Monday 21st January 2013 (30th B'day Champ, Round 1, Game 2)

Post by James Robinson »

So, it's the start of a brilliant new week, and Countdown is now in its new home of MediaCityUK in Salford. Not only that, but the scoreboards and CECIL have had a "Huddersfield Town" makeover and are now blue and white too. 8-)

So, a better standard of technology is up and ready, if only the said football team was like that............. :(

Ah well, never mind, time to get up and go with today's recap. Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: N E D U I X R P W

C1: UNWIRED (7)
C2: UNWIRED (7)
DC: prewind REWIND (6)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Nice and easy darrenic start for our players. Long may it continue. :) Quite like Margaret's idea of a prewind drink though. :P

Round 2: E O A W S V T S G

C1: SWEATS (6)
C2: STOWAGE (7)
DC: stowages
OT: TOWAGES (7)
Score: 7–14 (max 14)

Jon takes the first lead thanks to his STOWAGE, leading to a debate about whether it can be pluralised. Susie is very doubtful, and even though it seems to allow it, I think it's well dubious, so I'm kicking it out.

Round 3: U L L O C E R M O

C1: COLOUR (6)
C2: COOLER (6)
DC: MULLER (6)
OT: MORELLO (7)
Score: 13–20 (max 21)

Cherry, cherry nice darren available there. Yummy in a Black Forest Gateau I'll have you know. :P

Round 4: A I A T D G N S M

C1: masting
C2: masting
DC: masting MAIDANS (7)
OT: AGAINST (7) AGAMIDS (7) MANTIDS (7) SIAMANG (7) STAMINA (7)
Score: 13–20 (max 28)

Oh dear, a triple negative is seen in the studio, as both contestants and Susie all think they're onto a winner. Clearly not.

Round 5: 8, 5, 4, 2, 6, 1. Target: 973.

C1: 972.
C2: 973. (((4 x 5 x 8) + 2) x 6) + 1 (10)
Score: 13–30 (max 38)

In anticipation of a probable 4 large onslaught from Jon later, Kai puts out his preferred selection of 6 small, but unfortunately it backfires and Jon takes the full 10. 8-)

Margaret talks about how our use of paper is rapidly declining thanks to advances in technology and lifestyle.

Teatime teaser: SHESLAPS -> SPLASHES

Round 6: A U E N R C T I R

C1: CERTAIN (7)
C2: ERRATIC (7)
DC: CENTAUR (7) URINATE (7)
OT: CURRANT (7) CURRENT (7) CURTAIN (7) RECRUIT (7) RETRAIN (7) RUNTIER (7) TACRINE (7) TAURINE (7) TERRAIN (7) TRAINER (7) TUNICAE (7) UNCRATE (7)
Score: 20–37 (max 45)

Super flat round appears. Moving on.

TACRINE is a drug that halts or reverses memory loss temporarily in some individuals with Alzheimer's disease, but does not alter the course of the disease.

Round 7: T Q R O I N A E A

C1: AERATION (8)
C2: AERATION (8)
Score: 28–45 (max 53)

Nice simple darren there, although I'm sure that Kai was hoping for a U to come out there...................

Round 8: E O I H Y F S R G

C1: HOSIERY (7)
C2: HOSIERY (7)
DC: FISHERY (7)
OT: FOGEYISH (8)
Score: 35–52 (max 61)

Hmmm, I think we'll leave the HOSIERY alone now..............

Round 9: E S C A N I H D V

C1: echnidas
C2: VANISHED (8)
DC: ECHIDNAS (8)
OT: CAVENDISH (18)
Score: 35–60 (max 79)

Ouch, super unfortunate is Kai here, although in fairness he did admit it himself, as he misspells ECHIDNAS, letting Jon get a lead of a score and a quarter, although there's an amazing wheely good NINE there :!: :!:  :o 8-)

CAVENDISH is tobacco that has been softened, sweetened, and pressed into cakes.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "Black Maria", the old name for a police van.

Round 10: 50, 100, 25, 75, 6, 3. Target: 381.

C1: 381. (3 x 100) + 75 + 6 (10)
C2: 381. (3 x 100) + 75 + 6 (10)
Score: 45–70 (max 89)

And lo and behold, 4 large does appear, but it's pretty straightforward, only beneficial for Jon at this stage. :)

Teatime teaser: NAMENERD -> MANNERED

Round 11: D S L U E I M D O

C1: MODULES (7)
C2: MUDDLES (7)
DC: MUDSLIDE (8)
Me: MEDUSOID (8) 8-)
Score: 52–77 (max 97)

Good 7's from Kai and Jon, but DC get a very good 8, which I thought was 2 words actually, so I'm happy with my 8, which I have the pencil for (as well as the plural too). :ugeek:

Round 12: E A I M R Z T L O

C1: ATOMIZER (8)
C2: MORALIZE (8)
OT: AMORTIZE (8) TRIAZOLE (8)
Score: 60–85 (max 105)

Easy set of 8's there for our champions. :D

Round 13: B E J A U R P D K

C1: PARKED (6)
C2: BURPED (6)
DC: ABJURED (7)
Score: 66–91 (max 112)

So, Jon has BURPED his way to victory, while DC finish off with an impressive 7.

Round 14: 50, 75, 25, 100, 3, 2. Target: 379.

C1: 379. (3 x 100) + 75 + ((50 x 2) / 25) (10)
C2: 379. (3 x 100) + 75 + (50 / 25) + 2 (10)
Score: 76–101 (max 122)

And another 4 large with a similar target, and an equally similar outcome. 8-)

Round 15: G R A B A L I C E

C1 buzzes on 29.5 seconds to say CARBILAGE which is incorrect.
C2 does not buzz.
The answer was ALGEBRAIC.
Final Score: 76–101 (max 132)

So, we head to the conundrum, and with half a second to go, Kai comes out with the "joke answer", leaving Jon with half a second to ponder..............

So, over to the audience (which, we oddly didn't do in the previous 2 Fridays) and a lovely young girl gives us the answer, and it so happens that the lovely young girl happens to be Adam Gillard's sister :!: 8-) She's probably waiting to see her brother try and kick Innis Carson's butt on Friday. :P

So, a fairly comfortable win for Jon in the end. Really, Kai's challenge ended after the mistake with ECHIDNAS in round 9, but it was nice to see him grown up even more since his last appearance in that special with Dinos in 2010. 8-)

We'll see Jon again in 3 weeks time for his Round 2 match, but I'll be back tomorrow with the next match, where we go back in time with a battle of two 9 round contestants, the Series 28 quarter-finalist, Chris Hawkins and the Series 38 quarter-finalist, Jill Bright.

So, until then, bye bye. ;) :) :D

Was very happy to get cavendish. Was even happier when Susie missed it and I looked it up to find it in the dictionary with a lowercase C :D
I would have gone for mortalize in round 12 though, so that put me in my place! Don't see why you can be immortalized, but not mortalized... Fall from grace maybe?

Having watched again today, I got MODULISED in R11, which I don't think was in the dictionary at the time.

And MORTALIZE would be available in R12, meaning a potential ambulance is there were this game to be played under the current dictionary.
