Countdown recap for Wednesday 20 March 2013.

Hello there! With James being away he has kindly let me do the recap for Wednesday 20th and you never know this might not be my only recap either.

With Andy debuting yesterday with a great score of 114, I was keen to see how this one would turn out to see if he could keep up the momentum from yesterday.

C2: Challenger John Wiseman. John is a Business Development manager at a community centre in Consett, County Durham and is currently learning to play an Irish drum called the Boran

DC: Susie Dent and John Culshaw.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: S H R M A U I A S

C1: SAMURAI (7)
C2: HAIRS (5)
DC: -
OT: MUSHAIRAS (18)
Score: 7–0 (max 18)

A good start for Andy with a good spot!

Round 2: Z R L E R G A I N

C1: GLAZIER (7)
C2: learing
DC: GNARLIER (8)
Score: 14–0 (max 26)

Andy doubles his lead early on whilst DC come up with the beater GNARLIER

Round 3: D C N F E U O G E

C1: CONGEE (6)
C2: ounced
DC: FECUND (6)
OT: DENGUE (6) ENCODE (6) FENCED (6) FONDUE (6)
Score: 20–0 (max 32)

Unlucky for John as OUNCE is only listed as a noun. Several other sixes, but nothing bigger.

Round 4: T E Q E S N U I E

C1: QUEENIEST (18)
C2: QUEENIES (8)
Score: 38–0 (max 50)

Yet more brilliance from Andy as he gets his second 9 in as many days and looks like he could be on his way to a big score again.

Round 5: 75, 25, 100, 50, 4, 4. Target: 490.

C1: 491. (100 + 4) × 4 + 75 (7)
C2: 494.
RR: 491. (7)
Score: 45–0 (max 57)

An unsolvable numbers game which Andy gets one away from leaves him in a very comfortable position whilst John is still yet to break his duck.

Teatime teaser: STINGIER -> IGNITERS

Round 6: Y A H R E C O E T

C1: TEACHER (7)
C2: HEARTY (6)
DC: CHEATER, (7) HECTARE (7)
OT: CHAYOTE (7) CHEATER (7) OCHREAE (7) RETEACH (7) TROCHEE (7)
Score: 52–0 (max 64)

Lots and lots of sevens but nothing more

Round 7: G L S W A A O U T

C1: OUTLAWS (7)
C2: GLOATS (6)
Score: 59–0 (max 71)

Another good spot with OUTLAWS. I always find OUTLAW(S) a tough word to spot though I did get it this time (no doubt helped by the last 3 letters)

Round 8: E I G V A P N R E

C1: VINEGAR (7)
C2: PEERING (7)
DC: GRAPEVINE (18)
Score: 66–7 (max 89)

Pleased to see John get off the mark finally as both contestants score 7's. DC however come up with the brilliant GRAPEVINE for 9! Must admit I was disappointed not to spot GRAPEVINE as I remember it was the answer to the first ever conundrum I got once upon a time.

Round 9: T C P T E O I L U

C1: OCTUPLET (8)
C2: POLITE (6)
DC: POULTICE (8)
Score: 74–7 (max 97)

Yet another great spot by Andy Platt and his black and white cat!

Round 10: 25, 10, 4, 1, 4, 5. Target: 651.

C1: 651. (4 × 4 + 10) × 25 + 1 (10)
C2: -
Score: 84–7 (max 107)

Dix pois to our champion.

Teatime teaser: SAINTAMY -> iMAINSTAYx

Round 11: N V D E O U R A P

C1: VAPOURED (8)
C2: VAPOURED (8)
DC: UNPROVED (8)
Score: 92–15 (max 115)

Eights all round

Round 12: T D O I X N R U S

C1: TURIONS (7)
C2: TOXINS (6)
DC: NITROUS (7)
Score: 99–15 (max 122)

Andy pulls further away again with TURIONS whilst DC match him with its anagram of NITROUS

Round 13: F W N S A E E B M

C1: SEAMEN (6)
C2: sawmen
OT: BASEMEN (7)
Score: 105–15 (max 129)

A tough-ish looking selection wields 6 and our-champ has got a century with 2 rounds to spare!

Round 14: 75, 1, 9, 10, 7, 9. Target: 218.

C1: 217. (10 − 7) × 75 − (9 − 1) (7)
C2: -
RR: 218. (7 + 9) × 9 + 75 − 1 (10)
Score: 112–15 (max 139)

Tough numbers game here which I think Rachel did brilliantly to solve. I didn't get 218 and thought at first I was being thick as I thought it looked easy.

Round 15: N I P P Y S L U G

C2 buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say SUPPLYING which is correct.
Final Score: 112–25 (max 149)

But its John who gets the last laugh with spotting that NIPPYSLUG turns into SUPPLYING.

Well played Andy and I hope you keep up the momentum throughout as a big aggregate is on the cards potentially. Bad luck to John too; I think he was unlucky to come up against a top apterite and I personally thought he was better than his score of 25 suggested.

Thanks James for letting me do a recap :D :) (thought I would throw in those emoticons just for you! To those of you that are coming to COREA next week, see you there!
