Round 1: V I O E T R N C T

C1: CORNET (6)
C2: COVERT (6)
DC: CONTRIVE (8) CORNETTI (8)
OT: CONTRITE (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)

Both contestants get a six, but there are three eights available, two of which are spotted by DC, including the impressive CORNETTI.

Round 2: K A Y M R U I F G

C1: MURKY (5)
C2: FARM (4)
DC: ARGUFY (6) FIGURA (6)
OT: RAMIFY (6)
Score: 11–6 (max 14)

Graeme takes the lead with MURKY, while DC again spot two of the three maxes, which are sixes this time.

Round 3: 100, 4, 2, 6, 7, 1. Target: 926.

C1: 925. (7 + 2) × 100 + 4 × 6 + 1 (7)
C2: 925. (7 + 2) × 100 + 4 × 6 + 1 (7)
RR: 926. 926 = (100 − 7) × (6 − 1) × 2 − 4 (10)
Score: 18–13 (max 24)

Both contestants are one away, so Rachel shows us how it's done.

Teatime teaser: CHEEKBUS -> BUCKSHEE

Round 4: O H Q E L M R L A

C1: MORAL (5)
C2: MORALE (6)
DC: ARMHOLE (7)
Score: 18–19 (max 31)

Graeme's morale takes a bit of a blow here as Chris takes the lead. DC spot the excellent darrenic seven.

Round 5: P E I E S V L C T

C1: SELECT (6)
C2: VILEST (6)
OT: ECLIPSE (7) EPISTLE (7) PELITES (7) VESICLE (7)
Score: 24–25 (max 38)

Good use of the one-syllable adjective rule sees Chris tie Graeme's six and maintain the one point lead. Four sevens available from this round.

Round 6: 100, 2, 9, 7, 5, 10. Target: 282.

C1: 283. 2 × 100 + 9 × 10 − 7 (7)
C2: -
RR: 282. (10 − 7) × 100 − 2 × 9 (10)
Score: 31–25 (max 48)

Graeme is one away again, and he takes the lead as, unfortunately, Chris can't get close enough. Rachel has the exact solution.

Round 7: R A O I S W P N E

C1: WEAPONS (7)
C2: WEAPONS (7)
DC: SPAWNER (7)
OT: ENWRAPS (7) INWRAPS (7) ORPINES (7) PARISON (7) PERSONA (7) SNOWIER (7) SOAPIER (7)
Score: 38–32 (max 55)

A nice flat round here keeps the contest alive.

Round 8: M S I A D T N S E

C1: MADNESS (7)
C2: MADNESS (7)
DC: MISDATES (8) SANDIEST (8)
OT: DESTAINS (8) MANTISES (8) MATINESS (8) MEDIANTS (8) MINDSETS (8) SIDESMAN (8)
Score: 45–39 (max 63)

Decent seven spot from the two contestants, but DC spot two of the eight eights available.

Round 9: , 100, 2, 5, 2, 9, 10. Target: 349.

C1: 350. Mistake in working.
C2: -
RR: 349. ((9 − 2) × 100 − 2) ÷ (10 ÷ 5) (10)
Score: 45–39 (max 73)

Chris falls short on the numbers for the second time running, and Graeme declares one away for the third time running. But, unfortunately, he's made a mistake and scores no points. Rachel picks up the pieces yet again.

Teatime teaser: ONESURGE -> GENEROUS

Round 10: O A R D S P U I B

C1: BOARDS (6)
C2: UPBRAIDS (8)
Score: 45–47 (max 81)

Fantastic darrenic eight spot from Chris; many top apterites would be chuffed with that. He deservedly takes the lead once more.

Round 11: S E O E D T D H N

C1: HOSTED (6)
C2: ODDEST (6)
DC: DENOTED (7)
OT: DENOTES (7)
Score: 51–53 (max 88)

Chris is using the one-syllable adjective rule well today, and maintains his two point lead. Two similar sevens available here.

Round 12: R S R T U E A N O

C1: SAUNTER (7)
C2: TURNERS (7)
DC: TROUSER (7)
OT: NATURES (7) RANTERS (7) RETURNS (7) ROANEST (7) ROASTER (7) ROUTERS (7) SANTERO (7) SENATOR (7) SERRANO (7) SNORTER (7) SOUTANE (7) TONSURE (7) TOURERS (7) TREASON (7)
Score: 58–60 (max 95)

Another flat round of sevens.

Round 13: G E I E L F T S N

C1: fleetings
C2: FLEETING (8)
DC: FEELINGS (8)
OT: SLEETING (8) STEELING (8)
Score: 58–68 (max 103)

That's very unlucky for Graeme. A bold effort, but unsuccessful this time. Chris's lead now stands at ten points, which could be crucial.

Round 14: 50, 2, 8, 4, 1, 1. Target: 966.

C1: 960. (2 × 50 − 4) × (8 + 1 + 1) (5)
C2: -
RR: 966. (2 + 1) × (8 − 1) × (50 − 4) (10)
Score: 63–68 (max 113)

A tough numbers round stumps Chris, but Graeme can gets six away to take what could be a massive five points. Rachel takes a little extra time, but finds the solution eventually.

So after that numbers round, we have a crucial conundrum, and Graeme won't need to win a tie-break if he can beat his opponent to the conundrum here.

Round 15: S T E A K R I C E

C1 buzzes on 9.75 seconds to say CREAKIEST which is correct.
Final Score: 73–68 (max 123)

Graeme takes the day after a close-fought battle. With three wins under his belt now, he'll be looking to succeed where so many others have failed this series and become the first octochamp. But that could be difficult, with apterite Brett Davids due to appear in the challenger's chair at some point within the next week. Join James tomorrow to see what happens next.
