Apterous World Cup 2018: Announcement

Post by Matt Morrison »

It's later than the real World Cup this time, but this is still fucking happening!

32 players.
Obviously. One per team in the real thing.
However, the tournament is most definitely open to all - we'll just run a qualifying round as before to whittle down to 32. Last time we had 48 entrants, of which 16 top players were automatically seeded and the other 32 played off for the final 16 places. I don't intend to put a limit on signups this time, so if we have more than 48 I'll find a way to work it out.
As before, at some point after the 32 players are confirmed, team assignations will match apterous ratings to FIFA rankings (pre-World Cup).

Gameplay.
Went well before. "Apterous World Cup" format on apterous. Winners only scoring, 7 rounds (LLNLLLN).
Extra time (LNLN) and penalties (CCCCC+) separate draws in qualifying and knockout stages.
In the group stages draws count (last time we did this the "allow draws" wasn't an option for tournaments, retro!).
The nations that make up the initial groups will mirror the real world cup - see the wiki article for more info.

Entry requirements.
Be reliable. Have a real photo of you that I can access either via Facebook or you emailing it to me. Haters gonna hate.

Qualifying will be set up, announced and begin around 14th/15th August kind of time.
Only 35 signups so far, so hoping we can get closer to the 48 of last time... come on!

Ok, got my 48 signups. Even though I'm pretty sceptical about some of the faceless amongst them. Let's hope they all get knocked out in qualifying.

I've just done the top 16 via Pro Ranks, like we did last time. As before, it has thrown up some ridiculousness with massive names like Ben, Graeme, Ryan and Gevin not currently ranked due to inactivity.

This crudely formatted list shows the top 16 entrants based on pro ranks, numbers at the end being the pro ranks:

Code: Select all

1	Zarte Siempre	2
2	Luke Johnson-Davies	5
3	Thomas Carey	6
4	Eddy Byrne	7
5	Thomas Cappleman	10
6	Bradley Horrocks	12
7	Tim Down	13
8	Amie Bateen	23
9	John Cowen	26
10	J E	31
11	James Robinson	32
12	Transude Transude	34
13	Sean Fletcher	35
14	Tom Chafer-Cook	37
15	Jonny D	44
16	Matty Artell	46
Will do the double elimination draw shortly and get the fixtures up!

Did something change in Pro Ranks by the way Gevin?

Checked last year's and Heather had a pro rank of 545th.
This year there are 8 people unranked entirely (lowest ranked player is 183rd).

I'm not sure how it works exactly. It was claimed that you had to be completely inactive to fall off - so even if you played just numbers attacks that have no effect on your pro rank, you'd stay ranked. Maybe that's changed because I'm definitely active, just not in 15 rounders.

I like how I'm a massive name.

I won't. They signed up agreeing to the rules, so I'll give them a chance to provide a picture. They don't have to have one on apterous (as I can't grab them from apterous anyway). But yeah, I expect I'll have to do some shitty eliminating and reinstating and organisational bollocks that I really won't enjoy soon... :(
