Countdown recap for Tuesday 14 August 2012.

After a brief break, welcome back to a recap made in the United States. Each of the last two times I've done a recap, a person I've recapped has eventually become an octochamp. Can this streak continue with today's recap? We'll find out later on. But for now, today's action:

We begin the show by talking about how China is suddenly getting an interest in British exports, from marmalade to tea to suits, and the U.S.A. is apparently in on the suit matter as well.

C1: Champion Grant Waters (5 wins, 482 points.): An aptoforumite who got his second century in yesterday's game. Can he get another one today, or more importantly, can he get his 6th win regardless?
C2: Challenger Mark Eaton.: A math teacher who is going to be teaching math in Gosport. He is also something of a tennis expert as he is a tennis coach and captain of a tennis club. He once rode a roller coaster to the top of a Las Vegas hotel and is 6' 5". Also, the zoom in on my feed didn't work so I don't know how his last name is spelled, I apologize if I got it wrong. I'll also wait to post the recap in the database until I get that clarification.
DC: Susie Dent and Dave Myers.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: G S T U O A Q E G
R02: R U N F I M E L W
R03: L S N A I E G T O
R04: S H A L U T I M A
R05: 25, 10, 8, 4, 2, 5. Target: 353.
TTT: SHYMINCE - "No puppets, but definitely Sooty and Sweep"
R06: B E Z O S A N V E
R07: R D N R A O I T E
R08: D O R E W I S E J
R09: N T R U I E T O P
R10: 75, 100, 10, 3, 4, 6. Target: 642.
TTT: OVENROLL - "Admire the grass, but it's unrequited"
R11: T C X A I E R M O
R12: S U L I P E T S O
R13: R B T D A O E I P
R14: 100, 5, 2, 4, 6, 10. Target: 882.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: G S T U O A Q E G

C1: OUTAGES (7)
C2: QUEST (5)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

Grant gets things off on the right foot by spotting a Darren with his first go of the letters, unfortunately Mark only could see as much as a five.

Round 2: R U N F I M E L W

C1: refilm x
C2: FLUME (5)
DC: FUMIER (6)
OT: FRENUM (6) IREFUL (6) LIMNER (6) MERLIN (6) MURINE (6)
Score: 7–5 (max 13)

Unfortunately the hopes of a max game with Grant are done as his REFILM is probably not used frequently enough to warrant entry in the dictionary. As a result Mark gets on the board. Only a few sixes available from this bunch.

A FRENUM is a fold of skin or mucous membrane that supports or restricts the movement of a part or organ..
A LIMNER is a painter of ornamental decorations
In this instance, a MERLIN refers to a type of bird.
MURINE refers to a group of Old World rats.

Round 3: L S N A I E G T O

C1: LEGATIONS (18)
C2: STEALING (8)
Score: 25–5 (max 31)

Grant quickly makes up for his previous mistake with a 9, what I believe is his third niner of his run so far. And just like that we're at a 20 point lead.

Round 4: S H A L U T I M A

C1: MALTS (5)
C2: maltish x
DC: ASTHMA (6)
OT: THALAMUS (8)
Score: 30–5 (max 39)

This lead now extends even further as Mark's gamble at an adjective didn't work. The five gives it to Grant here, DC pulled off a 6, however nobody spots the darrenic and biological 8.

Round 5: 25, 10, 8, 4, 2, 5. Target: 353.

C1: 353. 25 x (10+4) + 5 - 2 (10)
C2: 353. 25 x (10+4) + 8 - 5 (10)
Score: 40–15 (max 49)

Two different ways of going about a fairly straightforward numbers game here.

Dave Myers talks a little bit about his background, including how he was a furnaceman, how he went to art school to become a painter, andmore.

Teatime teaser: SHYMINCE -> CHIMNEYS

Round 6: B E Z O S A N V E

C1: OVENS (5)
C2: ABOVE (5)
DC: OBESE (5) BEANOS (6)
OT: EVZONES (7)
Score: 45–20 (max 56)

Just fives for the contestants here, and while BEANOS is a good 6 from the corner, they do not get the seven, which referred at first to mountain units of the Greek Army, but then refer to guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens.

Round 7: R D N R A O I T E

C1: DERATION (8)
C2: RATIONED (8)
OT: ANTERIOR (8) ORDAINER (8) ORDINATE (8)
Score: 53–28 (max 64)

Both contestants are ration-al with their selections here with two good eights, and there were only a few more available.

Round 8: D O R E W I S E J

C1: DOWSER (6)
C2: DOWRIES (7)
DC: WEIRDOS (7)
OT: ROWDIES (7)
Score: 53–35 (max 71)

Mark closes the gap here with a good seven, only a couple others available besides his.

Round 9: N T R U I E T O P

C1: ERUPTION (8)
C2: REPOINT (7)
DC: POUTINE (7)
OT: INPUTTER (8) PRINTOUT (8) RITENUTO (8)
Score: 61–35 (max 79)

But Grant is back on point with a solid 8, and going into the next numbers game his lead is 26.

RITENUTO is a musical term referring to a sudden decrease of tempo.

Susie talks about the origin of Pall Mall and a museum called the Panorama.

Round 10: 75, 100, 10, 3, 4, 6. Target: 642.

C1: 643. (100x6) + (10x4) + 3 (7)
C2: -
RR: 642. (3+4+100) x 6 (10)
Me: 642. (75x10) - 100 - (4x(6/3))
Score: 68–35 (max 89)

Unfortunately the math teacher can't get anything here, perhaps to his benefit Grant can only get 7 out of this, so it's up to Rachel to save the day.

Teatime teaser: OVENROLL -> LOVELORN

Round 11: T C X A I E R M O

C1: RATIO (5)
C2: coater x
DC: COAXER (6) EROTICA (7) EXOTICA (7)
OT: TOXAEMIC (8)
Score: 73–35 (max 97)

The curse of the agent nouns strikes again, as there is no such word as a coater. Susie thought Mark was going to say COAXER which is in, and the corner gets a little sexual with their selections. However there is a darren available that is not quite sexual.

Round 12: S U L I P E T S O

C1: PISTOLS (7)
C2: oiliest x
DC: SOUPIEST (8) LOUSIEST (8) PISTOLES (8)
OT: STIPULES (8)
Score: 80–35 (max 105)

Mark has not been having a good round, as he decided to double the I. Grant is a bit unlucky as well as he could have put an E in his word to improve it slightly, regardless he clinches his 6th win here and has a chance at a century for sure now.

In botany, STIPULES are outgrowths borne on either side of the base of a leafstalk.

Round 13: R B T D A O E I P

C1: PROBATE (7)
C2: PIRATED (7)
DC: ABORTED (7) PROBATED (8)
Score: 87–42 (max 113)

Good sevens from both, unfortunately Grant caught more bad luck as he could have stuck the D at the end of PROBATE to have a darren. The good news is if Grant does well in the last two rounds he can set a new personal best on the show.

Round 14: 100, 5, 2, 4, 6, 10. Target: 882.

C1: 881.
C2: 882. 100 x (4+5) - (10+6+2) (10)
Me: 882. (100-2) x (5+4)
Score: 87–52 (max 123)

Unfortunately that won't be happening for Grant, as the math teacher gets his redemption from the last numbers game here.

Round 15: D E M O T E I N N

C2 buzzes on 7 seconds to say MENTIONED which is correct.
Final Score: 87–62 (max 133)

And Mark has a bit of a late rally as he takes the conundrum from Grant. However Grant still was strong throughout and now has 6 wins under his belt. Hopefully he can become the third octochamp of the series. We end the show by talking about weight loss as discussed earlier with Dave Myers' diet. Rachel wants to try to give that book to her cat. No clue if it will be helpful. And that's the recap for today, and my last recap before the summer hiatus. With any luck I'll be back in the fall for more Tuesday recaps. Until then, good afternoons.
