Combination Lock

Post by Adam Dexter »

I finally got round to doing the Combination Lock puzzles on the back of Co:Leeds 2016 programme.

I have no solutions for "Hard" and 4 solutions for the "Crazy".

Would appreciate if you could have a look and see if you concur:

(Both puzzles concern a 4 reel padlock with digits 0-9, the object being to solve the code)

HARD
  • Reel C times Reel A equals Reel B times Reel D
The First reel and reel B are the same number
The First reel plus reel C is 2 more than Reel B plus the last reel
    The digits total 14
CRAZY
  • The answer is divisible by 5
The first reel plus the last reel equals reel B
Reel D plus reel B is 4 more than Reel C plus Reel A

I have worked them out using Excel and filtered, but it seems the "Hard" one is impossible.

If so, 0086 works for Hard.

Assuming 1st is A, does 0086 work?

Ahh silly me started with 1000 as the first combo as Excel kept removing my leading zeroes... Yes 0086 works and Reel A is the first reel.

As for the Crazy one?

I get 5 solutions to Crazy (probably your 4 plus the one before 1000), any of [0-4][5-9]65

Yes, but surprisingly Reel B is the last reel.

Thanks :) Yes mine too end in 65. Glad it's not just me. Anyone got Excel skills to keep the leading zeroes?

These puzzles were lifted from this website.

They refer to reels as 'the first reel' and 'reel A' (and so on) interchangeably.

Many of the puzzles can have multiple solutions.
