Monday 19th November 2012 (Series 67, Prelim 74)

Post by James Robinson »

It's Monday and now it's time for a "Cole-powered" recap. Oh wait, hang on, James seems to be wanting to get in on the action today since he's busy later in the week.

So, Graeme has kindly given me the recap today, and you'll see him for his recap on Wednesday this week. :D

Countdown recap for Monday 19 November 2012.

C1: Champion Heather Styles (7 wins, 647 points.) An Apteforumite from Sevenoaks, Kent. She says that she refuses to believe that she will be an octochamp until she achieves it, so here's hoping. ;) :) :D
C2: Challenger Mike Winnerham. From Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. He previously worked in the menswear retail business, appropriately it's Calvin Klein's 70th birthday today. 8-) (P.S. The camera had no visual on Mike's nameplate, but the subtitles' suggestion of "Winnerer" is clearly wrong. On closer inspection, I think it's Winnerham, so I'm sticking with that, until we have better proof.)
DC: Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth, making his record-breaking 298th DC appearance today, on his 30th anniversary of his first trip to the show. 8-) :geek: :ugeek:
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: F P F G C E I O U

C1: POUFFE (6)
C2: poufe
DC: OFFICE (6)
Score: 6–0 (max 6)

Oh dear, a very unfortunate start for Mike, as he thinks that POUFFE has only one F...............

Round 2: N D E T L S I O P

C1: POINTED (7)
C2: POINTED (7)
DC: SPOILED (7) SPINDLE (7) DOPIEST (7) POSITED (7) DEPOSIT (7) SPLINTED (8)
Score: 13–7 (max 14)

Loadsa loadsa 7's here, but DC at the last second spot the darrenic 8. 8-)

Round 3: A E I E D V Q H B

C1: BEHAVED (7)
C2: BEHAVED (7)
DC: QI (2) BEHEAD (6)
Score: 20–14 (max 21)

Quite like the QI spot from Gyles, but our contestants BEHAVED well here to get top marks. :)

Round 4: R T W O R A I F P

C1: PARROT (6)
C2: PAIR (4)
DC: AIRPORT (7)
Score: 26–14 (max 28)

DC maybe flying high at the AIRPORT, but Heather's PARROT doubles her lead over Mike at this early stage.

Round 5: 75, 5, 2, 10, 3, 1. Target: 213.

C1: 213. (75 x 3) - (10 + 2) (10)
C2: 213. (75 x 3) - (10 + 2) (10)
Score: 36–24 (max 38)

Nice and easy. NEXT...........

Gyles talks about his new murder mysteries involving Oscar Wilde's time in Reading Gaol, but he mainly talks about proofreading texts of famous books. :P

Teatime teaser: EATACHIP -> HEPATICA

Round 6: C T R M E U A S O

C1: MASTER (6)
C2: COURTS (6)
DC: CAT (3) MOUSE (5) catmouse CURATES (7) MATURES (7)
OT: CUSTOMER (8) OUTRACES (8)
Score: 42–30 (max 46)

Fortunately for me, I knew that CASTOREUM (lovely as it is as a word) isn't in this dictionary, but I was well shocked that DC missed both 8's here!! :o

Round 7: X N K S E A I O T

C1: TOKENS (6)
C2: TAXIS (5)
DC: TEN (3) taxies
OT: ATONIES (7) INTAKES (7) KENTIAS (7) OAKIEST (7)
Score: 48–30 (max 53)

Another increase of 6 points in Heather's lead, but yet again plenty of treasure lying untouched, and also Susie makes the mistake of saying that taxies is allowed............

An ATONY is lack of tone or energy; muscular weakness, especially in a contractile organ.

Round 8: R D A S D I E O J

C1: SORDID (6)
C2: RAIDED (6)
DC: ROADSIDE (8)
Score: 54–36 (max 61)

Gyles goes to the ROADSIDE to pick up his darrenic 8, but Heather still looks comfortable, if slightly SORDID. :P

Round 9: R E B A S I Z O L

C1: SIZABLE (7)
C2: BLAZERS (7)
DC: BEZOARS (7)
OT: SOLARIZE (8)
Score: 61–43 (max 69)

Yet again, plenty of 7's around, but yet again, the 8 isn't spotted by DC.......

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "luxury".

Round 10: 75, 25, 9, 3, 8, 5. Target: 955.

C1: 956. ((5 + 8) x 75) - (25 - (9 - 3)) (7)
C2: 997.
RR: 955. ((25 x 8) - 9) x 5 (10)
Score: 68–43 (max 79)

While Mike is miles away, Heather gets to within one, as Rach shows us how to do it. I actually had a similar method, which was a bit long winded (change the 25 x 8 for the 200 to ((75 x 3) - 25).)

Those 7 points also mean that Heather will become the #2 seed after this match, as long as she wins. 8-)

Teatime teaser: LOUDMOSH -> HOODLUMS

Round 11: S T N M A I E A O

C1: AMNIOTES (8)
C2: MOISTEN (7)
DC: ANIMATES (8)
OT: ANATOMIES (18) ANATOMISE (18)
Score: 76–43 (max 97)

A classic Countdowner's spot from Heather, although even I'm amazed that I missed those two 9's there!!!!

Round 12: R M C U I S P E A

C1: CAMPERS (7)
C2: CAMPERS (7)
DC: AUSPICE (7)
OT: APERCUS (7) CAESIUM (7) CAMPIER (7) MURICES (7) PUMICES (7) SAUCIER (7) SCAMPER (7) SCAUPER (7) SCRAPIE (7) SPACIER (7) UMPIRES (7) UPRAISE (7) URAEMIC (7)
Score: 83–50 (max 104)

It must now be 7 o'clock with all these offerings here. :P

An APERÇU is a hasty glance or a glimpse.
A MUREX (plural MURICES) is any marine gastropod of the genus Murex, common in tropical seas, certain species of which yield the royal purple dye valued by the ancients.
A SCRAPIE is an infectious, usually fatal brain disease of sheep, characterized by twitching of the neck and head, grinding of the teeth, and scraping of itching portions of skin against fixed objects with a subsequent loss of wool: caused by an unidentified sticky agent that clings to cell membranes.

Round 13: T V G N U E A I N

C1: VINTAGE (7)
C2: VENTING (7)
DC: VAUNTING (8)
Score: 90–57 (max 112)

Game, set and match, Styles. A VINTAGE performance indeed, even if DC were VAUNTING in this one. :P Now, can she get the ton that her performance deserves :?: :?: :?:

Round 14: 75, 50, 3, 7, 8, 6. Target: 926.

C1: -
C2: -
RR: 926. ((75 + 50 - (7 + 3)) x 8) + 6 (10)
Score: 90–57 (max 122)

Oh dear, well not in this one. In fact, all but Rachel is immune from solving this one. :ugeek:

Round 15: R A K E D N E C K

No one buzzes. The answer was KNACKERED.
Final Score: 90–57 (max 132)

And after that numbers, clearly both the contestants were too KNACKERED to solve this conundrum, but there was one bloke in the audience who got it, and wouldn't you know it, it was our very own Phil Jarvis!!! ;) :) :D  8-)

But, back to our newly crowned octochamp, Heather has been an absolute joy to see on screen, and it's brilliant that she will be returning for the finals, which start in just over 3 weeks time. Currently, she's the #2 seed, but there is just enough time to get 2 more in to make it a full house.

Especially as one of tomorrow's challengers is another member of our fraternity, David Barnard. :o 8-)

Join me tomorrow to see how he will start off his Countdown journey.

So till then, bye bye all. ;) :) :D  8-)

"Susie makes the mistake of saying that taxies is allowed"

Isn't it? "The aircraft taxies to the terminal"?

No, the verb is TAXIS in the ODE3.

Nice recap, James. Well done, Phil, for getting the conundrum; I got as far as CAKE and then gave up! In ODE3, under "taxi" (verb), "taxis" is given in bold type but "taxies" is used in the example: "the plane taxies up to a waiting limousine". I see that this quirk has been discussed before on the forum.

Somewhat belatedly (cos I'm a bit behind on watching) I can confirm that it's the wonderfully unusual "Whinnerah". Had to resort to some googling and 192.com. All the shots on-screen that I caught were from too far away to be unpixellated.

Ah, at last. I had the same problem, as you can see, so I'm quite happy that I was only 1 letter off.......... :P 8-)
