Hi guys. When Octorock came out back in July I had this idea for a tournament. It needs 18 people (I'll probably sign up myself, but I won't get very far) and games are across all 25 variants (we currently have 23 so must wait a bit).
Seedings will be Pro Rank on the Monday after Variant 25 comes out, which will also be when the tourney starts. In the first round, the 18 people are divided into 6 groups of 3. They will play both others in their group in a 9 rounder in a specified variant.
Then, the winners of each group will be divided into 2 more groups of 3 and again will play both others in their group in a specified variant 9 rounder.
The winners of those 2 groups will play each other in a standard 9 - the final. Dates will be confirmed once Variant 25 is out.
These are the groups (#3 means third pro rank out of the people playing):
Group A
#1 vs #7 - (Variant 25) 9
#13 vs #1 - Spoilage 9
#7 vs #13 - Hypertouch 9
Group B
#2 vs #8 - Octolock 9
#14 vs #2 - Aegilops 9
#8 vs #14 - Touchdown 9
Group C
#3 vs #9 - Octorock 9
#15 vs #3 - Nasty 9
#9 vs #15 - Unlimited Junior 9
Group D
#4 vs #10 - Lockdown Junior 9
#16 vs #4 - Dogfight 9
#10 vs #16 - Goatdown Junior 9
Group E
#5 vs #11 - Hyperlock 9
#17 vs #5 - Omelette 9
#11 vs #17 - Junior 9
Group F
#6 vs #12 - Lockdown 9
#18 vs #6 - Touchdown Junior 9
#12 vs #18 - Hyper Unlimited 9
Group G
Winner A vs Winner C - Unlimited 9
Winner E vs Winner A - Blind 9
Winner C vs Winner E - Goatdown 9
Group H
Winner B vs Winner D - Goatblind 9
Winner F vs Winner B - Hypergoat 9
Winner D vs Winner F - Hyper 9
FINAL
Winner G vs Winner H - Standard 9
So, it will probably be a few months until it starts, but as there are only 18 places, get signing up!
Thomas
P.S. This hasn't been approved yet. I won't use the tournament system though for obvious reasons.

Hmm, this format gives a huge bias to whoever ends up with variants they're good at and vice versa. I'd hope, in such a tournament, that everyone would play each variant.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be good if everyone had to play 25 games, would it? I've tried to group them so that each group contains different style variants, though.Ian Volante wrote:Hmm, this format gives a huge bias to whoever ends up with variants they're good at and vice versa. Re: All-variant tourney idea
Ok, Variant 24 (Octolock) is out, and we have a grand total of... 1 entrant.
What I want to know from you guys is how could this tourney be improved? I know people have mentioned bias to people with variants they're good at and things, but I've tried to make all the combinations of the 2 first round variants as different as possible from the other one. Besides, it would not be that good having to play 24 games.
Suggestions please.
