Special Spoilers for Tuesday 22nd December 2020 (Special S48)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

The second of these three specials, then. More Colin Murray - hooray!

CALLUM TODD
Highest score: 127 vs Samir Pilica, Championship of Champions Round of 16
Lowest score: 70 vs Ritch Greenwood, game 1
Score: 1,300
Average: 100.00
Max faced: 1,679
% score: 77.4%
Raw score: 1,395
Raw average: 107.31
Raw % score: 83.1%
Conundrums: 9/14

JACK HURST
Highest score: 143 vs Wayne Kelly, 30BC Round 1
Lowest score: 108 vs Peter Godwin, Quarter Final & vs Mark Deeks, 30BC Prelim Round
Score: 1,984
Average: 116.71
Max faced: 2,165
% score: 91.6%
Raw score: 2,010
Raw average: 118.24
Raw % score: 92.8%
Conundrums: 13/17

Statistically you would think Jack has it in the bag, but Callum's numbers are weighed down by his first few prelims and both of these two are certainly two of the top 10 players to have made their on-screen debuts in the 2010s.

Unlike yesterday I'm a true neutral since neither of them were Series 73.

It seems that Rachel accidentally wore her smutty joke 8/10 Cats Does Countdown Christmas jumper on real Countdown.

Good spot. Although, I'd doubt it would be accidental at all given how fussy CD apparently are about what you wear on the show. (Only something I've heard second hand though, so probably bollocks)

Also seems that C4 didn't see the need to amend 'Nick Hewer' to 'Colin Murray' in the standard one line show description on the website for these specials.

The pretend handshake at the end was good.

R6 alt: 3 times the sum of the rest.

Well played both. Still surprised that BIG-HEADS hasn't lost its hyphen.

Not seen this back but I'm glad if the silly mimed handshake was visible after the edit. Jack would do this sort of handshake to us on videocall when we played over webcam over the past few months, and I liked the idea of keeping a sporting gesture in despite all the Covid guidelines.

Filming was great fun, I enjoyed it much more than my previous outing at the CoC. Jack played superbly from what I felt were very tricky selections, and it was great to be able to share that experience with him after getting to know him better this year through his Co:Vid events. Big thanks again to all the Countdown team and everyone involved at ITV and dock10 or whoever else was responsible for putting on the filming and pressing ahead with it despite the circumstances. Was flawlessly run and I feel very privileged and honoured to have been a part of it.

I'm concerned by the fact that presumably Callum was able to point to a physical manifestation of a bear in that round. How did it get into the studio?

Unfortunately I was not, and that is why my word scored 0 points.

Thx to everybody involved in making these specials happen, and especially whoever edited the episode for somehow doing the impossible and not making me look like a tit. It was great to be back in the studio. Hopefully in 2021 we'll have the chance to return as audience members.

Well played to Callum who is a great opponent and a great guy - it was a pleasure to share the occasion with you. On the day I suppose I just got lucky with how the selections fell.

I also particularly enjoyed the silly handshake being left in at the end.
