Big day today in the Riley household - Rachel notches up her fiftieth Countdown appearance (naturally this applies to Jeff as well) and little brother Alex hits 21. Champion Cate is onto her fourth show now, and is looking a good bet to become that rare thing, a female octochamp. Very solid all round game (letters slightly better than numbers maybe) and it's certainly gonna take a good'un to stop her. She's a retired probation officer from Portland. In Dorset? Yes, that's right. So is today's challenger, Gerald Conley, up to the task? He's a retired lecturer from Braintree in Essex, married with 2 kids who enjoys chess, bridge, golf, cricket and classical music.
Also making his debut today is Jon Gaunt, who I know very little about. He's a Sun columnist apparently, which doesn't inspire confidence. Oh god, he's also just explained that he speaks his mind and just says "what most people are thinking but too scared to say in 'politically correct Britain'".

Regular listeners to the Collings and Herrin podcast will know who "Gaunty" is. There's a snippet at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whqh6SpnGvg
What a cuntish cunty cunt he is.
Sorry Kai.

On a more serious note, does this mean that as extreme right-wingers are now in dictionary corner, we can expect people who are slightly more liberal in their views such as Nick Griffin and Charlie Sargent in a couple of weeks?

Re: Thursday 24th Match 2009 (Series 60, Game 35)
What's weird is that he used to be quite liberal and ran an amazingly good music and comedy venue in Coventry in the early 80s where I spent many a happy night getting drunk and meeting my comedy heroes. It was called the Tic Toc Club, named after the theatre company he also founded and which I was amazed to hear Jeff namecheck today. The name was an acronym for "Theatre In Coventry - Theatre Of Coventry". So now you know.Gary Male wrote:Regular listeners to the Collings and Herrin podcast will know who "Gaunty" is.

Re: Thursday 26th Match 2009 (Series 60, Game 35)
I got in just to catch the last third of this game and was very impressed with Cate's wordplay. Then looked at the scoreboard and was shocked to find she barely notched up a century, and that she scored more points in the final third than the first 2 put together (52-51). Has anyone else ever achieved a similar feat?
