It's hardly a big deal; there's no reason for DC to reel off all the boring maxes anyway. I know they normally do, but I'm not gonna worry about them not doing so in this case, especially considering the word in question.

As for the offence point, most Countdown people I think hear the syllables of CUNTIER being read out and think of it as an amusing word. The cat's arse thing was funny/charming. Hearing the syllables of PACKIES being read out isn't associated with much fun or frivolity to me and I predict the same is true for most people.
Sorry I'm late to this, but yes, all of this for me too. I too saw PACKIES first and was relieved to spot COOKIES to avoid the awkwardness. I thought it was a sensible decision on Fred's part not to read out PACKIES but would have been equally fine with him reading it out. Seems a non-issue to me, and something Fred shouldn't have had to defend himself over.

Had the decision been to include this particular non-racist word among the maxes, it would be a non-issue.
That it was omitted, makes it an issue, and raises more interesting questions.

(The lengthy discussion that ensued -and that you just contributed to- kind of proves that point.)

Callum v Jack would be a great game, but one which would only be possible in an SF this series given that they are seed's 2 and 3 :)

Well, I suppose I'd better try again.

I'll go Rob vs Jack then...

Is Susie lexing, Paul? (And does that mean I’ll have to listen out more carefully for the maxes she mentions and * the ones she doesn’t)

I mean that was probably scheduled long before ZoomDown existed looking at when it was filmed.

Shame the shout-out for it was mentioned in real countdown in today's episode, rather than yesterday before the final though.

Happy New Year fellow Countdownites

The draw for ZD Numberists S2:

Mon 4th January 2021:

Thomas Cappleman vs Sam Cappleman-Lynes (The Cappleman-Off)
Bradley Horrocks vs Antoinette Ryan
Peter Clarke vs Matthew Tassier
Elizabeth Beer vs Tim Down

Mon 11th January 2021:

Noel McIlvenny vs Jon O'Neill (Ulster Final)
Elliott Mellor vs Vincent Barcet
Eoin Monaghan vs Chris Butler
Stephen Read vs Trevor Birenbaum

These two "groups" constitute halves of the draw, so the final will be the winner of the 4th Jan half vs the winner of the 11th Jan half

Some tasty ones

Bonjour,

I watched some of this on Monday after discovering it after searching for 'Countdown Episodes' on YouTube.

I would love to have a crack at it but as i am in Canada it is during the day and i work Mon-Fri in a supermarket from 9am to 6pm (Canadian Time) so i won't be able to be available all times, i do have a holiday in February but i may not be able to carry on if i win (unlikely) so i won't risk messing it up.

I look forward to seeing more. I did watch the final with Susie Dent on catch-up as well

Jonathan.

If you subscribe to that YouTube channel Jonathan, the video links are normally put up a day or two in advance so you'll see them ahead of time. Or if you use twitter, there is a twitter account @LiveZoomDown. Failing that, Mondays and Thursdays at 8pm UK time is generally when they're on.

Congrats to Elliott, our numberists winner, and Callum our goat winner who even managed a bit of beardown! Great games, and thanks to all who entered those contests - the standard was jaw-dropping!

You might like this puzzle posed by one of our viewers on the youtube chat -

"There are only 761 words which can be used as a goatdown conundrum with ANY one of their nine letters being the hidden letter. Can you name one?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJTiRT-DDek (Reply there so he sees it!)

We'll be back on the 15th February with the regular series - Zubair will be aiming for tetrachampdom and will be playing our own Paul Anderson!

Well, you get your wish Matt.

And that's all folks....

Huh? What wish? I was talking about the title, it reminded me of the end of Looney Tunes cartoons.

Can I suggest some sort of anonymous online feedback form for Zoomdown?

That would allow the viewers to express the things that we particularly like or think could be improved and could maybe be taken on board to make Zoomdown even better.

I'm happy to provide feedback here, though I do think there are benefits to anonymising feedback, e.g. people can say what they feel without having to worry about being mean/harsh (which I'm a little concerned about coming across as here! I don't like offending people!) and also you can collect a small sample of data to see if different people have the same thoughts without them influencing each other on a thread.

Anyway, here is a bit of feedback from me:

- I love the community vibe. I enjoy the interactions with chat and wouldn't want to see it become too 'professional'.

- I like it when a contestant is on and they are able to talk about themselves. However I sometimes think it comes across as if you take up a lot of this time talking about your own experiences and anecdotes. I don't think the interjections are an issue in themselves, but sometimes I feel like the contestants might have more to say but aren't able to direct the conversation where they want it to go. (Of course, sometimes a contestant might be less talkative and may need a bit of prompting.)

- Also, I don't have any interest at all in what you happened to have got in a particular round (sorry Paul). I appreciate the enjoyment of joining in with the game but I think as host, the objective is to facilitate the game between two players - they are the people whose declarations I care about. Sometimes it might be a different word of equivalent length that personally I feel doesn't add to the content. Other times, I also think it could be quite frustrating/disheartening for the players if the host announces that they've beaten them. However, I do think there is interest if you come up with a word that is particularly interesting, or a pretty numbers solve.

I do feel the above could come across as a bit harsh, which I don't intend it to be. I really appreciate what you're doing for the community, I think you're a charismatic and enterntaining host and I really love Zoomdown. These are just a couple of ways I think it could be improved. I'd also be interested to hear what other people thought about these points.

I'd second everything Dan said, including a similar concern about bringing it up, particularly when it relates so much to your personal style. You really are a great host of the show, and the only criticisms are of things that come from your clear enthusiasm for it - it just may help to tweak the result of that enthusiasm in that small way.

If I were to pick one of Dan's points to particularly change, it'd be not announcing what you've got when it's better than the contestants. It does give a different and slightly off impression when the host does that (especially if you win a round when distracted by other things), compared to Rachel/Susie doing so with that as their key role. I think leaving it to the computer to just determine what the best options are, when you know that's always going to be the best, seems better. Though even this depends on the contestants - if you beat Rob on a letters round, or Elliott on anything, then feel free to go ahead and revel in your victory!

I take your points, not sure where/when I've misdirected the convo tho. I try to get the players to chat, period. Sometimes this is easy, sometimes not. I'm looking forward to dealing with complete strangers this series, as it's the bit I enjoy most.
The other point I feel applies to CD much more than ZD, where we've had a very high calibre of player, better than me on average. I'd wager most times they were a Rob eg

But thanks for your honesty.
You're correct Tom, it does depend on the level of player and I will naturally tone it down for new players.

I definitely could have worded things better here. I actually don't believe there has been much misdirection. On reflection, I'm thinking it's just down to word count. As in, when it comes to the section where the contestant gets to introduce a bit about themselves, I'd like as many of the words said in that section to to be said by the contestant, if that makes sense. Of course, this is very dependent on how talkative the person is.

But again want to reiterate that I appreciate what you're doing, and this is a nitpick, and is also something very difficult to do! Thank you being happy to take on board the comments!

See you in series 3!

Thanks for the responses Paul. These things are all on a scale and subject to preference, so don't want you to start second guessing yourself. Maybe as an actionable point (I'm in work mode, sorry), you could quickly check before the episode starts whether there's anything the contestants would particularly like to talk about. I know in my second appearance there was something (can't even remember what), but we ended up talking about music because of the keyboard behind me, which I wasn't actually that bothered about talking about.

No idea how many people will actually have something, but if they do that'll probably help them show what they're passionate about - like Elliott with his longevity facts.

And amazing work with the documentary, really well edited. Wasn't sure how you were going to fill 80 minutes worth, but it sped by.

Yeah I expect this series to be very different, with me or any of us probably not familiar with half of the players. ZD has had a very community feel til now, with all the liberties that go with that.

Cheers on the docu, yeah I’m most pleased I got it to a watchable length, from well over 2.5 hours

The documentary was great, even if I did come across as a bit of a tit.

The camera really does add 10lb...
