Spoilers for Friday 12 June [Series 60 2nd QF]

Post by Philip Jarvis »

Day 2 of the contest sees smiling Cate Henderson,
To achieve a win today very much depends upon,
Whether she can manage to maintain her early promise,
But the answer that we all really want to know is,
Did Cate really engender fun, with lacy black suspenders on?

Good old Hamish Williamson, now there’s a wily Scot,
He burst onto the scene in April, to win his new teapot,
With a giant debut score, that had never been seen before,
He posted a record total, of one hundred and thirty four,
A nine today may be difficult to spot, but I’m sure he’ll give it his very best shot.

I'm about 90% as excited as I was yesterday. I hope someone is keeping detailed records of this.

I would have liked to see Julie vs Cate - I wouldn't like to go home to any of them with a pound short in my wages.

Hamish is starting to annoy me now. I so want him to win and he's going to throw it away on phantom letters and numbers which I'm sure has to be considered inexcusable for a series final.

alternate 2nd numbers:

75 + 8 - 3 = 80
80 x 9 = 720, + 3 = 723

I see the 2nd Tea Time Teaser was SHELLING.

Shame Jeff didn't read out this limerick:

There was an old gardener called Stelling,
Whose peas were just ripe for shelling,
He went down to the Village Show,
And won first prize for his giant marrow,
Now it’s his head, and not his veg that’s swelling.

When Hamish got his 2nd numbers wrong by using the 3 too often he could have done:-
(75-3)*(9+8-7)+3
I see Hamish as a dark horse to win (but i hope I am wrong Kirk before you kill me :D )
I did get fractious but missed portioned.

I missed fractious in the audience (had never heard of it) but got portioned.

I'm surprised Mr Phil Reynolds didn't pick up on Jeff's mistake on opening when he said the word CATCHED^ instead of CAUGHT and then when Susie tried spelling EJECTA she spelt it EGECTA. Phil, you're slipping.

I don't know where people get this idea that my mission in life is to spot and point out every mistake everyone else makes or to set myself up as some kind of paragon of perfection. Genuine typos/slips of the tongue I practically never draw attention to, unless they're amusing. I occasionally pick people up in a handful of cases, either where I think a particularly egregious solecism is being perpetuated, or in the interests of the accuracy of a permanent record (as with the recaps).

I did notice that Susie said G instead of J but I thought it was pretty obvious what she meant as there was no G in the selection. I didn't notice Jeff's slip at the beginning, but I was making a sandwich during the intros so wasn't entirely concentrating.

Did anyone else think that Rachel's description of pi was terrible? All she had to say was that it's the length of the circumference of a circle divided by the diameter. If you want to say other stuff in addition to that, fair enough but instead?! No-one watching that who didn't already know what pi was would be any the wiser.

Is the UK's education system so abysmal that there are people who know there is a number called pi but do not know that it is the circle ratio? She would have done better to have described it as a transcendental number, rather than an irrational, but my guess is that she was merely told to be arcane enough that Jeff could pretend not to understand. I think it is a mistake to assume that she writes her own lines and is responsible for their content.

Using the circle ratio to define pi is an incidental aspect of its properties.

Using the Euler identity, we have pi = ln(-1)/sqrt(-1). :ugeek:

Get in Hamish, a bit erratic but undeniably brilliant, going to be a serious test of my c4c loyalties if Jimmy gets through to play him. Think Cate will be disapointed though, definitely capable of much better.

Rachel was asked specifically to give some mumbo-jumbo that no one would understand as part of the joke. I remember thinking as I watched it happen, "I bet Gevin complains about this." Good to see that your reputation as a whining git is not undeserved.

Definitely. It was the last game to be filmed that day and when I spoke to her afterwards she said she'd had a rough day and was tired.Take nothing away from Hamish though, he was a bit hit-and-miss but produced the goods in the end.

The morning after the finals, Cate was sitting a couple of tables away from me in the hotel dining room having breakfast. When Hamish came in, she called over to him with a cheery good morning and invited him to join her, so there were evidently no hard feelings. (Not unless she took the opportunity to slip Ex-Lax into his porridge, anyway.)

Rachel is a funny girl in a funny friend kind of way. She is not a natural gag-teller. But. Its infinite variety + its variance of delivery = what makes humour such fun.
Living life in a gyratory circus kind of way.
