Enjoy the show.

Round 1: L F U H R E I T L

Gerry: FUTILE (6)
Dean: FULLER (6)
DC: HURTLE (6) REFILL (6)
OT: FLUTIER (7) LUTHIER (7) THILLER (7)
Score: 6–6 (max 7)

Its sixes all round in the studio but three pretty obscure sevens were there that no one spots.

Round 2: J K A O T D U P A

Gerry: ADOPT (5)
Dean: POUT (4)
DC: PADOUK (6)
OT: JUDOKA (6) PADAUK (6)
Score: 11–6 (max 13)

Its just a five for Gerry but as his opponent only has four that’s enough for him to get the lead early on.

Round 3: 4, 2, 1, 8, 9, 75. Target: 312.

Gerry: 312. (75+2+1)*4 (10)
Dean: 312. (75*4)+9+1+2 (10)
Score: 21–16 (max 23)

No problems here for either contestant as it’s a simple one.

Teatime teaser: TRODCODE -> DOCTORED

Round 4: D T I E C G O M A

Gerry: DOGMATIC (8)
Dean: COATED (6)
DC: GEOMATIC (8)
Score: 29–16 (max 31)

Impressive from Gerry as he maxes the round with his DOGMATIC spot.

Round 5: N P E A L M I T G

Gerry: LIGAMENT (8)
Dean: metaling
DC: PLEATING (8)
Score: 37–16 (max 39)

There was a time when American spellings were allowed on the show but those days are long gone and Dean’s word required another L to be allowed here.

Round 6: 8, 9, 6, 7, 9, 25. Target: 185.

Gerry: 185. (25*7)+((9-8)+9) (10)
Dean: 185. (25*8)-9-6 (10)
Score: 47–26 (max 49)

Another easy numbers game makes no difference to the points gap.

DC Guest – Janet talks about her hatred of dieting and mentions that if she didn’t play tennis she would be huge.

Round 7: R Z N A E D Q O S

Gerry: REASON (6)
Dean: SNORED (6)
DC: ZANDER (6)
OT: ADORES (6) ADORNS (6) ANODES (6) DENARS (6) DOZENS (6) DOZERS (6) DRONES (6) OREADS (6) ORENDA (6) REDANS (6) RONDES (6) SANDER (6) SNARED (6) SOARED (6)
Score: 53–32 (max 55)

Seventeen sixes available here, would be shocker if anyone didn’t max this round considering the commonness of many of the maxes.

Round 8: R L M E A I T V D

Gerry: TRAILED (7)
Dean: TIRADE (6)
DC: READMIT (7)
OT: MALTIER (7)
Score: 60–32 (max 62)

Rounds like this are good evidence that Dean is not an apterite who plays under a pseudonym.

Round 9: 3, 6, 9, 8, 1, 50. Target: 336.

Gerry: 336. (50-9+1)*8 (10)
Dean: 336. Mistake in working.
Score: 70–32 (max 72)
Three easy numbers games in a row but Dean messes up his method and it would take a miracle for him to still have a chance now.

Teatime teaser: HOLYFUSE -> HOUSEFLY

Round 10: S T R A E U N G O

Gerry: OUTRANGES (18)
Dean: TREASON (7)
Score: 88–32 (max 90)

Gerry says that he’ll “try a nine”, but surely he knew that OUTRANGES was valid, maybe a little kidology there.

Round 11: R W E O P N A R C

Gerry: PRANCER (7)
Dean: PRANCER (7)
DC: CAREWORN (8)
Score: 95–39 (max 98)

Nice to see one of Santa’s reindeer make an appearance.

Round 12: R S V I U E X R I

Gerry: RIVERS (6)
Dean: VIRUS (5)
Score: 101–39 (max 104)

Dean hasn’t shown evidence of being more than a casual fan and his missing of the fairly simple RIVERS means Gerry has confirmed his fifth win.

OoW – Susie talks about the origins of “burning your bridges” and “burning your boats”.

Round 13: S T E O W D A S U
Gerry: STOWED (6)
Dean: SWEATS (6)
Rachel Riley: SAWDUST (7)
Score: 107–45 (max 111)

Today’s numbers games have been simple so there has been no opportunity for Rachel to shine, but she does it here as she is the only one to spot the darrenic max SAWDUST in this round.

Round 14: 5, 9, 3, 3, 10, 100. Target: 959.

Gerry: 959. ((100+5+3)*9)-10-3 (10)
Dean: 959. (100*9)+(10*5)+(3*3) (10)
Score: 117–55 (max 121)

Numbers games today have been complete cakewalks and in this case it gives Gerry a chance to end on a really high score.

Round 15: U N T O N G U E D

Gerry buzzes on 6 seconds to say OUTGUNNED which is correct.
Final Score: 127–55 (max 131)

Gerry spots the conundrum to get his fifth win with his highest score to date. He is probably second favourite to win the series behind Tom Cappleman.

Join James Laverty for his sixth game tomorrow.
