apterous Summer Open Week 3

Post by Andrew Feist »

I have the U1000 and U800 ready to go:
U1000:
Andy Wilson 2-1 Ian Dent
Julie Russell 1-2 Liam Tiernan
James Hall 2-0 Jason Turner
James Levison 0-2 Niall Seymour
Phil Collinge - Shaun Hegarty

U800:
James Leroux 2-0 Supee Juachan
Ben Ziek - Steve Rogers
Adam Dexter - Ian Dent
Maxine Silkstone 2-1 Gregor Morgan
(Steve Rogers - Gregor Morgan)
(Adam Dexter - James Leroux)

This is the last chance for the extra U800 games, as starting next week will be crossover games based on where you finish in the pool. (The top two from one pool will play the top two from the other pool, and same for the bottom.)

What an awesome set of three games:

Kirk Bevins 2 - 1 David O'Donnell

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87503
14 maximums to go 1-0 up.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87511
14 maximums out of 14 each. Both on for a perfect game. Both fluff the conundrum. Another conundrum is needed to separate us.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87524
David is on a perfect game with 14/14 and my 4 large tactic meant I only had 13/14 maxes. I got the conundrum to deny DOD a max game and take the match.

Awesome set of games mate.

Enjoyed them, Kirk. I suppose a lot of the rounds were quite flat but I find it hard to be that consistent so was really pleased with them. 14 maxima aren't enough to beat Kirk: bloody hell!

Game 1 - http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87820

Started well, outwording Junaid twice in first few rounds. Well aware that his maths means if i am to win, i need to beat him on the letters games. Junaid takes 10 pts in first numbers, then whacks me with a left-hook in Rd 11, which sends me reeling. I bounce back with a body-blow in Rd 13, leaving us heading for the crucial Conundrum. Junaid buzzes in pretty quick, while all the time i'm thinking to myself, "I know this word, i've seen it somewhere before". Junaid makes an error and i spot the word, which would have been crazy to miss. One nil to me, game on Junaid !!

Game 2 - http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87827

Good start for both again, and predictably Junaid does me on the first maths game. Thought i had him with Rd 6 spot, but he matched it and its always kind of deflating when that happens. Another blow for me follows immediately when i am beaten with an 8. On the ropes now, maths games looming, need to claw back. Get the breakthrough in Rd 11, game on again - and with Rd 13 i again thought i had him, but we play snap once more and the crucial looms. 10 behind with conundrum to play, i need 2 out of 2 to win, a big ask but very possible.....however it wasn't to be......Junaid did a number on me with this round, in more ways than one.

Game 3 - The Decider http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87833

Lost my rag in Rd 1, missing a pretty obvious 8, when u look at the way the letters came out. Never really recovered from it. Ended round early in Rd 3, then spotted the 7, so had to wait to see if it would prove costly, which it obviously did. Reeling badly now, and the game is over by the end of part 1. Nothing exciting to mention after this, i just went through the motions and played out the game.

Congratulations to Junaid. Great battles to begin with, shame the 3rd game wasn't as competitive.

Henry Meier 2 - 1 Tom Rowell

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87859
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=87862

Three nerve-racking games. Well played Tom, unlucky.

and my games against Shaun, a 2-1 defeat for me, well done Shaun. To be honest i'm happy enough to have finally pushed a match to a third game in both sections.

highlight was the possible 9 plastique in round 7 of the last game which is pretty much where the match began to slip away from me when Joseph Pilates let me down.

Two very good games, especially the second where Neil proved to be on unstoppable form in the letters, both of us getting some very good words in the middle section especially.

U1200 vs Jay Murphy:

Mark 79-60 Jay
A topsy-turvy one - a bad miss from me on a 6-small in round 9 puts Jay back on level terms, and not risking UNBEND for 6 in round 13 was unbelievably stupid on my part, tactically as well as lexicographically. However, Jay got really unlucky on the conundrum when his poker game popped up in front of the window as he was typing it in :(

Mark 84-71 Jay
A tricky 6-small spot in round 14 saves me from a crucial to cap off a tense game in which Jay always had me within reaching distance.

Open games between Niall Seymour and Julie Taylor:

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=90036 Niall 80-96 Julie

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=90044 Julie 87-53 Niall

A very close first game, with a crucial conundrum. Niall had an unlucky start to the second game, but rallied well.
Choosing 4 large numbers is obviously a good way to beat me on the numbers rounds! I must practice those.

Well played, Niall, great games, but 2-0 to me in the end.

A bit of a late result between Jeff Clayton and myself (U1200):

Jeff Clayton 107 - 80 Simon Myers
Despite me getting two nines, more consistent play from Jeff sealed it.

Jeff Clayton 81 - 96 Simon Myers
Another nine and a crucial conundrum spot pushes a close tie to a decider.

Jeff Clayton 84 - 74 Simon Myers
Played one day later, a tense game with some great spots and difficult rounds. Jeff's connection goes bad at the last numbers, and as a gentlemen's agreement we decide that, since I got the conundrum we will play a separate tie-break, which Jeff got on 29.4s.

Late result in the U1000.

Shaun Hegarty 2-1 Phil Collinge

87-62 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=90744
87-92 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=91303
87-77 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=91314

The 2nd game was lost at 54-49 after 9 rounds so the game shown above was started in earnest at Round 10 with Shaun maintaining a 5 point lead.

I know Andrew has this result already but posting in order that a record exists on the forum.

Late results from Week 3:

Innis Carson 2 - 0 Matt Morrison
98 - 75 and 108 - 58

No surprise at the result but I did better than the 120-60-ish scorelines I predicted, thanks to pretty flat rounds and only one 9 available over both games.
