Countdown recap for Thursday 22 November 2012.

Hi, I'm not James Robinson. He is busy so I'm afraid you're stuck with me for today. :P A big thank you to Robbo for doing my usual recap slot on Tuesday so now I'm going to return the favour. ;)

C1: Champion David Barnard (2 wins, 181 points.) An apte-forumite, he is a charity shop worker from Ross-onWye. He is a talented golfer, aiming to get to a handicap of 1 one day. He's not bad at Countdown either, having had two very good wins so far, although Nick points out that he only got 87 yesterday after his debut score of 94. Can he improve today?
C2: Challenger Arthur Sharpe. A musician and private tutor from Clapham. He plays various instruments all round the country, notably in London. He also wrote the soundtrack for Black Pond, which was later up for a BAFTA nomination. He came to the UK from Japan at the age of seven and still visits family members there regularly.
DC: Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: R C M D E I A R O

C1: MARRIED (7)
C2: CARRIED (7)
DC: COMRADE (7) DORMICE (7)
OT: AIRDROME (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

No one's getting CARRIED away just yet as they all miss the darren, but both players get off the mark early at least.

Round 2: K S B I U A P L O

C1: POLKAS (6)
C2: BLIPS (5)
OT: PULASKI (7)
Score: 13–7 (max 15)

A difficult selection and David fares better with his offering of POLKAS to move into the lead. There was one very strange seven in there which again is missed by everyone.

Round 3: F H C N I E A P T

C1: HEPATIC (7)
C2: pantie
OT: APHETIC (7) PANTECH (7) PICANTE (7)
Score: 20–7 (max 22)

Another good spot by our champ to stretch his lead, as Arthur's six is only acceptable in the plural anyway.

Round 4: X G O E S W T A L

C1: TOWAGE (6)
C2: GLOATS (6)
DC: legwax LEGATOS (7)
OT: STOWAGE (7) TOWAGES (7)
Score: 26–13 (max 29)

David decides to play it safe and match Arthur's six. I assume he was thinking of TOWAGES which would have been fine and in fact he could have stuck the S on either end of his word for another winner.

Round 5: 25, 3, 9, 1, 8, 1. Target: 309.

C1: 309. (9 + 3) x 25 + 8 + 1 (10)
C2: 309. (9 + 3) x 25 + 8 + 1 (10)
Score: 36–23 (max 39)

When the numbers come out, it looks like it could be tricky but the target turns out to be nice and straightforward for both.

Gyles mentions a few misconcepts about famous lines in films, or something like that.

Teatime teaser: ISPURELY -> PLEURISY

Round 6: N S M E A I D F H

C1: MAIDENS (7)
C2: FAMISHED (8)
DC: FAMINES (7) MEDIANS (7)
Score: 36–31 (max 47)

Arthur closes the gap to five by expertly spotting the darren.

Round 7: T Y C T E O I S P

C1: TIPTOES (7)
C2: POTTIES (7)
OT: COPYIST (7) COTTISE (7) POETICS (7) SOCIETY (7) STYPTIC (7)
Score: 43–38 (max 54)

Plenty of sevens here.

Round 8: W G T E A O C S R

C1: ESCARGOT (8)
C2: COASTER (7)
Score: 51–38 (max 62)

Well that's a moment of apterous magic! David pulls a superb darrenic eight out of the bag to extend his lead. :D

Round 9: N T V T E O A M S

C1: TOMENTA (7)
C2: NOVATES (7)
OT: MOVANTS (7) NOTATES (7) STOMATE (7)
Score: 58–45 (max 69)

All those hours of playing apterous are certianly paying off for David, who produces another beauty. This time it's only enough to match Arthur though, who is not out of this game yet.

OoW: Susie talks about the origins of names of people types which you wouldn't want to become.

Round 10: 100, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3. Target: 650.

C1: 650. (100 + 8) x 6 + 3 - 1 (10)
C2: 650. (100 + 8) x 6 + 3 - 1 (10)
Score: 68–55 (max 79)

Again the numbers game fails to trouble either player.

Teatime teaser: ANTCHESS -> SNATCHES

Round 11: B S D M I E A T N

C1: BANDIEST (8)
C2: INMATES (7)
DC: basemint AMBIENT (7) BASINET (7)
OT: MEDIANTS (8)
Score: 76–55 (max 87)

Finally some breathing space for David as his eight leaves him on the brink of his hattrick. Gyles resorts to making up a word in this round.

Round 12: F L J E O U D N D

C1: FONDLED (7)
C2: FOUNDED (7)
DC: UNFOLDED (8)
Score: 83–62 (max 95)

DC get the darren and the contestants get some sevens. David just needs to draw the next round to confirm the win.

Round 13: O R U M A R D E N

C1: ARMOURED (8)
C2: UNMARRED (8)
DC: MURDER (6) UNARMED (7) UNDERARM (8)
Score: 91–70 (max 103)

And he does, as all three eights are accounted for, although Susie has to check Arthur's offering of UNMARRED. Can the champion cap his display with his first century?

Round 14: 2, 3, 7, 4, 3, 1. Target: 171.

C1: 171. (7 x 4 x 2 + 1) x 3 (10)
C2: -
Score: 101–70 (max 113)

Yes he can, despite his opponent going for six small. Now can he beat my high score by one, which I also achieved in my third game?

Round 15: T E A B R E A T H

C1 buzzes on 5 seconds to say HEARTBEAT which is correct.
Final Score: 111–70 (max 123)

Nothing's stopping David today! It was a tricky conundrum but he still managed it to register the joint second highest score of the series. Today was arguably his best display of his three victories so far against another decent opponent in Arthur, who was unlucky to see the final score looking like it did. I'll be back to Tuesday recaps from next week and my next recap will probably be David's sixth show. Join Thomas tomorrow to find out if he can become a half octochamp. Until next time, cheerio.
