Any recaps from older series should be posted here. This forum is unlikely to contain spoilers, but recaps may contain "forward references" if they are written much later, so approach with caution.

Friday 10 June 1983 (Series 2, QP1)

Post by Mike Brown »

Countdown recap for Friday 10 June 1983 (Series 2, QP1).

C1: #Seed 1 Russell Byers (4 wins, 207 points.)
C2: #Seed 16 David Myerscough (0 wins, 0 points.)
DC: Gyles Brandreth.
OT: Other words or solutions.

The first qualifying prelim of the series and also the first game to feature the new rules: 18 points for a nine-letter word and needing to get within ten to score on the numbers game.

The seedings for this series appear to be based on a combination of most wins, average winning score and some kind of tweaking based on other knowledge (like Scrabble skill level, perhaps). David was seeded 16th as he was the highest-scoring loser of the series (two contestants who won a game didn’t return for the finals: Geoffrey Weeks and Hugh Fraser).

The answer was VEGETABLE.
Score: 54–39 (max 67)

My notes from the time refer to Russell getting a conundrum in 1 second, but unfortunately I'm not sure if it refers to this programme or one of his previous conquests.

All words not in the COD7 have been excluded from this recap.
