Round 1: R C Y H I E A S L

C1: SCALIER (7)
C2: SCARILY (7)
DC: CHARLIES (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

DC get the only eight as both players score.

Round 2: T P N E O I T D R

C1: PORTEND (7)
C2: POTTED (6)
DC: POINTED (7) TRIDENT (7) TIPTOED (7)
OT: DIOPTRE (7) DOTTIER (7) PERIDOT (7) POINTER (7) PORTENT (7) POTTIER (7) PRINTED (7) PROTEIN (7) REPOINT (7) TRITONE (7)
Score: 14–7 (max 15)

Flat as a pancake but Ian can't get any of them, allowing the champ to take an early lead.

Round 3: S L W V E U A S T

C1: STAVES (6)
C2: SLAVES (6)
DC: WASTES (6) SALUTES (7)
OT: AVULSES (7) SUAVEST (7) TALUSES (7) VESTALS (7)
Score: 20–13 (max 22)

A few sevens missed by the contestants.

Round 4: E I Q C S O E N P

C1: COPIES (6)
C2: PIECES (6)
DC: SPICE (5) PEONIES (7)
OT: SENECIO (7)
Score: 26–19 (max 29)

Round 5: 75, 50, 25, 100, 4, 9. Target: 559.

C1: 559. (50 + 4 - 75/25) x 9 + 100 (10)
C2: 559. 4 x 100 + 75 + 25 + 50 + 9 (10)
Score: 36–29 (max 39)

David calls on his secret weapon in a bid to widen the gap but the target is fairly obvious and the games remains close.

Teatime teaser: CURBHERO -> BROCHURE

Round 6: L B N A O E H S J

C1: BANJOES (7)
C2: NOBLES (6)
OT: BONSELA (7)
Score: 43–29 (max 46)

David spots one of the sevens to move further in front.

Round 7: X T D C S I A E U

C1: casted
C2: TAXIED (6)
DC: SIDECUT (7)
Score: 43–35 (max 53)

Oh dear, David falls into the very common trap of thinking casted is fine but the past tense is unfortunately cast. This is now the 11th time the word has been disallowed on the show, bringing it level with corgies and outlaid (thanks to Graeme's Stattopalooza for that info). If you ever see that, go for CADETS instead. Ian closes the gap to just eight points and DC find the only seven.

Round 8: D H T F O A E I N

C1: FAINTED (7)
C2: FAINTED (7)
DC: DEFIANT (7)
Score: 50–42 (max 60)

Simple.

Round 9: G R M A O A R N S

C1: MARGOSA (7)
C2: GROANS (6)
DC: OARSMAN (7)
OT: ANGORAS (7) GARRONS (7) MARRONS (7) SAMANGO (7) SANGOMA (7)
Score: 57–42 (max 67)

David redeems himself for the casted error by pulling a lovely seven out of the bag.

Round 10: 100, 25, 75, 50, 8, 7. Target: 275.

C1: 275. 7 x 25 + 100 (10)
C2: 275. 8 x 25 + 75 (10)
Score: 67–52 (max 77)

Ian's not afraid to have a go at four large himself and this time it's even easier than the last one, so the game remains, fairly tight.

Teatime teaser: CAGYCOOL -> CACOLOGY

Round 11: C T R G I E U W M

C1: GRIME (5)
C2: CRIME (5)
DC: METRIC (6)
OT: CERIUM (6) RECTUM (6) TERGUM (6)
Score: 72–57 (max 83)

Just fives for the contestants as David still has work to do before the end.

Round 12: K F D N I O A G M

C1: MIKADO (6)
C2: FOAMING (7)
DC: KINGDOM (7)
Score: 72–64 (max 90)

Is the pressure getting to the champ now? He misses what should have been a routine spot and Ian is within touching distance now.

Round 13: P N Z D U E A E A

C1: 5 X
C2: PANDA (5)
OT: NEAPED (6)
Score: 72–69 (max 96)

And now the gap's down to just three!!! David realises he's seen a second N so Ian's PANDA takes the spoils. David looks like having to face a crucial conundrum for the first time now, unless he can pull something off in the crucial last numbers game.

Round 14: 50, 75, 25, 100, 8, 10. Target: 717.

C1: 717. (100 - 10) x 8 - 75/25 (10)
C2: 720.
Score: 82–69 (max 106)

And he does! Ian again tried four large but can only manage three away and is out of the game now. David's method is simple but effective and he lets out a massive sigh of relief.

Round 15: C A M P Y C L O T

C1 buzzes on 3 seconds to say COMPACTLY which is correct.
Final Score: 92–69 (max 116)

And David finishes off by solving his fourth conundrum in six attempts. It was a bit of a nervy performance from him today, especially towards the end but he held his nerve and he will live to fight aother day. We should also give Ian some credit for keeping it fairly tight throughout, arguably the toughest game our champ has had so far. It looks inevitable that he will become the seventh octochamp of the series and it's probably more of a case of whether or not he will topple Paul James as number one seed. He will need to average just over 100 in has last two games in order to do so, as well as two wins of course. James will guide you through the rest of his run and I'll be back next week when two other players will occupy the seats. See you then.
