I had MACARONIS* in one round but doesn't seem to be valid.

Definition 1 has the mass noun tag but definition 2 does not: "2 An 18th-century British dandy who imitated continental fashions."

Am I misunderstanding or should that be a 9?

The plural is specified in the dictionary as macaronies.

Thanks :) I take it no restaurant rule trickery either?

No, it doesn't change the plural as Graeme has already told you!

I do find it slightly annoying that they're often not explicit about this sort of thing though and just leave it hanging. So many people at home would have been wondering about MACARONIS. Just tell us why it's not allowed!

Haha bejeezus that's a memory you have there... 5 years ago that comment was.

Still getting to grips with this years later :(

Also, how come Macaroni as in the penguin isn't in Lexico at all? Seems to be an omission... reckon that could be pluralised if it was in, restaurant rule or otherwise :D

https://www.lexico.com/definition/macaroni_penguin

Presumably the plural is "macaroni penguins", but even if you wanted to use a short-form plural it would still be "macaronies", not least because the penguins are actually named after the dandies that are one of the definitions of the main "macaroni" entry.
