Weird. I'm not a music snob at all - I like bits from almost all genres. But I always found Avicii fucking awful. I'm really surprised that so many people have lost their shit about it.
We agree on one thing musically anyway.
I've just been listening to some of his stuff on YouTube. There are a few things I recognise, but it's largely "background music". I know he was commercially successful, but he also was nothing like a household name in the way someone like George Michael was. But then I think there are fewer household names in music these days anyway. You get a few really big names, and the rest are generally only known by people who go out of their way to pay attention to these things. Guy off the street wouldn't have known who Avicii was.
I just want to return to the discussion of this briefly. With someone like George Michael, he sang songs. It was obvious what his contribution was. But I'm not entirely sure what Avicii actually did. As far as I'm aware he was a "DJ". OK, let's go to the Wikipedia. Take the song "
Wake Me Up" - I've just looked it up on the
Wikipedia and it says ""Wake Me Up" was written by Avicii, Mike Einziger, and Aloe Blacc. American soul singer Aloe Blacc provides vocals for the track and Mike Einziger of Incubus provides acoustic guitar." Is this enough for it to be "by Avicii"? Imagine how many number ones Stock, Aitken and Waterman would have if things always worked like that... But as for "
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" it has George Michael written all over it (well, it's by Wham! actually but it's a conveniently similar title so I had to use it).
