Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Main Event Flight A:
Lloyd Pettet v. Lesley Hines appeared to have not happened, so I've scored that as a 0-0 draw.
Matt Morrison v. Jeff(rey) Burgin also appears to have not happened. Even with 5 Jeff(rey) Burgins on the site, none of them appeared to have been very active over the last week so I have scored it as a loss by forfeit. Yes, Matt, that does mean you have 1.5 points without having played any games yet. I have made every effort to pair you off this week with someone who will actually play the games.
Junior Mint:
Neither Edward McCullagh nor Tom Barnes appears to be able to count to two, so I've scored that match as a 1-0 win (since that's what the game worked out as).
Based on the post here yesterday, Andrew Feist v. Dinos Sfyris will happen later today. However since there will be nine 2-0 players, I've paired us both up in the winning group, since somebody was going to have to be the sacrificial 1-1 player to "play up", so those pairings are good as they stand.
I've done the same thing for similar reasons for Tom Chafer-Cook vs. Dan Seasmith, so that game had better happen too.
Speed Demon:
This is the last week, so essentially your task is to play everybody in your pool you haven't yet played. Unless I've missed a bunch of games, that means there needs to be a big pickup in Pool Orange (Bentley/Carson/Hall/Robinson/Rowell/Volante) and Pool Blue (Binnie/Hares/Herbertson/Laddiman/Nussbaum/Sfyris). People have asked about ties here. The tiebreaker mechanism will break any two-way ties. Three-way ties may or may not get broken; if they do then there we go. I don't want to introduce points as an actual tiebreaker if I can help it. Since we have a "break" at this very opportune time, I may ask you to play some tiebreaker games. (Rather than all-play-all I would use points to seed and then do a ladder.) If you are involved, then I will let you know soonest.

I thought this was a bit harsh since both of them did try to arrange a time to play:Andrew Feist wrote: Matt Morrison v. Jeff(rey) Burgin also appears to have not happened. Then from this chat log 'Jeff Burgin' turns up at 21:12 and stays until around 21:35 and Matt had left apterous at 19:25.Facebook - Thursday 9th December 2010 wrote:Matt Morrison: JB it's me and you on apterous this week - you around tonight?
Jeffrey Burgin: Yeah should be, say around 9ish?
Matt Morrison: sounds good, i'll do my best to be there
This is probably the most cuntish thing I have EVER done.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Yeah you're right Ryan. You're an absolute fucking cunt but you're right.
Please mark it down as a loss for me this time Feist. I had no plans but then meeting up unexpectedly with girlfriend greater than symbol apterous it seems. (Note, I did forget though - didn't deliberately decide to not bother.)
No big issue of course as I'd lose all these games anyway so I don't mind conceding them.
Keep me and Tom as a draw though, even though by Ryan Taylor's Cunt Factor I made an effort to arrange a time and never heard back!
But yeah, eternal apologies. You know I've always been super organised and reliable with these things before

Championship Flight
Marcus Hares 2 - 1 James Robinson
Marcus Hares 93-72 James Robinson
James Robinson 99-66 Marcus Hares
Marcus Hares 101-98 James Robinson
Agreed by us both that the first 2 games were shocking, but the final was certainly a classic.
Well done, Marcus.

I did actually post this one, in the round 1 thread (as it was a round 1 game but played late) but did wonder if I'd put it in the right place. Oops.tomrowell wrote:Jim and I played last week i forgot to post

However, I did completely forget to post this absolute thrashing at the hands of Innis, also from the Speed Demon:
Innis Carson 113 - 56 Jim Bentley
Innis was (for him) on fairly tame form and he still scored more than twice as many as me. No, I can't imagine why I forgot to post that one.

Was going to say, this seemed harsh considering I was on from '9ish' on the day we had agreed, and have regularly popped in on other days playing numerous matches. Can we not just have an extension, I'm sure we'll both be in chat at some point soon?Andrew Feist wrote:Main Event Flight A:

So obviously this is what I get for trying to cheat by not reading the chat logs.
I have removed the LF/WF designation for round 2, and switched the two of yours pairings (so now its Burgin v. Tassier and Morrison v. Lee) to reflect the updated situation. (Apologies if you had already started setting up these matches.) If you guys can play soon, then I'll take that result, otherwise I'll take Matt's concession.
And I will definitely do more due diligence in the future. Apologies again.

Me 2 - 1 Kai in some junior mini tot madness
Kai 107 - 83 Dinos
Dinos 109 - 98 Kai
Kai 98 - 99 Dinos
Lots of missed 7s in the first one. Just as well the last one wasn't crucial as the lag was pretty bad.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Speed Demon
Innis Carson 84-81 James Robinson
A very close game after Innis had pulled away early on. After getting MIDIRONS I got myself back in it, and after getting the full 10 on the last numbers it all went down to the conundrum.
Innis buzzed in with 0.4 secs to go, with an incorrect answer. I actually thouht I buzzed in at around the same time, so expected the screen to let me have my go, as it does sometimes. As it was it didn't, and my guess turned out to be the right answer. I obviously don't expect anyone to believe that, but that's the truth, so was disappointed, but in fairness, it would've been an injustice if I'd won that game.
So, well done, Innis.

Liam Tiernan 87-83 Peter Lee
Snatched on a crucial.
Peter Lee 98-37 Liam Tiernan
13 maxes from Peter.
Liam Tiernan 105-66 Peter Lee
Rd 6 had a single 2-letter max. Very unusual.

Inconsistent from both of us. Thought it was going to be decided on a crucial when I realised I'd missed an easy last numbers solution, but fortunately for me Jeff had overlooked it too.
Cheers for the games, Jeff.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Junior Mint: Adam Gillard 1-2 Ryan Taylor
Adam Gillard 79 - 63 Ryan Taylor
I pulled ahead by virtue of being BOOKSY (pencil), but Ryan's RECTUM got him back in it before I SCAMMED the crucial conundrum.
Ryan Taylor 99 - 91 Adam Gillard
I beat Ryan with JUDO but he fought back with KARATE. I pulled 12 points clear with ETERNAL but then immediately fluffed a numbers round. We both continued PLYING (pencil) our trade until the crucial conundrum, which Ryan SOMEHOW spotted before me (in 0.8s).
Adam Gillard 80 - 96 Ryan Taylor
Ryan made a couple of SUPERB spots including GLIOMA and had a 16-point lead going into the final numbers game, which was so easy that I knew he'd get it and proceeded to embarrass myself by trying to do a round-the-houses solution and failing. I got the consolation conundrum.
Overall this was a decent match; the second game in particular was a good'un.
Main Event: Ryan Taylor 1-2 Adam Gillard
Being separated by a single point in this week's Pro Ranks, there was a little extra riding on this match.
Ryan Taylor 82 - 98 Adam Gillard
A decent enough game with just a couple of poor rounds from each of us. I got the crucial conundrum (PROPSHAFT) in 1.2s as Ryan had buzzed in with shaftprop* on 0.9s (but didn't actually declare anything).
Adam Gillard 52 - 89 Ryan Taylor
Ryan raced to a 20-point lead through ESCARGOT and IMAGOS (and some rubbish from me). This lead was extended through the final numbers game and a good conundrum solve (COHERENCY in 3.5s). The last 2 numbers games were tricky, which accounts in part for the low scoring overall.
Ryan Taylor 72 - 79 Adam Gillard
It seemed that only one of us could spot a max at a time, which resulted in the lead changing hands several times until Ryan's overclaim* in the final letters round meant that his excellent conundrum solve (COUPLEDOM in 5.4s) was just a consolation. A good old topsy-turvy game though.
It was fitting that both matches went to a decider; we were pretty evenly-matched throughout. Thanks for the games Ryan.

A surprise result as Liam had some lousy luck with a couple of misdeclarations but enjoyed all three, thanks.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Flight A:
Excellent start, although standards slipped as we progressed:
Dan Seasmith 109 - 85 Ian Volante
Second game, and I came through a very scrappy affair:
Ian Volante 62 - 54 Dan Seasmith
In the decider, neither of us were at our best until I ran away with a couple of nice maxes late on:
Dan Seasmith 79 - 91 Ian Volante
Thanks Dan!

Aplogies to all.
I'm not going to be continuing in this competition. Apologies particularly to James, who I'm due to play later today, and to Andrew who's organising it.

Flight B
Andrew Herbertson 82-78 James Bradley http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=362371
Andrew Herbertson 69-81 James Bradley http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=362364
Andrew Herbertson 90-84 James Bradley http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=362371
Three great games the last one going to a crucial conundrum, a draw would have been a fair result.

I've been trying to catch Doddy and sent aptoemails and so forth but he's been conspicuous by his absence the past few days. Will keep trying.

Winter Open:
Kai Laddiman 110 - 70 James Doohan
Kai Laddiman 104 - 69 James Doohan
Annoyingly close to my first ever max game in that second game.
Cheers James.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Junior: Innis Carson 2-0 Matthew Tassier
Matthew Tassier 88 - 115 Innis Carson
Innis Carson 109 - 71 Matthew Tassier
A double figure deficit within the first 3 rounds against Innis meant game over in both games when they had hardly begun. PISTEUR and SOLFEGE were both impressive and new to me.

I usually bump into Peter Lee with almost daily regularity, so left it to happen naturally for the first part of the week and it never materialised.
So I sent him aptomail a couple of days ago (Thursday or Friday, can't remember) and haven't heard back yet.

Seems that sort of message makes some trigger amongst the timing gods in the sky, met up by random circumstance this afternoon and got it done:Matt Morrison wrote:I usually bump into Peter Lee with almost daily regularity, so left it to happen naturally for the first part of the week and it never materialised.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Round 3
Haven't been able to play Dan Seasmith in the Junior. Aptomailed him on Thurs but no reply. Maybe he's on holiday or something, as Scott hasn't seen him either, and he's on more often than I am. Will keep looking.
