Enjoy the show.
Round 1: T G J O A U R H E
David: OUTRAGE (7)
Steve: OUTRAGE (7)
DC: TOUGHER (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)
A nice max start by both contestants. DC spot the TOUGHER of the two max words available here.
Round 2: D T N S I A O U N
David: UNSAID (6)
Steve: ASTOUND (7)
DC: NATIONS (7)
OT: ANOINTS (7) INDUNAS (7) NONSUIT (7) ONANIST (7)
Score: 7–14 (max 14)
It’s the challenger who takes the first lead of the day as spots one of the six max words. Though David has been considered a weak champion by some, at least two of the maxes here were within his abilities.
An INDUNA (plural INDUNAS) is a Zulu term for a great leader
An ONANIST is a person who masturbates.
Round 3: 4, 8, 7, 9, 3, 75. Target: 937.
David: 936. (75+3)*(4+8) (7)
Steve: 928.
RR: 937. (75-3)*(9+4)-(8-7) (10)
Score: 14–14 (max 24)
David has the edge on the numbers though as his one away restores parity after just one round.
Teatime teaser: MAKESZEE -> KAMEEZES
Round 4: B Y D L E I A D E
David: DEADLY (6)
Steve: BEADILY (7)
DC: DELAYED (7) BELAYED (7)
OT: DYEABLE (7) YIELDED (7)
Score: 14–21 (max 31)
A nice max by the challenger gives Steve his second seven point lead of the game.
Round 5: G R W I E U T N C
David: CREWING (7)
Steve: TUNIC (5)
OT: ERUCTING (8)
Score: 21–21 (max 39)
Its tit for tat at the moment as for the second time in the game, David restores parity immediately after falling seven behind.
Round 6: 10, 7, 6, 3, 100, 75. Target: 963.
David: 962. ((7+6)*75)-(10+3) (7)
Steve: 973.
Martin Lewis: 963. (100+7)*(6+3) (10)
Score: 28–21 (max 49)
David has not been spot on with the numbers today but he’s bee outplaying his opponent on the numerical rounds and with this round takes his first lead of the day. Like all leads so far today, it’s a lead of seven points.
Rachael graciously allows Martin Lewis to take the glory as he provides the solution.
Round 7: L V T A E O N F D
David: NOVATED (7)
Steve: NOVATED (7)
DC: FLAVONE (7)
OT: FLOATED (7) TALONED (7) TENFOLD (7)
Score: 35–28 (max 56)
Steve seems to have some doubts about the validity of NOVATED. If hes done any significant watching of countdown he’d now its in as it’s a very common word on this show.
Round 8: L R N R A E U G A
David: LUNAR (5)
Steve: GRANULAR (8)
Score: 35–36 (max 64)
David is stuck on five as the challenger spots a superb Darrenic max. He has the lead again, albeit only by one point this time.
Round 9: 6, 5, 10, 8, 6, 25. Target: 395.
David: 395. ((10+6)*25)-5 (10)
Steve: 395. ((10+6)*25)-5 (10)
Score: 45–46 (max 74)
No trouble with this easy numbers game as both contestants increase their score by ten points.
Teatime teaser: LENTDAVE -> LEVANTED
Round 10: T P H S E O A I M
David: MOPIEST (7)
Steve: EMPATHS (7)
DC: SHIPMATE (8) APOTHEMS (8)
OT: MATESHIP (8) OPSIMATH (8)
Score: 52–53 (max 82)
Sevens for both contestants ensures the game remains tight. There were four eights available however and DC tell us about two of them.
An OPSIMATH is a person who begins, or continues, to study or learn late in life
Round 11: L S T O A I R C P
David: PLASTIC (7)
Steve: PROSAIC (7)
DC: TROPICAL (8) OPTICALS (8)
OT: APRICOTS (8) CALTROPS (8) CAPITOLS (8)
Score: 59–60 (max 90)
There were several very gettable eights here which most top players would have got. David has been lucky with the draw really, but he can only beat the players he’s up against.
With both players equalling each other again, theres clearly a strong chance of another crucial for David.
CALTROPS are ancient weapons made up of two or more sharp nails.
Round 12: L R S R E E O M N
David: MORSEL (6)
Steve: MORSEL (6)
DC: LEMONS (6) REMORSE (7)
OT: MERLONS (7)
Score: 65–66 (max 97)
That one point gap continues as again both fall one short of the max.
Round 13: K D P E O I V S M
David: POKIES (6)
Steve: IMPOSED (7)
DC: SKIMPED (7)
Score: 65–73 (max 104)
Its another breakaway from the challenger who may be pulling ahead at just the right time. Will he go for a tough pick on the final numbers gamt to try to seal the win?
Round 14: 7, 3, 7, 50, 100, 25. Target: 118.
David: 118. 100+25-7 (10)
Steve: 118. 25-7+100 (10)
Score: 75–83 (max 114)
Steve chooses an Atkins but (doubtless to his dismay) a very simple numbers game comes up meaning he can’t avoid a crucial…
Round 15: P A U L P E T E R
Steve buzzes on 6 seconds to say “No, its not” (EPAULETTE) which is incorrect.
David buzzes on 8 seconds to say PERPETUAL which is correct.
Final Score: 85–83 (max 124)
So once again, David pulls out a close game to take him to five wins. While the odds seem to have been against him there seems like a genuine chance he could become an octochamp now.
And regardless of him not always being the strongest player, it will be quite an achievement if he manages it. I must say, I’m pulling for him to make it now…
Thursday would be his octochamp game if he makes it, join my fellow recappers over the next few days to see how close he can get.
