I guess that's a no then. 8-)

Now it's finished I'm not much wiser as to what it was all about, but it was imaginative, thought-provoking and I enjoyed the ride. Also, the soundtrack featured some great original music, of which this is a standout example.

Meanwhile, having started two weeks ago, I'm three seasons in to Schitt's Creek and absolutely loving it. Somebody called it "Breaking Good" which sums it up pretty neatly. The last episode of season 2 (the one with the anniversary dinner) has joined the finale of Blackadder Goes Forth and Inside No. 9's The Twelve Days of Christine on my list of the finest TV episodes of all time.

Because we have never been so spoilt for choice and time to watch TV and box sets I have been giving shows a 4 episodes trial .
I tend to judge if it's worth sticking with or not by then.
I think the biggest test of that system recently was Dark (Netflix) . The subtitles kept making me tired but when I switched to dubs and the dubbing actors were reasonable did I start to properly get into it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's the best Netflix show ever.
But it needs some concentration.
You certainly can't play with your phone whilst watching it. But I got round that by watching it on my phone 🙂

Just finishing a binge watch of Black Books, having had the DVD on my shelf for at least ten years. Very funny show. :D

Finally got to the end of Derry Girls series 1. Excellent as ever, slightly odd ending, although I can understand why they did it.

Currently watching the weird but wonderful Lovecraft Country.
Great special effects and period setting.
It still jars me about the treatment of Afro-American in some parts of the USA in the fifties

I've recently finished watching series 3 of The Young Offenders on the iPlayer - the programme I watch because of the recommendations of Marc Meakin and Phil Reynolds.

Just started watching Battlestar Galactica. Got the two feature-length introductory episodes out of the way and about to start on the series proper. It's quite good so far.

Also: having finished all six seasons of Schitt's Creek, I'd have to say that it deserves every one of its record-breaking nine Emmys. Started off despising the characters and ended up having not cared about a group of fictional people so much in a long time. Discovering this joyous series was the single greatest silver lining of lockdown.

Kudos to you for spotting Schitts Creek potential.
I have restarted season 1 as I have Netflix ADHD.
I have so many shows half watched and not even because they are no good (still to watch season 3 of both Dark and Stranger things).

I did however binge watch The Duchess written and starring Katherine Ryan.
Hilarious but not for the faint hearted

Avenue 5 was good fun, far from Excellent but definitely recommended for Iannucci fans.

Just gone through most of The Eric Andre Show which I quite enjoyed but absolutely would not recommend to any of you.

Recently finished second series of Atlanta. Kind of ambles around but perhaps all the more charming for it. Generally very good.

Half way through Gangs of London. Definitely one of the best British-produced TV shows I've watched in a while. Very stylish cinematography and whilst the dialogue and plot are occasionally a bit cliched, the action is second to none. Some of the most impressive fight/shootout sequences I've ever seen. Highly recommended if you have a stomach for tense violence.

Wasn't too long ago did the two seasons of American Gods. Very good overall although second season felt like it didn't really go anywhere, which makes it slightly hard to recommend.

Most recent completion (this post is, taken chronologically, absolutely horrible) was the first two (aka "only two" but fuck me I'm excited) seasons of Succession. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Definitely can recommend, especially to Phil I would think, who will no doubt appreciate the acting and the excellent characterisation. Who will you love? Who will you hate? Who will you love-hate? Not the sort of show I usually watch (based on general themes) but was recommended by a close friend who is into screenwriting and can see why. Really good.

Fargo season 4 just started but may do Raised by Wolves first.

Missed out Watchmen. Again, when it comes to top-level themes if you'd told me it was a "superheroes" show I would have steered clear. It was probably only the soundtrack work of Reznor and Finch that drew me in, and I'm glad it did as it was brilliant. Along with Succession probably the best 2 things I've seen this year (unless I'm forgetting some others).

Just binged season one of Utopia (2020) on Amazon Prime.
I really enjoyed it, it won't stand up in comparison to the UK version obviously but what TV Sci fi can ( OK, maybe Devs).
It managed to add an interesting subplot too.
John Cusack was excellent as the antagonist and Rainn Wilson is always watchable.
Give it a whirl although I see the UK version is on Prime so maybe watch that first

I did watch the first episode of succession mainly because Jesse Armstrong wrote it and the writing and acting was top notch, but for me and this is probably just me, I cannot root for these odious characters and similarly to Wolf of Wall Street and Leo was superb in this unless I know there is a spiralling downward it would just make my blood boil to continue with this greed is good mantra.

I also hated Dallas too apart from when Jr got shot.

That's why I like Schitts Creek so much.
It's probably my socialism that prevents from enjoying these shows and films but I can at leady appreciate the craft that goes into it

Queens Gambit (on Netflix)
A mini series about a female chess prodigy is definitely not in my wheelhouse but this mini-series is a joy to behold.
The directing and camerawork are amazing and the female lead is perfect.
The last episode is probably the best series finale I've seen in a very long time.
Cannot recommend this more highly

Two episodes in and I'm enjoying the new season of The Crown, but I have to say I'm disappointed in Gillian Anderson as Thatcher. The voice is all wrong - it's as if she's trying too hard to do an impersonation, rather than just inhabiting the character in the way Jason Watkins did so beautifully last season as Harold Wilson. And, for a series with such an astronomical budget, you'd think they could have given her a more convincing wig.

On the plus side, she's nailed Thatcher's humourlessness and lack of empathy.

Best Series so far for me.
Episode 3, Fairytale and 9, Avalanche are the stand out ones for me and only Fagan (5) was weak though still worth watching.
I'm currently watching the documentary series on Thatcher so I can say that Anderson portrayal was good but she is playing her more as her she appeared in the late eighties and its only in the final episode War where she truly shines as Thatcher.
Although I enjoyed it more as it was when things finally went sour for her.

All in all the best thing on Netflix this year closely followed by Queens Gambit

I know The Crown isn't famed for historical accuracy but Thatcher apparently asking the Queen to dissolve Parliament to prevent her ousting would almost certainly never have happened. It wouldn't have stopped the process, it was an internal Conservative Party matter.

I am not a fan of American political dramas but this is exceptional the writing is top notch from Aaron Sorkin and the cast is superb.

Watching the West Wing.
I can no longer call this the best show I have never watched..
I'm not sure why I didn't even try to watch this first time round, although as I remember the late 1990s was probably the period I was working hardest.

Just binge watched the first 2 seasons ( 40 odd episodes) in 10 days, would have been more but more 4 makes you watch 10 to 15 minutes of ads each episode.
My favourite episode has to be the Season 2 finale 2 Cathedrals.
Probably the best hour of US TV I've seen since the Ozymandius episode of Breaking Bad.
The Writing, acting and plotting is superb.
I am glad that I'm binging it now as I would have hated to wait for the cliff hanger season finales to be resolved

Succession (both seasons but particularly the second) - outstandingly good. I stood up and applauded the TV at the end of some episodes.
Queen's Gambit - pretty good.
The Crown - only half way through but really enjoying this as an easy watch. And agree with Phil about Thatcher.

I'm re-watching Skins which I thought was amazing at the time. I was just the right age for seasons 1/2... I am now not the right age at all.

I was toying with watching Succession it ticks a lot of boxes.
Jesse Armstrong writing Brian Cox and Sara Snook.
But there is something about the excesses of wealth and greed that put me off.

Wolf of Wall Street I loathed and yet I can appreciate how well made it was and DiCaprio deserved an Oscar for his performance ( although he didn't win) . But I couldn't watch it again.
I do find it difficult to enjoy films where the protagonists are not likeable but I only watched the pilot of Succession so maybe it gets better.
But I have watched a lot of stuff where I wouldn't be drawn in by the themes.
Like Queens Gambit, Phantom Thread, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Moonlight.
I am currently enjoying Small Axe made by Steve McQueen about being black in London in the seventies and eighties

You might struggle with Succession. But give it a go. At worst it's beautifully crafted.

How about another example of the protagonists all being horrendous people - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?

Am watching Battlestar Galactica on BBC2. It's quite good, very untypical sci-fi (being more about politics, philosophy and personal relationships than technical stuff), and holds up well for an effects-heavy show from 15 years ago.

Death to 2020 (Netflix)
If i saw this last year i would have dismissed it as too far fetched.
Its effectively Charlie Brooker's News Wipe with a bigger budget.
Samuel L Jackson gets the best lines.

Oh, I saw his show a handful of times in the 90s, that was a hard no too!

It's A Sin
Drama exploring the AIDS crisis of the mid-80s. Watching this once per week on Channel 4 rather than all at once online, which I reckon is the right choice. Olly Alexander is a surprisingly good actor, and also has the added bonus of looking about half his age which means he's able to play a university student excellently despite being 31. No one steals the show despite some high-profile cameos from Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Fry, and well worth a watch.

RuPaul's Drag Race UK
We're on Ep4 of Series 2 but the trailer for next week has - bizarrely - chosen to include the moment filming was suspended in March, which is a very odd decision. Has any other show done this?

Also, Fireman Sam is on the iPlayer and I'm now 5 years old again.

Staged.
Very funny lockdown comedy starring Michael Sheen and David Tenant.
Lots of nice cameos and each episode is only 20 minutes long.
It is mainly zoom calls but it is rather good.
Just finished season 1.

Just watch it already. Don't worry about what other people have compared it to.

Funnily enough I think Staged has got elements of Curb in it.

But if it's constantly compared to things I think are terrible, it's not really encouraging is it? It's not like I've time to watch things I probably won't like when it takes me years to watch things I do like!

Huge It's a Sin SPOILERS below...

I know I'm probably going to take pelters for this but I think it's massively overrated.

I didn't like Richie. What a prick. He seems like someone I'd actively detest in real life. And that's got nothing to do with him being imperfect, and I'd already realised this before he revealed that he'd knowingly infected hundreds of men (are we ok with that?), and I already hated him before the worst of it was revealed - that he was a Tory. Those things obviously didn't help but he was just about the worst character in it, although his parents are both stiff competition.

The "la" thing just made me cringe. I cringed just now typing it and I'm cringing again now thinking how it just made me cringe.

The acting was pretty good on the whole, the music was great, and it did do relentlessly bleak heart-tugging very well (Marcus at the end... fuck) which is fitting for such a dark period. But yeah, I can't say I enjoyed it very much.

I haven't watched it, but seeing the trailers, it seems that Alan Partridge is in it.

I too wasnt sympathetic to Richie who compared to Colin was a promiscuous asshole but i liked the fact that this story was a warts and all tale and Richie was by no means in the minority with his actions.
I have bern accused of homphobia in rhe past for frowning at promiscuity within the gay conmunity but i also have the same opinion of the hetreosexual community too.

Keely Hawes in that last episode was just incredible.
I was very sympathetic to her character until she denied his friends a last chance to say giodbye.

Colin was by far the best character in it and i liked the way his story of how ge contracted HIV was told like a whodunnit.

Also like Roscoe and the scene with his father near the end was brilliant

Cant Get You Out of My Head.
A 6 part documentary that delves into issues of mind control, free will, conspiracy theorists and a whole heap of mind fuckery.
It is really rather brilliant.

Rachel Riley is on The Celebrity Circle. Well, kind of. You'd have to watch to understand.

I got about halfway through Series 3 before giving up on it, although I might force myself to watch the rest. Claire Foy is a better QEII than Olivia Coleman for me, and Matt Smith's Philip is so much better than his replacement to the extent I can't even name him.

The problem with Series 3, and to a lesser extent Series 2, is it gets very formulaic at times and standalone, rather than giving a wider narrative and story arc over the course of the series. I have the same complaint about many other TV shows like this...

MI High (2007-14) is now back up on BBC iPlayer, although rather stupidly all the episodes with germs / viruses / bacterias / flus etc have been removed. This suffers from the same problem in its last two series - the episodes that play into the series narrative are far, far, FAR better than the standalone ones.

Frank of Ireland.
Set in Dublin its very funny and sweet in parts.
Think of it as a more risque adult version of The Young Offenders.

The first episode is probably the weakest but it appealed to me especially as Dublin is one of my favourite cities and I do like Dominhal Gleeson and his brother.
The clever film references are brilliant and the last episode had a very clever twist.

I watched the first episode of the new series of Inside No 9 the other day. Nothing special but hopefully there'll be some good ones in there.

Also, all of Blackadder is on the iPlayer and I've started watching the under-rated and for-some-reason-rarely-repeated first series. I also found the pilot episode here and I've just watched that. You're welcome.

First episode was very clever especially if you are familiar comedia Italia and Reservoir dogs.
Also enjoyed the Meta moments

I did watch all of these in the end. I'd say it was better than the first episode seemed to indicate. Wait - what was the clever twist?
