IMDB top 250
List is here.
How many have you seen? Also: what are your favourites? least favourites? ones you think are most overrated (without being least favourites)? Which one have you watched most recently? What's the most obscure one you've seen? What's the most obvious one you haven't?
- 70/250
- Goodfellas, Amelie, the Star Warses
- Sin City, Eternal Sunshine, Fight Club, Blade Runner (so boring I fell asleep during it)
- Inside Out, Big Lebowski, Scarface
- Rear Window
- The Bicycle Thieves
- Jurassic Park or the Indiana Joneses
I'll do a running chart of the number. Want to try and get to 100 by the end of the year.
1. Mark M - 168
2. Lav - 115
3. Conor - 105
4. Mark D - 102
4. Paul - 102
6. Sean F - 100
7. Mark J - 95
8. Sean D - 86
9. Jono - 83
10. Matt - 80
11. Jen - 71 [this number will probably increase quite a bit in coming weeks as I'm watching lots of films at the moment]
12. Jim - 57
13. Ben - 39
14. Graeme - 31
15. Jack - 11
16. Innis - 6

Re: IMDB top 250
I've seen 83.
My most obvious misses are probably:
The Usual Suspects
Back to the Future
Gladiator
Memento
Die Hard
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
Probably the most obscure one (at least from a Western perspective) I've seen is Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India which currently sits at 247.
Favourites are just my favourite films.. Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, The Shining
Inception is my least favourite.
The Harry Potters are the most overrated.
Can't remember the most recent. It's been a while whatever it was. Probably The Wolf of Wall Street.

Just 57 for me, but I'm not a big film watcher (insufficient attention span probably).
I don't think I've seen anything especially obscure (from that list), maybe 12 Angry Men, what with it being quite old and for some reason little-shown these days. The most obvious miss for me is Inception, as it covers all the stuff I'm interested in and has been out for fucking ages now.

I watched 12 Angry Men the other day! It's on Netflix - probably wouldn't have seen/heard of it without properly searching for it otherwise (title doesn't make it sound interesting, but Netflix summary did).JimBentley wrote:Just 57 for me, but I'm not a big film watcher (insufficient attention span probably).

Surprisingly high 102. Haven't seen Jurassic Park, Sixth Sense (doesn't seem much point now), Dark Knight or any Harry Potters. Probably never will either.

Just wondering, which list are you using? I found about 3 different versions when searching for the list.

Re: IMDB top 250
I have seen 105. A surprising increase on the last time I counted given that I no longer watch many films.
what are your favourites? - Aww, too many. So I'll just say American Beauty, Fight club, The Lion King and Leon.
least favourites? - Star Warz, Deadpool
ones you think are most overrated (without being least favourites)? - I agree with Harry Potter. And Pirates of the Caribbean too.
Which one have you watched most recently? - The Princess Bride
What's the most obscure one you've seen? - Not sure anything counts as obscure, but perhaps La Haine, Infernal Affairs, Twelve Monkeys
What's the most obvious one you haven't? - Quite a big one in Schindler's List. Also all the other Star Warz apart from the one I did see.

Fuck I think 80. It was pretty hard to count, I've had three hours sleep.
I care so little about the Star Wars films I don't even know which ones I've watched and which ones I haven't.

How Many Have You Seen- 95/250
Favourites- So many to choose from but I'll say Die Hard, The Sting and Usual Suspects as they tend to crop up the most when I discuss favourite films.
Least Favourites- Kill Bill, Dark Knight, The Matrix.
Overrated- 2001 A Space Odyssey, Snatch was way too high on the list, no way is it better than Lock Stock and Wolf of Wall Street.
Watched Most Recently- Inside Out (loved it).
Obscure You've Seen- Not sure how to judge this. Probably Before Sunset as I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever talk about that movie ever (it's alright I guess, wouldn't put it in a list of greatest movies ever though).
Obvious You Haven't- Any of the Godfathers.

102
Favourites The Godfather Part I and II (I think of them as one film), Shawshank Redemption.
Most disappointed: Citizen Kane.
Most obscure seen: Spirited Away
Most disliked/overrated: The Matrix or anything with Superheroes
Most obvious not seen: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Recommended if you've not seen them: Hotel Rwanda, Das Boot

Re: IMDB top 250
Surprised to see it's as high as 86 (or so) when I've literally watched about 2 films a year for the past decade. But then I suppose that's not true.... I've sat down with the kids and Toy Story and the like are contributing 15-20 of my 86. I've seen at least one of the Star Wars and one of the Lord of Rings ones and a couple of Batman ones, but I honestly couldn't tell you which ones.
Favourites: Life is Beautiful, Life of Brian, Godfathers, Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, Inside Out, Casino
least favourite: Star Wars and the like, Pirates of the Caribbean
overrated: Star Wars and the like, Truman Show, Up, Zootropolis
recent: Inside Out
obscure: none really, Chinatown and I guess some of the westerns don't get much of a run out these days
obvious unseen: some of the Star Warses, Matrix, Green Mile, Gladiator, Lion King, one or two of the Batman ones, practically anything since about 2006
And I'll follow Paul's lead with recommended ones that not everyone might have seen: Life is Beautiful, Leon, Memento, North by Northwest

70 - also a number of partials, e.g. got utterly bored of The Shining. I think I've seen The Big Lebowski all the way through (possibly twice!), but it's so unmemorable that I'm not sure. And why is The Dark Knight so highly rated? Just for Ledger's performance? Pretty perfunctory genre film otherwise. Also, given that I live in Edinburgh and work in Leith, I really should see Trainspotting, if only so I can equate the characters to the people I see lying in the road and shouting at lampposts round here.

31.
I'm guessing the most well-known one I haven't seen is The Shawshank Redemption, since that's listed first.
Do I have to have seen the whole film to count it? What if I've only seen, say, half of it? What about the last 20 minutes?

Only 11 for me as I hardly ever watch films. I've included Schindler's List, even though I'm not absolutely sure I've seen 75% of it. My favourite would be The Life of Brian, while I couldn't call a least favourite.

Re: IMDB top 250
I always say that I'm not much of a film person and that I would rather read the wikipedia plot to find out about a film than watch it.
It was surprising therefore that I notched up (what I think) is an impressive 67/250.
Favourites: Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Dark Knight, Forrest Gump, Up, Inglourious Basterds, Harry Potter Deathly allows: Part 2
Overrated: The Matrix, Star Wars,
Most recently: Captain America: Civil War (fell asleep)
Most obscure: Untouchable or Oldboy (still pretty mainstream)
Obvious one I haven't seen: The Lion King
I also half-watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but fell asleep to it so I've not counted that.
Despite knowing I've watched 67 of the 250 films, I would be troubled to actually recount what happens in them or even who the main actors/actresses are.

There is also a list of the Bottom 100 rated films: http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom
I have only seen one - Epic Movie - at it remains the only film where I have walked out of the cinema.

I actually haven't seen any of them which I found surprising considering I have a penchant for those terrible cheesy things like Sharknado and such. I think I instinctively knew never to watch any of those ______ Movie movies. I may have seen a few minutes of Ed while flicking through stations but that's the closest I've come to watching any of the films on that list.Conor wrote:There is also a list of the Bottom 100 rated films: http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom

His performance? I'd say more likely his death.Ian Volante wrote:And why is The Dark Knight so highly rated? Just for Ledger's performance?.
The media did a really good job of making this guy famous after he'd died by pretending he was that famous all along.

I did wonder if you would have seen most of them as I seem to recall you going through a phase when you were chipping away at IMDB's top 100.Charlie Reams wrote:218.

Faves: Life is Beautiful, Life of Brian, The Lives of Others, Pan's Labyrinth, A Separation, Room, It's a wonderful life.
Echo what people are saying about Life is Beautiful, would also recommend Room to anyone who likes Life is Beautiful as both essentially have the same theme (that of a parent experiencing pure hell, protecting their child from that hell).

Yep, about five years ago I'd seen all 250, but they turn over quite rapidly and I haven't kept up. I think Dinos is on 200+ as well.Ryan Taylor wrote:I did wonder if you would have seen most of them as I seem to recall you going through a phase when you were chipping away at IMDB's top 100.Charlie Reams wrote:218.

Of the more recent ones....ie ones Charlie hasn't seen I recommend Whiplash and the Revenant....most of the others are probably based on comic books

Re: IMDB top 250
How many have you seen? - I'll say 59, but it's a bit hazy around the edges.
What are your favourites? - Dunno. I'm disappointed by most films, and I'm not sure I can be bothered to go through the list again. I quite liked Back to the Future and the Toy Story films though.
Least favourites? - Well I don't want to over-commit because of the next question. I'll say any Harry Potter ones, just because once you've read the books, the films are pretty rubbish.
Ones you think are most overrated (without being least favourites)? - Shawshank Redemption. Because it's fucking top. The Dark Knight, any Lord of the Rings, Inception, Fight Club, any Star Wars, Taxi Driver, LA Confidential. And I have to say it - Life of Brian. I actually think it's quite good, but I think people hype it way too much. "Ooh, it got banned so we have to say it's brilliant."
Which one have you watched most recently? - Dunno. The recent Star Wars one?
What's the most obscure one you've seen? - Tough to judge. Rush.
What's the most obvious one you haven't? - Loads of them. The Godfather? Schindler's List? Lion King?

By the way I think a good alternative list would be one that uses some sort of proportional representation. The current list is presumably going to favour films that largely appeal to everyone rather than polarise opinion. A proportional list would be very interesting and the top films of more obscure genres would make the list.

Re: IMDB top 250
Well, it would be the same principle as PR in elections. Normally, when people think of PR, they think in terms of parties and that each party should get seats in proportion to the number of votes they get, but it doesn't have to be defined in terms of parties. Single Transferable Vote doesn't have parties built into the system at all, and works for independent candidates, so would also work for films. But that works on a ranked ballot, where as IMDB uses scores. But there are systems that can use a score ballot including this and this.Charlie Reams wrote:Proportional to what?Gavin Chipper wrote:By the way I think a good alternative list would be one that uses some sort of proportional representation. So in answer to your question "Proportional to what?" - fans of a particular type of film should expect to get their type of film represented in the list in proportion to the number of fans.

Sadly I've not seen any of these. The worst film I've seen is actually rated reasonably highly - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116783/?ref_=nv_sr_2Conor wrote:There is also a list of the Bottom 100 rated films: http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom
I have only seen one - Epic Movie - at it remains the only film where I have walked out of the cinema.
I suppose it's probably well made etc, but by god, what a terrible premise.

If this were really true, it would be ironic when you consider that the central message of Life of Brian is that people should think for themselves and not blindly follow others opinions. Anyone who gets it would surely see that?Gavin Chipper wrote: Life of Brian. but I think people hype it way too much. "Ooh, it got banned so we have to say it's
Also, It absolutely should not have been banned. It is not anti-religion in any way, and frankly even films that are anti-religion shouldn't be banned given that free speech and thinking for yourself are basic human rights.

If you click on the individual genres down the side, you'll find under comedy and drama The Chaos Class, which has a whopping score of 9.5/10 - higher than anything in the main list. Maybe it's something to do with needing a certain number of scores to make the main list. But anyway, maybe this film is actually the greatest of all time, not the Shawshank Redemption with its meagre 9.2/10.
And here it is (in Turkish with English subtitles), under its Turkish name of Hababam Sınıfı.
