Hullo Matt,

I've just had to do a factory reset on my laptop (start-up loop, bah), but I retained user data while doing so.

Given that all of the user data still exists (I used the "Restore Operating System and Retain User Data" option"), is there a way of restoring my old user profile?

I presume that I'll have to reinstall software etc, but it would be nice to dive straight back into my old browser profile for example. I've not yet looked to see if that's there (have to go to work, meh).

Was this a factory reset with a Windows disk or a recovery disk from the manufacturer?
I don't recognise the name of the option you used which suggests something manufacturer-specific.

Ok, so looks like Acer eRecovery utility perhaps?

If so, this page which covers the recovery options from BIOS has a video and that video shows the screen where you choose recovery options which mentions user data will be retained in C:/backup. I didn't watch the video or do any more searching, no point spending any more time in case you aren't using Acer.

It wasn't Acer, but Packard Bell, although I suspect it's the same underlying software. The backed-up data is indeed in the file you mention, I just couldn't work out if it would be possible to resurrect my user profile from the data in there - I basically don't know whether the relevant information is in there, and if it is, how to utilise it.

I suspect I'd have to replace the files in the current profile maybe? Maybe the profile info is stored elsewhere. I was hoping that I'd be able to run something to sort it out. Thanks for looking at this :)

What does the backup folder look like inside? Name some of the folders or files you see? (screenshot maybe?)
Perhaps there's a good chance you can just select all and copy it into the now-empty C:/Documents and Settings/Ian folder (or equivalent)

I ordered one of these last week after seeing this thread. I've been looking for one for a while but they all seemed pretty expensive, so this one looked ideal. It finally arrived today after a week-long saga with Amazon Logistics (but that's another story) and I have the same problem as you. I want to copy stuff I've got recorded on our BT Vision box, but it only has the red and white AV connectors, not the yellow, and the S-Video connector is female like the one on the August device. I think the solution is to buy a male-to-male S-Video cable. I would probably need to buy an extension cable anyway, since the S-Video connector on the August is very short, meaning I can't connect the TV recorder to the computer via S-Video unless they're sat right next to each other - fine if I had a laptop, not so easy with a tower.

On the bright side, the main thing I'll be using it for is digitising old VHS tapes, and our video machine has all three AV connectors.

I spoke too soon. After wasting a couple of hours trying to get the thing working, with the capture software just saying "No video signal detected", I discovered that the red/white/yellow phono connectors on the front of the video machine are inputs, not outputs. :( There are the usual red and white audio outputs on the back, but no video out. So it now looks like I need to buy a SCART to AV adaptor cable.

This certainly worked for my Firefox data. Am now digging around for other stuff, would be nice to have my desktop back the way I like it.

Not a huge amount, but it's a faff digging out gigs worth of data files and copying them across. Just inexperienced at this sort of nonsense!

Pleased to report that the S-video cable I bought did the trick. Recorded my Chase episode today in real time and then trimmed out the adverts in Windows Movie Maker.

I'm on BT Infinity broadband at home which gives me up to 40Gb data transfer per month. Until now this has been fine - our average monthly usage has been around half that. But towards the end of last month, for the first time, I had an email warning me that we had gone over 70% of our quota; and now we're around half way through December and our usage is already well over 50%. Although we have a number of internet-enabled devices (two PCs, two iPads, two iPhones, an iPod, a Kindle and a BT Vision box), this has been the case for some time and our pattern of usage hasn't changed significantly. So what's going on? Could someone be hacking into our wi-fi? Could some malware be transferring large amounts of data for some reason? (I'm running a full system virus scan on my PC as I type.) Anyone else had this kind of problem?

Is it not possible to log-in to BT and get some analytics for where or at least when the data is being used? (If not, there should be.)

Couldn't agree more, Conor. every time I received one of those 70% letters/emails I used to badger BT for the information, but all to no avail. They have access to it but won't give us access!

You can definitely get programs for your PCs that monitor and cumulatively total all network traffic. I'm pretty sure similar can be done with the iDevices. The Kindle will use fuck all, especially as you won't be using it for web browsing, but it's the BT Vision box that is an unknown quantity to me. Still, if you can get info on all the other devices that could tell you something of the accuracy of BT's letter.

Anyone know why my modem keeps restarting itself. The technician form my IP couldn't find anything wrong with the connection and gave us a new modem but now that one is doing it too. PC is only a few months old too.

Thanks for the comments. On further investigation I found that switching to BT's unlimited usage broadband will only cost me £1.42 a month more than I'm paying for the version with the 40Gb limit, so rather than faff around trying to work out where the allowance is going, it seemed less hassle just to change. 8-)

The space bar on my laptop has stopped working. (Before anyone says, I'm copying and pasting a space each time), every other key is fine. I have tried cleaning the keys and there is nothing lodged underneath them. Anyone got any ideas??

You probably have nothing to lose in prising it off and seeing if something is stuck or come out of place underneath. Just watch out in case there's a spring that flies off.

I'm pretty sure this would not be anything to do with the PC. Presumably you can keep an eye on the modem lights whilst the PC is off to confirm it still plays up of its own accord.

Having tried two modems makes it harder to blame the phone line too - though even when you get a dodgy phone line it would cause the modem to drop the Internet connection, not to actually reboot itself. Did you buy the same modem as the replacement? Right now seems most likely you've been really unlucky with two modems with hardware faults or there is something wrong with the power point you're plugging them in to. Try another power socket or a splitter with surge protection.

Yay, all the porn!

It goes without saying that if you really thought your connection was being piggybacked on by some nearby rascal then upping the data allowance doesn't fix everything. But yeah, I'm sure it's just natural. Maybe change your WiFi password anyway.

Why does my phone keep disconnecting from my home wifi and not just connect automatically any more? It expects me to manually reconnect. My laptop hasn't undergone a similar change (therefore proving it's not the wifi) and my phone hasn't had the same problems at other people's houses (therefore proving it's not the phone).

Any possibility you have another known wifi network available from the house and it occasionally gets confused about which to join? I have seen people have this problem before if they've ever joined a free BT hotspot, often the network is just called "BT WiFi" and if you happen to have a neighbour who has a BT Home Hub they may also have a hotspot network with the same name.

But that's pretty much my only idea. I guess in general forgetting all WiFi networks and then adding it again might help.

We get the modem free from our IP. Its the same make as the last one. I jiggled the power supply wire the other day to see if there was a loose connection and its been fine ever since. Looks likely that it was an issue with that. I don't get why the IP technician couldn't suggest that. Cheers Matt.

There shouldn't have been a problem as far as I can see but I made it forget all the networks and started again and so far it's been OK. So thank you!

Hi,
Hope someone can help.
Laptop died and bought a new one running Windows 8. effin 1
Can't get apterous to run. I've had these problems before after Java updates but always managed to solve with a bit of googling but not this time.

It says ClassNotFoundException, then
applet.frontend.MainApplet

I've removed the McAfee trial and am currently running Windows Defender (which is apparently now an anti-virus program) along with the Windows firewall. I've tried messing about with these settings, disabling them, along with adding apterous into exceptions in Java control panel - all to no avail.
Which brings me to a secondary question: is running Windows Defender along with Windows firewall enough to keep me secure?

Dear MM

A couple of days ago I got in a slight kerfuffle trying to edit a comment on a Facebook status, which I messed up so badly I ended up deleting the comment and reposting it. It seemed to work, but ever since, whenever I go on Facebook in Firefox, my cursor changes to the "busy" cursor (the arrow with the little spinning blue circle next to it). I've restarted the browser, logged out and back in to Facebook, restarted the computer, and it's still there. Any idea how to stop this? It's annoying.

Sorry but that sounds absolutely mental. And Facebook/Firefox is not crashing or hanging, it's working perfectly normally but with the busy cursor?
And you change tabs to something else and the cursor goes back to normal?

As well as restarting the browser try ctrl-shift-del to bring up the clear recent history dialog, try clearing form & search data, cookies and cache, for the past whatever should cover it.

Yep to all that.

I'm reluctant to try that since, as I mentioned, the problem began a couple of days ago and Firefox has no option to clear history for any time period between "today" and "everything" - I don't want to lose all my cookies. I did try clearing all form and search data but with no effect.

But in any case the problem appears to be with FB as I tried opening it with Internet Explorer instead of Firefox and it does the same thing...

Specifically, if I open a new tab and go to Facebook (initially displaying my news feed) it's fine, but as soon as I go to another FB page (e.g. someone's timeline, or my messages, or a group page) I get the busy cursor, which then remains when I return to my news feed.

Further clarification: having just looked at the various available cursors in Control Panel and what they're called, the one I'm getting (a white arrow with a spinning blue circle next to it) is actually called the "working in background" cursor, not the "busy" cursor which is just the spinning blue circle by itself.

It's not really free. Not forever. And especially if you don't have a licensed copy. I don't know much about Windows 10 to be honest, like you I have avoided 8 but I do generally hear that 10 will be much better.

Phil - it's quite easy to only remove Facebook cookies (Tools > Options > Privacy > remove individual cookies > search "facebook" > Remove All) however, if you never use Facebook on IE and it still happens there then it's not going to be a Firefox cookie thing either.

It's very odd, and I can't duplicate the issue - even when the page is still loading I don't get the working in background thing.

It must be something that relates to both Firefox and IE, I'm wondering if it's a plugin like Java or something that you could try reinstalling.

Funnily enough, Firefox warned me the other day that my Java installation was out of date so I've just installed the latest version. No change. :(

Something about the circumstances in which the problem first appeared (editing, deleting and reposting a comment, during which I may have tried to reload a page that wasn't displaying correctly - I obviously can't remember the details now as I wasn't aware at the time that I might need to) makes me think that FB has some kind of internal flag set that makes it think I'm still in the process of trying to post a comment. Like when you get a message saying "Are you sure you want to leave this page? Data you have entered may be lost" etc. I'm just hoping it'll reset itself at some point.

But that would only apply to Firefox, and you haven't done the same thing (editing, deleting, reposting, closing tab) in IE to cause it to do that there.
What about repeating the process in Firefox, so that it gives you the "are you sure you want to leave?" message - and trying both yes and no to this.

That's why I suggested it might be an internal flag in Facebook, which is still set (against my account) regardless of which browser I use to access the site.

On my laptop that I got recently, it runs some applications very small. This appears to include Java, and I can't play Apterous properly on it. It's not just that it's small - some of the stuff gets cut off as well. It's a 13.3 inch screen, but Java is still small relative to the size of the screen. Anyway, I can't see a way to sort this out. And I'd be grateful if anyone knew how to!

If stuff is getting cut off despite windows being small it almost sounds like it is operating zoomed in. You don't have some accessibility setting on do you?

Try going to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display and check you're set to 100% rather than something bigger.

I can't find anything to suggest I'm running any weird settings, although I can't find anything that says specifically 100% (or indeed any percentage) as a general size setting. I don't think it's a settings thing as such. I worry it's a fundamental incompatibility between my laptop and Java.

By the way it also runs Internet Explorer by default as 200% because it's really small otherwise.

On the zoomed in thing - I don't think it looks very zoomed in. It's very small and hardly takes up any of the screen. Individual bits of text are cut off within their boxes, not round the edges of the whole thing.

I've just tried in Firefox (as well as Internet Explorer) and it's exactly the same. Tiny writing but certain bits cut off - like the bottom of the round selection of the duel and the right-hand side of the list of players online.

I have a major problem with my PC, which I recently had upgraded with a new SSD main drive, new memory and Windows 10. It's worked fine for a couple of weeks but suddenly all I get on startup is a BSOD with "Your PC/Device needs to be repaired" and error code 0xc0000225. It says to use recovery tools from installation media but I don't have any and the guy that did the upgrade for me is on holiday. Am I totally fucked?

I feel personally responsible when people post in this thread, though in this instance (and many others) all I can really do is Google. Top result is this: https://neosmart.net/wiki/0xc0000225/

That seems to have some ideas, including the option to make a boot disc that can perform the repair from their Easy Recovery Essentials tool. However I have done zero research as to whether this is a legit and trustworthy tool, though it probably is if it's top of Google results.

But before that, do you have a physical disc for Windows 10? It's quite possible that that can act as your recovery media, try booting with it in and see if you get any repair-y options from it. If you don't get a "press any key to boot from CD" option then try prioritising booting from CD over HDD by jamming F8 a bunch of times and following these instructions: http://www.boot-disk.com/boot_priority.htm

That looks promising although it's not free, but the simple-looking instructions have various bits that say "make sure you do this first" that then link off to other pages of instructions with more tools to download and I lost the will to continue.

As I said above I don't have any installation media. I tried something from Microsoft called Media Creation Tool but that failed - I've already posted the full gory details on Facebook so I won't bore you with them again here. My 10 year old niece put a password into her mobile phone and forgot it. Only way to unlock is to do a factory reset but she'll loose her photos. Anyone know a way of hacking the password? There's no "forgot your password?" option.

But yeah, if it's some website that requires you to hover to achieve some required functionality then they need to design for mobiles better.
