COLIN XXI- Countdown in Lincoln, 24-25 January 2026

Post by Ben Wilson »

As sure as the sun rises in the east, the end of January will see the FOCAL season kick off in Lincoln!

Yep, the event hosted by the man with the same initials as ‘Blackjack’ (and the same physique as Jack Black) is turning 21 this year, and even though the weekend won’t be as big as last (this) year’s triple-header, there’ll still be plenty to keep you busy throughout what is undoubtedly the best weekend of, um, January.

…And this year, there’s a double celebration as FOCAL itself is also turning 10 in 2026! There’ll be plenty of side events and prizes to celebrate both milestones- details of which will be revealed in due course. Both events will, of course, count toward your points total for the 2026 FOCAL season.

As for COLIN itself, the event format is very much a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ With no in-person warm-up event this year, we kick off with the main event on Saturday. As always, everyone will play 3 rounds of ‘three to a table’ Countdown. In each round, every player will play 2 games and host 1 game of 9 round Countdown, so at the end of the day everyone will have played 6 games and hosted 3 games. The top 2 will then play each other in the grand final to determine who will take custody of the coveted COLIN spoon for the next 12 months.

The following day, those who haven’t been Countdowned out (Counted out Down? I dunno) will head to the Memorial Hall for the twelfth Hangover event- the same format as the previous day, only with 2 rounds instead (everyone plays 4 games, hosts 2) before the final. And, of course, there’ll be the team competition at the Hangover, meaning at least 50% of all those who play will leave with at least one prize, and there’ll be plenty of spot prizes available throughout the weekend as well, such as prizes for overachievers, the Tuff Luck award, the Tim Down award, numerous badges to ruin your clothes with and much, much more than I haven’t even thought of yet.

The venues are unchanged from last year- the main event will take place at the Ark on Moor Lane in North Hykeham (directions below) and will kick off at 11:30am, while the Hangover will take place at the Memorial Hall on Newark Road in North Hykeham (directions below again) and will kick off at 10:45am (hopefully).

The price is just £16 for the Saturday, £10 for the Sunday or £22 for both days. Entry into either event will also give you free entry into the side events and online warm-up events- details of which will be made available soon. Payment via Paypal please. :) (Ignore that the link says COLIN XX, didn't realise when I set it up last year that you can't change it)

Directions from the station(s) to the venue(s):

Hykeham Station to the Ark
Hykeham Station to the Memorial Hall

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask- and I hope to see you all in January!

It's COLIN's 21st birthday in January, but did you also know that it's the tenth anniversary of FOCAL as well? :-)

As such, an event like this deserves commemorating somehow, so the prize for the hangover event will be a calendar celebrating the 10 years of FOCAL.

...and that's where I need your help! I want you to send me your best photos from any FOCAL event since 2016, and the best will be used in the calendar! It can be any event, doesn't have to be COLIN, just as long as it captures the spirit of community and competition that our beloved event circuit generates.

Or a photo that makes me laugh. Either will do really. :-)

Updates!

Up to nine entries at the moment so it's slow going for now, but I trust interest will pick up after MK. :) (Milton Keynes, not Mortal Kombat)

An update on the prizes- the above calendar has been scrapped in favour of mugs again. COLIN XXI will have a 'theme' that will be revealed in due time, and the mugs tie in so perfectly that really, I couldn't not. The prizes for the Saturday... will be revealed soon, honest!

Last year as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, I promised a 'COLIN handicap event' to be played on apterous a few days after the event, however the general consensus was that everyone was very much Countdowned out after the weekend, so it got scrapped... or rather, pushed back. If there's interest, I'm thinking of hosting the event on apterous on either January 3rd or January 10th (3 and 2 weeks before COLIN respectively). If you have any preference over the date, comment below and let me know. Medals will be bought and given to the top 3 so if you're planning on playing in the aptoevent, please also enter COLIN XXI. :)

And I'm also still taking/awaiting any submissions for the puzzle mag.

See you all in January!

Added another page to the COLIN stat file! :-) Here's a trivia quiz with no prize:
1. What is the most common winning score at COLIN?
2. What are the most common losing scores? (There are two, tied)
3. What is the only score equally likely to be a winning or losing score, and also the most common score in total?
4. What is the only score between 10 & 79 inclusive that has never been a losing score at COLIN?

Yes, I need to find a better way to spend my Saturday evenings.

Here's the link to the stat file btw- https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/qi1d267b ... 1615x&dl=0

Hey all, entries are a bit slower than I expected at the moment so if you are planning on entering this year and haven't sent me your fee yet, please do so or at least give me a heads up that you're planning on attending so I know how much budget I have to play with. :-) I Hope to have photos of this year's (unique) prizes before Christmas, so trust me, there'll be plenty of FOMO with this one!

And as just an addendum, the latest stat to drop out of COLIN is that the only score- only one- that is more or less equally likely to be a winning or losing score is 52. This is a significant number for this year's COLIN. Why is it significant? All will be revealed soon... :-)

Evening all :-) Hope you had a good festive season 2025 and are looking forward to the start of 2026... and the start of the 2026 FOCAL season at COLIN!

The bad news first: due to the current lack of entrants (and therefore finance) there won't be a puzzle magazine this year- but rest assured, there will be plenty of spot prizes and side games throughout the day to make up for it.

The main prizes available on the Saturday, though, will be the one-of-a-kind, never to be produced again COLIN XXI playing cards, as for one year only- and to keep with the 21 theme- COLIN is going Vegas! Who's going to be the high roller on the day, and who'll end up on skid row? The only way to know for sure is to be there on the day. Sign up now to ensure you have a seat at the (poker) table for the main event of January!

Just two weeks to go! Numbers currently stand at 27 for the main event and 26 for the Hangover so there are plenty of spaces left to fill- I'll take entries up to and including the day before the event, but the earlier I get your entries, the more cash I'll have to splash on prizes and goodies for the weekend. So don't delay- sign up today!

Good point- below are the itineraries for both events. The Hangover is scheduled to* start 15 minutes earlier than usual this year to hopefully prevent any of the travel crunch times people often get.

COLIN XXI Saturday:

10:30 doors open
11:30 introductions
11:50 round 1
13:10 lunch
14:00 round 2
15:20 break
15:35 round 3
16:50 break
17:15 grand final
17:30 prizegiving

The Hangover Sunday:

10:00 doors open
10:45 round 1
12:00 break
12:25 round 2
13:45 final
14:15 prizegiving

*'scheduled to' as for the last 11 years everyone's just rocked up whenever they feel like it and I don't expect things to change, but the draw's going to be done promptly for 10:45am so if you're not sat and playing by then, it's 100% on you.

There's a train out of Hykeham at 14:37 and getting that will save a lot of time relative to the next one so I'm going to aim for that even if it means leaving the prizegiving a bit early. Apologies in advance!

Cool. If other people are getting the train in the London direction, I imagine they would do the same.

Afternoon all :-) As you know, the first round at COLIN is seeded, and the seedings are calculated according to previous performance in the COLIN main event. This hasn't changed this year, but with a whopping 15 people not coming back from last year's triple header, this year's seedings are a little topsy-turvy, so if you're interested in where you'll be lining up on Saturday, either send me a message or comment below if you don't mind advertising your attendance publicly. :-)

As always, new players will be seeded in the middle of the pack in the order in which they signed up.

Just got off the phone with the caretaker of the memorial hall- we will be able to access the social club on Saturday night, but it looks like it'll be the F&H for Friday. I've also had reassurance that the heating will be working this year on Sunday. :-)
