All discussion relevant to Countdown that is not too spoilerific. New members: come here first to introduce yourself. We don't bite, or at least rarely.

Hello!

I have jumped the gun and posted elsewhere, but I have been 'guided' by Jason to post and say hello.

I am fan but haven't had the best start playing on here...1 out of 17 I think...there are many excuses for this, one of which is I am not as good as I think I am. (and the brackets on the numbers)

I hope to lose to some of you very soon

Welcome to the forum Johnnyb :).

Don't worry about posting elsewhere before posting in the Welcome thread. You feel free to post where you want, when you want :)

Just thought I'd say hello! This looks like a friendly & intelligent forum.

I have barely seen Countdown for years - when did they add in extra rounds? I used to watch after school in the mid 80s, and again when I was supposed to be thesis writing in the mid 90s. Tuned in a couple of weeks ago while convalescing and have enjoyed Kai & Charlie's victories. Plan to keep watching for a while!

I'm rubbish at the game on the whole but it's nice to have somewhere to check words when you think you've beaten both the contestants and dictionary corner.

Welcome Kirsty, wow, you've missed some really good games and players, and now of course all is about to change completely. The change could be for the better, who knows, but I can't imagine anyone being as good Carole on the numbers. I've been thinking about that, couldn't someone come up with a computer programme that works out the numbers accurately?

There have been computer programs that do this for years. Robovord is my favourite example.

http://www.geocities.com/athens/acropol ... ovord.html

But if there was a computer in place of Carol, I think the program would lose a hell of a lot of its character and charm. Having said that, I feel like Stephen Hawking woudl be a great choice for the new Carol. Does that count?

From a technical perspective, by far the best numbers solver is WTP, although it doesn't have quite the homely charm of Robovord. The solver in Apterous is probably one of the fastest around, but there's no way to query it directly.

Hi, just registered, having read as a guest for a week or so (since the first plug on TV).

Been watching Countdown regularly since partway through Des Lynam's year. Usually watch the previous day's episode off the recorder over lunch.

Located in Winchester - greetings to all.

Hi all. Like many, heard of the site after Charlie's first plug, registered a couple of days ago.

Am 27 now and been watching the show for very many years on and off. Quite often I'm good enough but never had the courage to apply to go on 8-)

South Devon at the moment.

As I've been posting to this group for a while, I think I ought to introduce myself - there's a potted biography at
http://www.harlow.libdems.org/news/2007 ... rchive.htm
(with a rather unflattering picture :!: )
In spite of having watched for years, and even spotting the occasional spoiler, Ive never got round to applying, as I'm not sure how I might fare in the studio.
Other interests include cryptic crosswords,(I have won a few prizes from the Guardian & Times) and Scrabble, supporting the local clubs, but not up to tournament standard.
I have been an avid reader of SF for most of my life, so was one of the Guests of Honour at the recent meeting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of founding of the British Science Fiction Association, being one of the few survivors from 1958. :)

Hello from the wilds of East Sussex

Post by Andy Clews »

Hello from a newbie... strangely enough I've only been a regular Countdown viewer since Richard Whiteley passed away, but I now watch a recording almost every day with my early evening cuppa after getting home from work. Hobbies: flat-green bowls (outdoor and indoor), astronomy, motorcycling, not keeping the house tidy and bemoaning the declining standard of the English language in everyday life. Well done to Charlie Reams on becoming an Octochamp.

I look forward to visiting this site and chatting with like minded people. See yer all soon.
