Friday 22th June 2012 (Series 66, QF2)

Post by Thomas Carey »

It's the second quarter final and it's #2 seed Jack Worsley against #7 seed Mark Murphy. Here's your Careycap and for once it's not absurdly late.

Countdown recap for Friday 22 June 2012.

C1: Champion Mark 'The Edinburgh Extravagant' Murphy (5 wins, 454 points.) A 5-time winner back in January who famously played the word WANKER, he lost his fifth game to Sri Gutta.
C2: Champion Jack 'The Blackpool Bazooka' Worsley (8 wins, 824 points.) If you aren't an aptoforumite (yes, other people read these too) then you're probably thinking 'Who the hell is he?'. Back in Series 65, on Jeff's last preliminary show, Jack beat 6-time winner Phyl Styles with a score of 103-39 to continue his run into the era of Nick. He won the first game with Nick in the presenter's chair, and then won 6 more to octochampify himself. He was top seed from before the series started right until the last prelim, where Jonathon Rawlinson took over. But enough about Jack, let's get on with the game.
DC: Susie Dent and Penny Smith.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Tomorrow is the 21st anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, says Nick.

Also, WHY DOES NICK PUT THE CHAIRS THE WRONG WAY ROUND?!!? IT MAKES NO SENSE! :x

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: P N T O A O S R A

C1: AORTAS (6)
C2: PATROONS (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

Jack takes the lead straightaway with that brilliant darren.

Round 2: T Q S L E O E T B

C1: BOTTLES (7)
C2: BOTTLES (7)
DC: BELTS (5) SETTLE (6) OBESE (5) SLOB
OT: BOLETES (7) TELEOST (7)
Score: 7–15 (max 15)

Both find BOTTLES while DC just get a load of random stuff.

Round 3: X T D G I U A R O

C1: GUARD (5)
C2: AUDITOR (7)
DC: GOT (3) RID (3) dragit TURDIG (6) GUITAR (6)
Score: 7–22 (max 22)

More DC randomness as Jack gets another darren.

Round 4: M B S M A E U V T

C1: MAUVES (6)
C2: BEAUTS (6)
OT: MAUVEST (7)
Score: 13–28 (max 29)

Mark might be kicking himself for not putting the T on the end of MAUVES - but then DC didn't spot it either!

Round 5: 50, 100, 7, 8, 10, 4. Target: 152.

C1: 152. 10-8+100+50 (10)
C2: 152. 100+50+(8/4) (10)
Score: 23–38 (max 39)

Easy.

Teatime teaser: ISNTEVER -> NERVIEST

Round 6: G P N R E A E Y A

C1: rangey
C2: ENRAGE (6)
DC: GRAPEY (6)
OT: PERGANA (7)
Score: 23–44 (max 46)

Jack's lead is now 21 thanks to Mark's dodgy offering.

Round 7: D Z N U I O J N A

C1: anoid
C2: ADJOIN (6)
DC: ANION (5)
OT: INDUNA (6) UNJOIN (6)
Score: 23–50 (max 52)

More dodgy Mark words, but this time it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Round 8: S L K L I O E R W

C1: KILLERS (7)
C2: SKILL (5)
DC: LOWLIER (7)
OT: RESKILL (7) SWILLER (7)
Score: 30–50 (max 59)

Mark takes some points back where Jack surprisingly only finds a five.

Round 9: R T M I U A G W T

C1: WARM (4)
C2: ATRIUM (6)
DC: GUITAR (6)
Score: 30–56 (max 65)

DC have had GUITAR twice this episode, and this time it's a max.

Round 10: 75, 100, 50, 25, 1, 6. Target: 968.

C1: -
C2: 969. (100+50-1)*6+75 (7)
Score: 30–63 (max 72)

One away is the best you can get and, although there is an easier solution (work it out if you wish), Jack maxes this.

Teatime teaser: IRONYARD -> ORDINARY

C1: SHOES (5)
C2: SHONE (5)
DC: SHOES (5) HONES (5) FOEHNS (6)
OT: ONENESS (7)
Score: 35–68 (max 79)

Blarggggggggggggggggggggh.

Round 12: L R D C I O E N O

C1: COILED (6)
C2: EIDOLON (7)
DC: CROONED (7)
OT: CONDOLE (7) LOONIER (7) ORCINOL (7)
Score: 35–75 (max 86)

JACK HAS WON!

Aptofavourite EIDOLON gets used on the show to secure Jack a place in the semifinals against the winner of Peter-Victoria.

Round 13: T C P F E A I S A

C1: PACIEST (7)
C2: PASTIE (6)
DC: FACETS (6) FASCIA (6)
OT: ASEPTIC (7) FASCIAE (7)
Score: 42–75 (max 93)

Mark gets an APICES stem which beats Jack, while DC don't put an E on the end of their word.

Round 14: 50, 1, 5, 6, 2, 5. Target: 458.

C1: 458. (5+5-1)*50+8 (10)
C2: 458. Mistake in working. (50-5)*6...fail.
Score: 52–75 (max 103)

Had Jack not definitely won 2 rounds ago you might think Mark is making a comeback! At least this isn't as one sided as most 2v7 games (cough cough splutter cough graemeversusnikkioredwardvsandrewjusttonametwoofmany cough cough). Ouch, my throat hurts.

Round 15: I V E F L A R E S

No one buzzes. The answer was LIFESAVER.
Final Score: 52–75 (max 113)

Jack wins. He'll play the winner of Peter Lee and Victoria James on Thursday, while I'll be back on Friday to recap the grand final  before going to COHUD.

Finals timetable:

Monday (QF3): Peter Lee vs Victoria James
Tuesday (QF4): Suzi Purcell vs Nick Hall
Wednesday (SF1): Jonathan Rawlinson vs QF4 winner
Thursday (SF2): Jack Worsley vs QF3 winner
Friday (GRAND FINAL): SF1 winner vs SF2 winner

Score: 52-75
Raw: 73-85
Maxes: 5-8

I haven't had the courage to watch it back, so I'm not sure about the ONENESS round. However, in round 4, I can confidently say I declared BEAUTS, not MAUVES.
