Wednesday 6th March 2013 (Series 68, Prelim 3)

Post by James Robinson »

So, after being exhausted from doing the Championship Final last week, it's back to normality from now on with the regular Series 68. But, we've already had 2 very good games from 2 of our Apterites so far. Let's hope it can carry on for a good while yet.

So, time to sit back and enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Wednesday 6 March 2013.

C1: Champion Philip Jarvis (1 win, 95 points.) An Apteforumite and staffing team officer in the fire service from Hunsworth, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. He also talks about a trip to the Grand Canyon when he went on a glass platform in the shape of a horseshoe that was made by some Native Americans.
C2: Challenger Anthony Josephson. An optometrist from Whitefield, Manchester. (You can probably tell because of the bright white frames on his glasses. 8-) ) He has an identical twin (as well as another brother) and he was even mistaken for his brother after receiving all the applause for his brother's drama performance in GCSE Drama. :P
DC: Susie Dent and Chris Packham.
RR: Rachel Riley, promoting World Maths Day, which it is today.
OT: Other words or solutions.

C1: GOITRED (7)
C2: DIETARY (7)
DC: GYRATED (7) TRAGEDY (7) GODETIA (7)
OT: TRIAGED (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Nice flat start to today's proceedings. :)

Round 2: T J A E L O E P M

C1: TEMPLE (6)
C2: PLATE (5)
DC: MAPLE (5)
OT: METOPE (6) OLEATE (6) PELMET (6) PELOTA (6) PELTAE (6)
Score: 13–7 (max 13)

Philip takes the first lead and makes some solid foundations with his TEMPLE. 8-)

A METOPE is any of the square spaces, either decorated or plain, between triglyphs in the Doric frieze.
An OLEATE is an ester or a salt of oleic acid.

Round 3: L R X D I U E W C

C1: CURDLE (6)
C2: ULCER (5)
DC: WILDER (6) CURLEW (6)
OT: CURLED (6)
Score: 19–7 (max 19)

Phil brings up a CURDLE in this one, while poor Anthony only has an ULCER for his troubles. :(

Round 4: A N R L I O D S N

C1: ANDISOL (7)
C2: DRAINS (6)
DC: ORDINALS (8) ANDIRONS (8)
Score: 26–7 (max 27)

A very nice Apto-7 from Philip, while DC get both available 8's in this one. 8-)

Round 5: 25, 7, 8, 6, 1, 9. Target: 287.

C1: 287. Mistake in working.
C2: -
RR: 287. (25 + 7 + 9) x (6 + 1) (10)
Score: 26–7 (max 37)

Oh dear, oh dear. Anthony completely blanks out, while Philip completely messes up his method, leaving our maths expert to shine on World Maths Day. 8-)

Chris talks about his tour that he's currently on at the moment where he shares his wildlife pictures, and we even get to see pictures of a red squirrel and a cheetah.

Teatime teaser: ROARPLUS -> PARLOURS

Round 6: G V E I T P E M A

C1: IMAGE (5)
C2: MEAT (4)
DC: MAGPIE (6)
OT: GAMETE (6) METAGE (6)
Score: 31–7 (max 43)

A nice IMAGE portrayed by Philip here, as Anthony is stuck with his MEAT (or is it MEET :?: :P )

METAGE is the official measurement of contents or weight.

Round 7: S T K F I O A S E

C1: OAKIEST (7)
C2: STEAKS (6)
DC: FIESTAS (7) FATSOS (6)
OT: KETOSIS (7) SOFTIES (7) SOSATIE (7)
Score: 38–7 (max 50)

Carrying on from the MEAT, Anthony gives us some STEAKS (or is it STAKES :?: :P ), but Philip offers us the OAKIEST wine to drink it down. :D

KETOSIS is the accumulation of excessive ketones in the body, as in diabetic acidosis.
In South Africa, a SOSATIE is a skewer of curried meat pieces.

Round 8: U M T P I S O E D

C1: DUMPIEST (8)
C2: DEPOSIT (7)
DC: STUMPED (7)
Score: 46–7 (max 58)

The DUMPIEST darren from Philip here. Anthony's not getting a look in here........

Round 9: L W S Q I A O B I

C1: ALIBIS (6)
C2: BAILS (5)
DC: BOILS (5)
OT: QIBLAS (6)
Score: 52–7 (max 64)

Another fine spot for Philip. Clearly on fire today. 8-) 8-)

A QIBLA is the point toward which Muslims turn to pray, especially the Kaʿba, or House of God, at Mecca.

Susie's Origins of Words carries on with the bird theme with the origins of "sparrow", "starling"

Round 10: 25, 9, 8, 10, 10, 7. Target: 880.

C1: -
C2: 880. ((9 x 7) + 25) x 10 (10)
Score: 52–17 (max 74)

WOW!!! A super impressive spot by Anthony there, which leaves Philip in knots. :P

Teatime teaser: NAILBOTH -> BIATHLON

Round 11: N T R R A U O E A

C1: NARRATE (7)
C2: tourner
DC: AERONAUT (8)
Score: 59–17 (max 82)

Anthony decides to take a gamble on a 7, but to no avail, meaning Philip is now in striking range of win #2. :D Impressive darrenic 8 from DC too.

Round 12: I N H O A D V E R

C1: INVADER (7)
C2: HAIRED (6)
DC: RHINO (5) HANDIER (7) HANDOVER (8)
OT: OVERHAND (8)
Score: 66–17 (max 90)

And that's a wrap for Philip, as the INVADER stays on for another day at least. :)

Round 13: F S M R U O I A G

C1: GOURAMIS (8)
C2: GRAMS (5)
Score: 74–17 (max 98)

WHAT A CRACKER!!!! Now that's a way to finish the letters rounds up. 8-) Truly fantastic from Philip there :!: 8-) 8-)

Round 14: 75, 7, 5, 2, 4, 7. Target: 493.

C1: 492. Mistake in working.
C2: 492. (7 x 75) - (5 x 7) + 2 (7)
RR: 493. ((75 - 4) x 7) - (7 - 5 + 2) (10)
Score: 74–24 (max 108)

Well, I'm sure Anthony wishes that this was just a numbers show, as he has beaten Philip 17-0 in the numbers rounds today.

Definitely some room for improvement there for our champion. :P

Round 15: C L I F I D E N T

C1 buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say INFLICTED which is correct.
Final Score: 84–24 (max 118)

But, that definitely doesn't need improving much :!:

So, a commanding performance from start to finish from Philip, but in fairness, he didn't have much competition from Anthony today.

I'll be back tomorrow for his 3rd challenge, where hopefully he'll have a bit more of a challenge to his crown. :D

So, till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D
