Post by James Robinson »

So, it's a "new week", and after a brilliant "previous" week, I think I can say on behalf of all of us, that we'd like to see Eileen become an octochamp on Monday, but she still has 3 games to win first.

Let's see if she can do it. Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Thursday 2 May 2013.

Round 1: A U A B K M S I E

C1: SAMBA (5)
C2: BAKES (5)
DC: MUSE (4) IAMBUS (6)
OT: AKEBIAS (7)
Score: 5–5 (max 7)

A nasty selection to start the day, but at least we get to see Eileen doing a SAMBA while Neil BAKES us something. :P

Round 2: D N L O E U G T I

C1: LOUNGED (7)
C2: OUTLINED (8)
DC: TINGLED (7)
OT: LONGITUDE (18)
Score: 5–13 (max 25)

Neil takes the first lead, clearly he has OUTLINED his credentials with that, but there was a 9 lurking around. 8-)

Round 3: 25, 10, 8, 10, 7, 3. Target: 199.

C1: 199. (8 x 25) - (10 / 10) (10)
C2: 199. (8 x 25) - (10 / 10) (10)
Score: 15–23 (max 35)

Nice and simple numbers to begin today. :)

Teatime teaser: TRYHORSE -> HERSTORY

Round 4: P R T O A E O X N

C1: PROTEAN (7)
C2: PRONATE (7)
DC: OPERANT (7)
OT: PATROON (7)
Score: 22–30 (max 42)

The contestants and DC get anagrams of each others' words, even though Eileen thought she made hers up!! :P

A PATROON is a person who held an estate in land with certain manorial privileges granted under the old Dutch governments of New York and New Jersey.

Round 5: A E O R S R N C G

C1: CORNEAS (7)
C2: CORNERS (7)
DC: CARGOES (7) RANGERS (7) ORANGES (7) GROANERS (8)
Score: 29–37 (max 50)

7's all round, apart from the darrenic 8 offered by DC, which as Gyles himself says is what many people do when they hear that he's in DC. :P

Round 6: 75, 25, 4, 10, 5, 10. Target: 545.

C1: 545. ((75 - 25) x 10) + (4 x 10) + 5 (10)
C2: 546.
Score: 39–37 (max 60)

Eileen take the lead for the first time with this good numbers solve. 8-)

Gyles talks about why he doesn't wear spectacles any more. :P

Round 7: U I E F T D V Y I

C1: FETID (5)
C2: DEITY (5)
DC: EDIFY (5)
OT: DEIFY (5) DUVET (5) IVIED (5)
Score: 44–42 (max 65)

Just a few 5's in this one............

IVIED is an adjective meaning covered or overgrown with ivy.

Round 8: M T M C E O A E P

C1: POMACE (6)
C2: COMPETE (7)
DC: POEM (4) CAMEO (5)
Score: 44–49 (max 72)

But, Neil has retaken the lead, proving that he's more than here to COMPETE. 8-)

Round 9: 50, 10, 8, 9, 5, 3. Target: 321.

C1: 320. ((10 + 50) x 5) + 3 + 9 + 8 (7)
C2: 322. (5 x 50) + (9 x 8) (7)
RR: 321. ((50 - 9) x 8) - (10 - 3) (10)
Score: 51–56 (max 82)

Well, well, well, a bit of a turn up for the books, as both contestants get one away, while Rachel needs the break to solve it :!: :!:   :o :o

Teatime teaser: DIRESINS -> INSIDERS

Round 10: F R S J I E N S A

C1: FAIRNESS (8)
C2: FAIRS (5)
DC: SANSERIF (8)
Score: 59–56 (max 90)

In FAIRNESS, we probably saw it coming that Eileen would suddenly pounce with a brilliant word, but it was slightly surprising that Neil had FAIRS, but he did say he was "sticking with 5", but surely it wasn't FAIRNESS in his head............

Round 11: O I E T L S R T W

C1: TRIOLETS (8)
C2: WITTERS (7)
OT: SWOTTIER (8) WRISTLET (8)
Score: 67–56 (max 98)

And then in quick succession, another almighty 8 :!: :!: :!:    :o :o :o 8-) 8-) 8-) How many more times are we gonna marvel in this woman's magnificence :?: :?: :?: :? :? :?

Susie's Origins Of Words gives some nautical definitions of "dogsbody", "no room to swing a cat" and "hanging".

Weirdly, just as Nick is about to hit the button to start the clock, the selection from round 2 appears on screen. :P

Round 12: Q R T A D Z B E I

C1: BAITED (6)
C2: braized
DC: BRAZED (6)
OT: TRIBADE (7)
Score: 73–56 (max 105)

Oh dear, Neil tries to regain some ground with a 7, but unfortunately he add the unnecessary I to fall further behind.

Round 13: U E A G S M H R E

C1: GUSHER (6)
C2: MASHER (6)
DC: MEASURE (7)
OT: MAHSEER (7) MEAGRES (7) MESHUGA (7) REMUAGE (7)
Score: 79–62 (max 112)

A few MEASUREs taken by DC, but it's 6's all round for the contestants, but the game's not up yet.

A MAHSEER is any of various large freshwater Indian cyprinid fishes, such as Barbus tor.
MESHUGA is an adjective meaning crazy or insane.

Round 14: 25, 75, 100, 4, 9, 3. Target: 625.

C1: 625. (100 - 75) x 25 (10)
C2: 625. ((9 - (4 - 3)) x 75) + 25 (10)
Score: 89–72 (max 122)

Neil goes for Eileen's tactic from her first show, but unfortunately for him, it's a fairly simple numbers, which gives her win #6 under her belt, and the possibility of another 99 too. 8-)

Round 15: T H O R N G I F T

C1 buzzes on 7.75 seconds to say FORTNIGHT which is correct.
Final Score: 99–72 (max 132)

And there you go, 5 conundrums out of 6 for Eileen and her 6th win keeps her 3rd place on the table secure for now. :D

A bit of a shame that Neil had to be up against Eileen, as he was clearly a very decent player as well, and could've won a few in his own right too. 8-)

So, hopefully Eileen will be an octochamp on Monday, but because of horse racing and my next impending holiday, my next recap will more than likely be in 5 weeks time on June 5.

So, I'll see you all soon. Till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D  8-)
