Round 1: R N M I O A R E D
Kevin: MORAINE (7)
Mick: MORAINE (7)
DC: RANDIER (7)
OT: AIRDROME (8) ORDAINER (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)
Nick says both contestants are “players” when they both declare MORAINE, but there were two eights available that go unspotted by the players.
Round 2: K M H A E O S U C
Kevin: MOCHAS (6)
Mick: CHOKES (6)
DC: MOUSE (5) SHAME (5) CHOKES (6)
OT: MUCOSAE (7)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)
Both contestants get six but as in round one both (as well as DC) are one off the max.
Round 3: 8, 5, 7, 4, 9, 75. Target: 593.
Kevin: 593. (75*8)-7 (10)
Mick: 593. (75*8)-7 (10)
Score: 23–23 (max 25)
A numbers game that will annoy James Robinson for being so easy.
Teatime teaser: CLAPNINE -> PINNACLE
Round 4: D S Q I E A B P E
Kevin: BIPEDS (6)
Mick: DEBASE (6)
DC: BESIDE (6) SEABED (6)
OT: ABIDES (6) BEEDIS (6) BIASED (6) ESPIED (6)
Score: 29–29 (max 31)
Nick again says he thinks this is a really good game between two good contestants as they both spot a max word for the first time in the game.
Round 5: G W T U O E B T A
Kevin: TOWAGE (6)
Mick: OUTAGE (6)
DC: TUGBOAT (7)
Score: 35–35 (max 38)
DC beat the contestants for the first time today with the excellent TUGBOAT. The contestants continue to match each other.
Round 6: 8, 3, 25, 50, 100, 75. Target: 820.
Kevin: 819. (((50/25)+100)*8)+3 (7)
Mick: 819. ((100+3)*8)-((75+50)/25) (7)
RR: 819. (7)
OT: 820. (75-3)*((8+(50/25)+100 (10)
Score: 42–42 (max 48)
Mick picks four large, not knowing that Kevin has chosen this combination several times in his games so far. Both do well to get one away. Rachel doesn’t get it either and says “I’ll have another look”, which may be an appropriate title for her autobiography if she ever decides to write one.
DC Guest: Richard talks a bit about his experiences of being a parent and how he left one of his (step) children (Tom) in Death Valley when on holiday there.
Round 7: L P S I A U P E W
Kevin: APPLIES (7)
Mick: PUPILS (6)
DC: SWIPPLE (7)
OT: LAPPIES (7) PAPULES (7)
Score: 49–42 (max 55)
Kevin takes the first lead with that seven.
Round 8: L J N E O I R N S
Kevin: JOINERS (7)
Mick: JOINERS (7)
DC: REJOINS (7)
OT: ONLINERS (8)
Score: 56–49 (max 63)
JOINERS has to be one of the most frequently spotted max on countdown. The excellent ONLINERS is the darrenic max here, a word that I’m sure wasn’t spotted (or even valid) in countdown’s earlier years.
Round 9: 2, 2, 9, 4, 9, 25. Target: 825.
Kevin: 825. (9+2)*(9-4-2)*25 (10)
Mick: 823.
Score: 66–49 (max 73)
One is looking for 33 from all the small numbers here, Kevin gets it and Mick doesn’t and now Kevin is looking good for his sixth win.
Teatime teaser: MANYRIDE -> DAIRYMEN
Round 10: A O E T R T N V O
Kevin: NOVATE (6)
Mick: ROTATE (6)
OT: ROTOVATE (8)
Score: 72–55 (max 81)
Sixes for the contestants, nothing more for DC despite there being sevens and the darrenic eight.
Round 11: D C R I O E L I E
Kevin: RECOILED (8)
Mick: CRIED (5)
DC: RECOILED (8)
Score: 80–55 (max 89)
Kevin seemed to be picking a final vowel for RECOILED so it’s interesting that he said “8, not written down” when he declared. Be interesting to know why he didn’t write it down (my thought was that maybe he worried that his opponent may see his paper, but I am probably way off there).
OoW- Susie talks about the origins of the word FREAK
Round 12: G R N L A U I M N
Kevin: MAULING (7)
Mick: MAULING (7)
OT: MANURING (8) UNARMING (8)
Score: 87–62 (max 97)
I thought of UNARMING in this round but did not think it would be valid.
Round 13: S R G U I O Y D E
Kevin: GOURDES (7)
Mick: GROUSED (7)
DC: SURGED (6) GUIDERS (7) GROUSED (7)
OT: DROGUES (7)
Score: 94–69 (max 104)
Kevin seals the win with GOURDES, Richard Madeley is proud of saying he had GROUSED despite not remembering that Mick had just declared it.
Round 14: 3, 4, 50, 75, 25, 100. Target: 495.
Kevin: 497.
Mick: 496. ((75+50)*4)-(100/25) (7)
RR: 496. (7)
OT: 495. (((100+3)+(50/25))*4)+75 (10)
Score: 94–76 (max 114)
Another four large pick for Mick and this results in him winning his first round of the day just too late. It’s a shame as he is clearly a good player who just had he misfortune of facing Kevin.
Rachel Riley again misses the four large and says…you know what
Round 15: L O N G R I V E T
Kevin buzzes on 4 seconds to say REVOLTING which is correct.
Final Score: 104–76 (max 124)
So, its win number six for Kevin against a pretty decent challenger (for much of the game anyway). Rachel spots the final numbers solution in time to give her solution before the programme ends.
I would be shocked if Kevin doesn’t make octochamp now, James will be here for his octochamp game, and expect a spoiler thread comment from Jojo Apollo congratulating Kevin on “a great set of games there” come Wednesday (well, it wouldn’t be the first time).
Have a great week everyone.

Rachel also gave a solution to the last numbers out of time and it was more intuitive than the one in the recap. (100-4+3)*(50+75)/25=495

the +100 is missing from the second numbers solution

Correct, but unlike the other two this is statement of fact and not something that affects the recap as a whole so no edit is required.Gavin Chipper wrote:Rachel also gave a solution to the last numbers out of time and it was more intuitive than the one in the recap. (100-4+3)*(50+75)/25=495
Also, can I apologize to the entire countdown universe for my shockingly bad mistakes pointed out by Ian and James.

Well, I suppose it's interesting to note these things in the historical record, and it's also useful for threads like this.Andy McGurn wrote:Correct, but unlike the other two this is statement of fact and not something that affects the recap as a whole so no edit is required.Gavin Chipper wrote:Rachel also gave a solution to the last numbers out of time and it was more intuitive than the one in the recap. Ironically, had these things not been noted in the historical record, analyses such as the one in the thread referred to might have had some validity.Gavin Chipper wrote:Well, I suppose it's interesting to note these things in the historical record, and it's also useful for threads like this.

Re: Monday 16th February 2015 (series 72, prelim 31)
I suppose Graeme just slurps the data from the database with a program and the database won't discuss the timing of the solves. But the forum recap is more of a narrative account so I think the more information the better.Clive Brooker wrote:Ironically, had these things not been noted in the historical record, analyses such as the one in the thread referred to might have had some validity.Gavin Chipper wrote:Well, I suppose it's interesting to note these things in the historical record, and it's also useful for threads like this.
