Spoilers for Tuesday April 9th 2013 (Series 68 Prelim 21)
Giles Hutchings got another very impressive win yesterday, winning by 100 points. Can he keep it going with a 3rd today?

Max game? (I'm guessing not but don't remember him being beaten at all)

Almost Oliver, anybody get NAPROXEN in round 7 (the pannier round).Oliver Garner wrote:Max game? (I'm guessing not but don't remember him being beaten at all)
Awesome game from Giles.
I also noticed HEDARIM (round 11) is in OED only (One to unlearn playing the other game )

Very well played, Giles. I was fairly convinced you had a max game until I saw NAPROXEN (never heard of it). I wouldn't be surprised to see you get one before the end of your run though.

Yeah, was apparently 14 maxes - another awesome performance. Shame it wasn't a final T in the NAPROXEN round or we'd be looking at another max game.
Wonder what Susie thought Giles had in the RTUOFTWIE round, because Giles had (according to Lexplorer) the only 7 letter word.
Maybe OUTFIRE^/OUTWRITE^/TOUTIER^?

Here's how I did against Giles and Zulphi (the show never did a close-up of his name board, so that could be spelt wrong):
R1 - MENACE
R2 - SOAPIER
R3 - On Target (9 x 8 = 17 x 25 = 425 - 2 = 423
R4 - TOEING
R5 - FOGIES
R6 - On Target (7 + 8 = 15 x 50 = 750 + 6 = 756)
R7 - APRON
R8 - GLOATS
R9 - On Target (I had an alternative method to Giles and Zelphi: 7 x 25 = 175. 4 x 6 = 24. 175 + 24 - 2 = 197)
R10 - SUNDAE
R11- MERMAID (I think everyone noticed it. Alternative: HAMMIER)
R12 - TUFTIER
R13 - LOOMED
R14 - On Target - (7 x 50 = 350 + 5 = 355)
Conundrum - Once again, Giles beat me... but I did manage to get it a split second after he buzzed so I'm counting it as ten points against Zulphi.
So had I been facing Giles, I would have lost 119-72 (which I don't consider a bad score considering how on form Giles is). Against Zulphi, I would have won 77-94 after a crucial conundrum.
Right, back to practice.

I think his name was Zulfi Ebrahim. Yeah I noticed too that the camera people didn't show his nameplate fully at the start.Mark Ivey wrote:Here's how I did against Giles and Zulphi
And I was a little annoyed at there being that weird darrenic 8. I think it has come up on apterous for me once last year.

14 maxes and another stupidly quick conundrum solve and another huge score. You could be set to break a few records in your time on the show! Keep it up!

I reckon they'd spelt his name wrong so avoided showing the nameplate close up.Giles wrote:I think his name was Zulfi Ebrahim. Yeah I noticed too that the camera people didn't show his nameplate fully at the start.Mark Ivey wrote:Here's how I did against Giles and Zulphi

Great play Giles. Naturally I'm tempted even at this early stage to mention that if you keep winning with scores like that you could beat Jack Hurst's record, but considering the format change, instead I'll look at a different record. If for all octochamps ever you add up their heat game conundrum solving times (not solving it counts as 30s), the current leader is Harvey Freeman with a total of 26s. So far you're on about 2.5s from three games. Keep it up!
(Honourable mention goes to Innis, who had solved 7/7 in a total of 7.25s but was given this bastard of a conundrum for his 8th game.)

Erm I don't think anyone has noticed this but Zulfi declared PINNER in the NAPROXEN round. Amazingly, PINNER isn't in the ODE. Might need to point that out to the recap writer.

Very well played, Giles! Pinner's probably just up the road from Zulfi - shame Harrow didn't come up, as that's valid! Zulfi played to a decent standard and the fact that it was still a comfortable victory suggests that you shouldn't have too much trouble in reaching octochampdom! 14 maxes with NAPROXEN as the odd one out is outstanding.
Question - are you leaning right over the desk because that's the only position where you can see the in-desk display, or for another reason (concentration or whatever)?

Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U
C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)
Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

Usually when I work at school and stuff I lean forward like that just cos it's my natural position. I can see the display fine from most angles, but I'm that far down because I wanted to make sure I always got the exact letters and numbers down. Plus my eyes may be deteriorating slightly and I need to be closer and squint anyway.Adam Gillard wrote:Question - are you leaning right over the desk because that's the only position where you can see the in-desk display, or for another reason (concentration or whatever)?
I would agree that Zulfi was a good player capable of winning a few games, but alas he came up against an avid Apterite. That did ruin his mood a little and make him a bit grumpy.

I don't think it's good. If it keeps happening it becomes the norm, then it becomes very cheatable against someone who doesn't want to be offensive by asking to see. And you can't say it wouldn't happen - people cheat all the time (ask Corby).Matt Morrison wrote:was on the board as MIERMAID
