Friday 30th January 2009 (CoC XIII Final)

Post by Joseph Bolas »

After 14 days (or just 3 days if you were in the studio) of some truly nail-biting games, we have now come to the final of the CoC XII, which incidentally may be the last CoC as well. Our two finalists are as follows:

Charlie Reams - Charlie's first game was against Series 58 semi-finalist Peter Davies, where Charlie's spots included PETUNIA, FLAMINGO, AMNIOTE and DESOLATE, to secure him the win. Charlie's QF was aginst Series 59 winner Junaid Mubeen, where Charlie gained an early lead, after spotting CRAZIES and after Junaid brought the score to within 3 points after the seconds number, Charlie spotted BUNGEE and the game eventually went to a crucial conundrum. The conundrum SALESGIRL went unsolved by both champions and Charlie won. Charlie's SF was against series 54 semi-finalist Jon Corby. After the first half, the scores were even, but two 8's (WHISTLED and DOLOMITE) gave Charlie a 16 point lead, from which Jon never came back from. At the end of the match Jon hugged Charlie.

Steve Briers - Steve's first game was against Series 59 Finalist Debbi Flack and after one round secured an 18-0 lead with ANTIPODES. Steve's spot of the conundrum MANGANESE after 25 seconds brought his total to 121, being the higest score so far of the CoC. Steve's QF was against Series 58 winner David O'Donnell, where David tied with Steve for the first 7 rounds, but then a spot by Steve in round 8 of PESTICIDE secured him the lead and the win. His SF was against Series 56 winner Nick Wainwright, where Steve spotted OARFISH, CURABLE and LAZARET to get a 5-point lead over Nick, after a bit of see-sawing game, going into the conundrum. The conundrum VARIFOCAL went unsolved by both champions and Steve secured his place in the Final.

Round 1: P J L N E U O T O

C1: LEPTON (6)

A nice spot here by Steve gives him an opening lead.

OT: COUPLEY (7)
Score: 7–14 (max 14)

OT: 659. ((100 + (8 x (9 - 1)) x 4) + 3 (10)
Score: 26–33 (max 37)

Paul finishes the week with a trick involving Susie and Jeff. Susie reads out instructions to Jeff (who has a packet of playing cards) while Paul twiddles his wand :P

Teatime teaser: DARKMERE -> REMARKED

Round 6: N C R T E A E E A

C1: CATERAN (7)
C2: reenact
OT: CATENAE (7) CRENATE (7)
Score: 33–33 (max 44)

A bit of bad luck for Steve here, as RE-ENACT is hyphenated. Charlie's CATERAN though has brought the game back to a tie :D

C1: GAROTTES (8)
C2: TOASTIER (8)

Score: 49–56 (max 67)

Origin Of Words: Susie combines the topics sport and food and talks about the terms Ham and Egging, Lollipop and Nutmeg.

OT: 831. (50 x (10 + 6)) + 25 + 6 (7)
Score: 49–63 (max 74)

As pointed out in the forum, 831 was the closest you could get and there's only the 1 solution.

Teatime teaser: DARTROPE -> TEARDROP

Round 11: L S N T I O E E E

C1: LENITES (7)
C2: ESTOILE (7)
OT: ENLISTEE (8) SELENITE (8)

C1: -
C2: 869. (7 + 4) x (75 + 4) (7)

OT: 874. (((75 + (9 x 4)) x 4) - 7) x 2 (10)
Score: 67–88 (max 104)

More bad luck today for the contestants as the numbers have been utter bastards. The first and third were solveable and had only 1 solution each and the second numbers you could get only 1 away, again with only 1 solution.

Round 15: E L I T E B O U T

C2 buzzes on 29 seconds to say LIBOUETTE which is incorrect.
C1 buzzes on 29.5 seconds to say GANDISEEG which is of course incorrect but incredibly funny.
The answer was OUBLIETTE.
Score: 67–88 (max 114)

And so ends the CoC XIII with Steve Briers being the winner and Charlie Reams being the runner up (again :(). Well done to both Steve and Charlie for getting to the final :). Well done to Steve for winning and commiserations to Charlie.

This is an old Jimdic error, GOATY is valid but not GOATIER or GOATIEST.

Overall a good recap, thanks for making the extra effort.

If I absolutely HAD to pick a hugger and huggee, I also would have Charlie down as the giver and Jon the taker.

Very minor. 9 + 1 should read 9 - 1.

Great recap, Joseph. :)

Wait - there's more. In the introduction bit, you do a long piece on a "Steve Briers" but if you look at the contestant list underneath, C1 is a "Charlie Reams" and C2 is a "Steven Briers" so I can't find a match.

Oh FFS.
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Actually sorry - I've got a real one. I don't think anyone's mentioned this. It should be 75 + (9 x 4) to get 111.

I've finally caught up and watched the final at last.
Congratulations to Steve and commiserations to Charlie. Our hero pipped at the post in a final again. :(
Great game with some excellent spots.
I got OT contestant equallers, but not maxes, of RAILMEN in round 4 and ONLIEST in round 11.
Shame the numbers rounds were so tricky, it didn't help Charlie there. I was one away on all 3, but sat at home, yada yada....

Let's hope there is another C of C sometime, so Charlie gets another chance.
Sorry, Steve, to sound so one-sided in my support, but we all feel we know Charlie so well! :)
You did brilliantly, Steve, an excellent win. 8-)
