Only the subject of non-specific bugs, I've been having trouble this evening, the site appear to be hanging. I checked my connection, and my upload speed seems to be pretty slow (0.27MB/s). Would this affect the functioning of the site?

Eh probably not, it should still work eventually.

I am not the most technically minded but I no longer seem to be able to log in on my home connection any more. Just cycles through the 500 attempts and then says something about connection reset.

I have no problem with the same laptop at work though.

Any ideas? It used to be fine - just a problem in the last month or so.

Do this. Preferably after a few attempts rather than 500, unless you want to send me a very long email...

Eh probably not, it should still work eventually.
Seems that the problem is at my end, I'm having long periods of pathetically slow data transfer. Possibly even more annoying than our neighbours.

Just done the junior conundrum duel and after getting one wrong I expected the duellist to take 0.1 seconds and give GANDISEEG as an answer but it didn't - it carried on to the end of the time. I assume it's because it's junior and not standard but I guess this was overlooked?

How long are conundrums meant to last in goatblitz? Are they meant to be 10 seconds total, with the final letter appearing after about 6 seconds? Or 15 seconds total with the letter appearing after 10? I always assumed it was the former, but recently it seems to be the latter. Have things changed, or am I imagining things?

I've had a look on through this thread and couldn't really find anything that can help, so here is the error report below. I log in, then try to play but when it opens /game.php it can't log in.

Looks like you have some firewall or other security restriction preventing the program from contacting Apterous HQ to log you in. Here's something to try which at least one other person has had some success with, please let me know if it works for you:-

1) Close all windows of your Internet browser.
2) Open Notepad (in Windows XP, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.)
3) In Notepad, go to File, then Open.
4) Browse to C:\Program Files\Java\jre\lib\security. If you can't find this folder, try looking for the same folder in other drives.
5) In the "File name" box, type "java.policy". Note that you may not be able to see this file, but it should open normally if you type in the name.
6) A file containing a few lines of junk should now open. Copy and paste the following text to the bottom of it:

grant {
permission java.net.SocketPermission "apterous.org:1-65535", "connect,resolve";
permission java.net.SocketPermission "www.apterous.org:1-65535", "connect,resolve";
permission java.net.SocketPermission "78.143.212.226:1-65535", "connect,resolve";
};

7) Save the file and close Notepad, then restart your Internet browser and attempt to connect to Apterous. Hopefully it should work! Please let me know if it does, or indeed if it doesn't.

When I was doing a conundrum attack with CSW a couple of times a 10 letter scramble came up (the answer was still 9 letters). The conundrums also have multiple answers, although I'm not bothered about that.

All of a sudden I'm at level 0 on everything again, and I need 0 more XP to get to the next level.... (more specifically, that's what it says in the in-game report thing; the web site seems to be fine.)

Half right. It is indeed a bona fide genuine word which has been allowed on Countdown in the past, but bizarrely it's been omitted from ODE2r, so it's not currently valid on the show and it's not a bug for apterous to disallow it.

Drat and darnation. My electronic COED says it's a noun, and the big book says it's a mass noun. Hurrah for Lexplorer being right, and poot for losing and not even being able to feel there was mitigation! :roll:

Was looking at a few peoples Daily Duels for yesterday (22nd June 2009) and noticed that we don't get the same selection of letters, which is the whole point right? Seems the conundrums are the same but the standard letter rounds vary.

e.g.

Kai's duel: http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=80056
Rob's duel: http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=79824

I looked a bit harder and noticed some weirdy similarities in the selections. Check out Kai's rounds 1,13 and 14 and compare to Rob's rounds 12, 1 and 2 respectively - the consonants are the same but the vowels change.

I wasn't given a benjamin when I got 101 against James Hurrell. More precisely, a Benjamin didn't show up in the tabs for Overall - the last thing received was a queen of diamonds in round 12.

Big crash and when I logged back in I had 2 duels in my challenge window, one of which was waiting for BOTH players!
I played the first, and then just ran through the second with zeroes, just to get rid of it out of my challenge window.
Apparently I wasn't the only one.

Just a minor thing. I got a 4 of diamonds in the overall section of the tab but in the in-game chat window it said I had a 6 of diamonds, a queen of diamonds and 4 baseball caps. It omitted to tell me that I had a 4 of diamonds. Sad times.

If one adjourns a classic game, upon resumption the letters play out from the beginning again (so an adjournment after round one means round two will have the same selection once the game is resumed).

Not sure if this is a bug, or something wrong with my PC ...

A couple of times recently, I've had perfectly good conundrum solutions rejected for no apparent reason:

You're pressing space before you type the answer. Don't do that.

It shouldn't really be possible to press space, so I do need to fix that, but you can work around it for now.

Are all the bots knackered on Unlimited at the moment? I know Rex and Prime are, and Velvet also seems to be, but Waldorf seems fine. Bit difficult to tell with Prune, he plays like that most of the time anyway.

On your update report it says 9th April not 9th July. I'm not sure what the 1000 miles are referring to -- possibly skills?

Three rounds into a game against Keith Williams, my Apterous 'stuttered' and I had to force Firefox to close altogether to reclaim use of my computer. Alas, no code for that but then upon restarting the same game from the same point, clicking the button which would normally have launched the letters selection window had no effect, but remained depressed. The last few lines from the Error Tracker were:

A mundane and somewhat unimportant bug: the maxes for games with tie-break conundrums are misrecorded, with each additional conundrum adding 10 points to the max when in reality this would be impossible to achieve, due to the fact that solving the first or second conundrum would see the game end. For example:

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=80690

The max is listed as 189, whereas in reality it would be impossible to score more than 149 (I think).

This has been discussed before, and it's not really a bug, it just depends what you think the max is supposed to represent. Imagine that the TB conundrum didn't change the max. Then say two players got 14 maxes, both missed the conundrum, and then one of them got the tiebreaker. That player's score would then be equal to the max, but it's not really a max game, and that's a little weird.

OK, this one might actually be a bug: in a 110-0 game against Apterous Prune where I scored in every round I was told that I had achieved a prune on a stick. Instead, I was (rightly) awarded a holy prune.

The Holy items aren't for beating the bots to nil as far as I can remember, unless this is what you need to do for Prune to get one, and I'm sure it's not.

OK, well at any rate I think I was awarded something different to what I was told I was rewarded.
