Wednesday 29th April 2015 (Series 72, Prelim 75)

Post by James Robinson »

GUESS WHO'S BACK, BABY!!??? Yes, it's been a while, but to make up for it, I'll do be here with a double bill this week. More on that at the end.

But, I'd like to thank James Laverty and Anthony Endsor for doing my recaps while I've been away. ;) :) :D

So, here we go. Enjoy. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Wednesday 29 April 2015.

C1: Champion Simon Tomlinson (2 wins, 161 points.) A mortgage underwriter from Solihull, West Midlands.
C2: Challenger Sue Picken. A retired nurse from Cramlington, Northumberland. She likes going on holiday to Alaska, although she was once forced to stay inside her car when a grizzly bear was outside prowling...... She previously appeared on the show in Series 51, losing her only game. She's also the mother-in-law of fellow forumite Lesley Jeavons. :geek:
DC: Susie Dent and Myleene Klass.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: T I R L E F T O A

Simon: FLOATIER (8)
Sue: FLOATER (7)
DC: TREFOIL (7)
OT: FILTRATE (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

A cruel blow to Sue, who misses sticking the I in her FLOATER........

Round 2: L C X U O D P E S

Simon: CLOUDS (6)
Sue: COUPLED (7)
DC: COUPLES (7)
OT: SCULPED (7)
Score: 8–7 (max 15)

But Sue is undeterred and comes back in with a 7 straight away. :)

To SCULP is to create or represent something by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques.

Round 3: 75, 7, 1, 5, 2, 10. Target: 582.

Simon: 582. ((75 + 5) x 7) + ((10 + 1) x 2) (10)
Sue: 583.
Score: 18–7 (max 25)

This is going half and half scoring wise, as it's Simon's turn to score again, and he gets full marks for his perfect solve here. :D

Teatime teaser: DARKMERE -> REMARKED

Round 4: L V N U I G D E M

Simon: DELVING (7)
Sue: MINGLED (7)
DC: UNLIVED (7)
OT: DIVULGE (7) ELUDING (7) INDULGE (7) MELDING (7)
Score: 25–14 (max 32)

7 7's and both get 7, so I think we're all happy. 8-)

Round 5: T A S N O R S E Q

Simon: REASONS (7)
Sue: SENATORS (8)
DC: TREASONS (8)
OT: ASSENTOR (8) SANTEROS (8)
Score: 25–22 (max 40)

Another good spot by Sue, and it's Simon's turn to kick himself for not adding a letter to his REASONS............

ASSENTOR relates to ASSENT, the expression of approval or agreement.
In Mexico and Spanish-speaking areas of the south-western US, a SANTERO is a person who makes religious images.

Round 6: 25, 8, 6, 5, 5, 3. Target: 350.

Simon: 350. (8 + 6) x 25 (10)
Sue: 350. (8 + 6) x 25 (10)
Score: 35–32 (max 50)

NEXT :!: :!: :!:

Myleene talks more about her holidays in the Maldives, and her father's Royal Navy influences.......

Round 7: B A W M I C G U A

Simon: -
Sue: GUM (3)
DC: MAGIC (5) MACAW (5)
OT: AGAMIC (6) CAMBIA (6) CUMBIA (6) GUAIAC (6)
Score: 35–35 (max 56)

Well, I think that might be a first on the show, a contestant declaring nothing, then the other one scoring just a 3......., but those 3 points put Sue level with Simon, which I'm sure will mean a lot in the long run....... :) Quite a few unusual 6's there too. 8-)

AGAMIC is a biological term meaning asexual or reproducing asexually.
CAMBIUM (plural CAMBIA) is a cellular plant tissue from which phloem, xylem, or cork grows by division, resulting (in woody plants) in secondary thickening.
CUMBIA is a kind of dance music of Colombian origin, similar to salsa.
GUAIAC is brown resin obtained from guaiacum trees, used as a flavouring and in varnishes.

Round 8: S Y S E I J R U M

Simon: misser
Sue: MISERY (6)
DC: SURMISE (7) mussier
OT: MISUSER (7)
Score: 35–41 (max 63)

Simon is a misser, but he can't be, which just puts him in more MISERY, as he is now behind for the first time today..........

Round 9: 2, 7, 4, 1, 5, 6. Target: 297.

Simon: 300.
Sue: 296. (((4 x 7) + 1) x 2 x 5) + 6 (7)
RR: 297. ((7 x 4) - 1) x (6 + 5) (10)
Score: 35–48 (max 73)

The 6 small gamble backfires for Simon, as the deficit is now in double figures.

Teatime teaser: BLOWGEAR -> GROWABLE

Round 10: P T G A I H R O N

Simon: PARTING (7)
Sue: PARTING (7)
DC: HARPING (7)
OT: ORATING (7) PATHING (7) PORANGI (7) PORTING (7) PRATING (7)
Score: 42–55 (max 80)

7 7's and both get 7, so I think we're all happy. 8-) Wait, haven't I said that before...... :? :?: :P

PORANGI is a New Zealand term meaning mad or crazy.
To PRATE is talk foolishly or at tedious length about something.

Round 11: G E T K O L D E A

Simon: GLOATED (7)
Sue: DOTAGE (6)
OT: GOATEED (7)
Score: 49–55 (max 87)

Well, well, well, Simon's not giving up easily, and those 7 points take him back to within 6 of Sue..........

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of "apple of my eye".

Round 12: N S D E A P R I D

Simon: SANDIER (7)
Sue: SPRAINED (8)
DC: SARDINED (8)
Score: 49–63 (max 95)

But, Sue is not letting the pressure get to her, even if she did get SPRAINED in this round. :P

Round 13: T E R N O V H A O

Simon: HOOTER (6)
Sue: HOOTER (6)
DC: ANOTHER (7)
OT: VENATOR (7)
Score: 55–69 (max 102)

Another pair of 6's for the contestants, and ANOTHER for DC.

A VENATOR is an archaic term for a hunter.

Round 14: 50, 4, 9, 3, 3, 7. Target: 487.

Simon: 487. ((50 + 4) x 9) + (3 / 3) (10)
Sue: 487. ((3 + 7) x 50) - 9 - 4 (10)
Score: 65–79 (max 112)

Safe and secure for Sue, who has wrapped up the game with little to no fuss in this round. :)

Round 15: L O V E D D E E P

Simon buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say DEVELOPED which is correct.
Final Score: 75–79 (max 122)

But, it's Simon who has the last word today with that conundrum, meaning he loses by only 4 points............ :(

So, Sue wins and she does it by scoring 1 point less than she did when she was last on 11 years ago :!: :P

Join me tomorrow to see how she does, as Tracey is on her hols, and then it'll be another 3 weeks til my next one, cos of the extended horse racing in the next couple of weeks......... :(

So, catch ya tomorrow. Bye for now. ;) :) :D

Long time replying to this James (I didn’t know the forum still existed until George mentioned on facebook) but just to clear up so you can edit. Sue Picken is my cousin’s step-Mum / my Uncle’s wife. Married to my cousin’s Dad, Charles Picken, another former contestant. Though he’s my Uncle I don’t really know him having only met him and Sue at both my cousins weddings.

Welcome Lesley - it's where all the cool kids and Gevin hang out. ;)

Though if you only just found out about it, I am slightly intrigued where you thought your other 317 posts were made!
